Gossip Girl-A summer in Paris (My thoughts on episode 4.01 Belles de Jour)

Since I haven’t seen very many episodes from season four and I now have iTunes season pass for it, I’m going back and watching all of the season 4 episodes that I missed, I figured that I’d blog about my thoughts on the episode.

Season 4 picks up towards the very end of the summer. Blair and Serena have spent the whole summer in Paris like they had planned in the season 3 finale. Serena has spent the whole summer chasing after a bunch of different guys, and that’s pretty much all she did in this episode. Honestly, what else is new with Serena? That’s pretty much all she’s done since season 2. Can’t the writers think of anything else with Serena? At this point, I think the writers should just write Serena off the show. The show could definitely survive without her.

We learned that Blair had spent the summer constantly checking Gossip Girl for news about Chuck who was M.I.A. and no one knew where he was despite the fact that Lily was trying to track him down. It’s so obvious that Blair is still into Chuck at this point in the season, despite what she might say. Blair met a guy that she thought was a French prince, or so she thought, and Serena met yet another guy, who turned out to be an actual French prince, while Blair’s new guy turned out to be the French prince’s chauffer, which infuriated Blair, especially after she found out that Serena got accepted into Columbia University, because she had just found out that she was accepted there too, so she was able to transfer there from NYU. Serena told Blair that she wasn’t going to not go to Columbia just because Blair didn’t want her to, especially since her dad went to college there. I absolutely loved it when Blair shoved Serena into the fountain, because hate Serena. Serena definitely deserved it.

In the end Blair’s guy turned out to be an actual prince after all, he just tricked since he knew that Blair was more interested in his royal title than she was actually interested in him. After he told her the truth, he promptly rejected her.

Blair and Serena talked, and Serena told her that it was okay with her if they both go to Columbia University, which they both agreed would be fun. Honestly, why does everyone act like the world revolves around Serena and what she wants? Why should Blair be required to have Serena’s approval of where she can and can’t go to college? It’s a free country. Blair can go to college wherever she wants. For the love of god, Serena, get over yourself already! Grrr…

Like Serena, Nate spent the whole summer acting like a total whore, fooling around with all of the women in Chuck’s little black book of women that he gave Nate in the season 3 finale. Honestly, what’s new with Nate? The writers are basically doing the same thing with Nate that they are doing with Serena. He ended up meeting a mysterious woman named Juliet who he immediately began flirting with. At the end of the episode, they show a board with picture of all of the characters and a map. It’s obvious that she’s out for revenge against Serena. Based on some of the season 4 episodes that I have seen, I know a little bit about Juliet’s mysterious plan, but I still don’t know very much about it. I’m looking forward to having the parts of this story that I missed explained.

Dan spent the whole summer at Rufus’ old loft, basically acting like a hoarder, because he didn’t want anyone to know that Georgina Sparks had a baby named Milo that he believes is his. It’s obvious that Milo isn’t Dan’s baby; especially based on the season 4 episodes I have seen. Georgina was also shown making a mysterious phone call about Milo’s birth certificate. Vanessa learned that Dan had spent the summer with Georgina taking care of Milo after she visited the loft and saw Georgina with Milo. They took a walk and Vanessa was surprised by how much Dan had learned about pregnancy and taking care of babies.

Vanessa told Rufus and Lily about baby Milo and given Georgina’s reputation they insisted on doing a paternity test since Dan hadn’t done one yet. That surprised me, if I was Dan I would have done one the second Milo was born. The paternity test they ran showed that Dan was Milo’s father, but it’s obvious that Georgina faked the DNA test results somehow. After hearing the DNA test results, Dan finally signed the birth certificate. He also bonded with Rufus and Lily and said that he was glad that they knew about baby Milo. It’s only a matter of time before they all find out that Georgina switched the DNA test results. I already know that.

Toward the very end of the episode Lily got a call from someone saying that they found a dead body that medical records supposedly confirmed was Chuck. Of course Chuck isn’t really dead, he’s simply hiding out in Prague after having been shot in the season 3 finale. A French woman named Eva has been taking care of him. At the end of the episode Chuck and Eva go to Paris.

All in all, I thought that this was a pretty good episode, but the Serena and Nate storylines pretty much annoyed the hell out of me, because with the exception of Juliet’s mysterious plan, their storylines were pretty much like every other storyline that Serena and Nate have had on the show at this point. That being said, I give the episode a rating of a B-.
