Gossip Girl: Family drama with a side of Thanksgiving (My thoughts on episode 4.10: Gaslit)

I have to say that I loved this episode. Once again this episode focused a lot on Serena, which always annoys me when the writers do that, but it was still a really good episode. Anyway, onto my thoughts on the episode. This episode picked the day after the previous episode ended, which was Thanksgiving. Serena was missing, and pretty much everyone was too upset with her recent supposed behavior, not knowing that it was all Juliet’s doing to care where she was. Serena woke up in the cheap motel that Juliet took her dazed and confused about where she was or how she got there surrounded by bottles of different kinds of pills. Her family finally figures out where she is once she’s taken to the hospital. Given Serena’s past reputation for being a party girl everyone, but Dan refused to believe Serena when she adamantly insisted that the drug overdose wasn’t her fault. Even Blair didn’t believe Serena at first when she claimed that the whole thing was Juliet’s doing. Meanwhile, Juliet was acting like she had no idea how Serena ended up overdosing. However, Vanessa and Jenny began to feel extremely guilty about what they had done and wanted confess to everyone, but Juliet tried to stop them. In the end, Vanessa ended up being the one who admitted to everything. Once everyone found out about Vanessa and Jenny’s part in Juliet’s scheme, Rufus was of course furious with Jenny. I know Jenny’s behavior was extremely reprehensible, but I have loved everything the writers did with making Jenny a major schemer and a part of Juliet’s plan for revenge against Serena this season. Usually, Jenny has always kind of annoyed me in the past.

Honestly, I don’t blame Lily and Blair for refusing to believe that Serena didn’t take those drugs of her free will and thinking that they should have her committed to the Ofstroff Center, which is also where Eric went after his suicide attempt. Serena should know by now that she’ll never be able to escape her past as a party girl, especially given some of the messes she’s gotten herself into in terms of her love life. Dan ended up helping Serena break out of the Ofstroff center and they were planning to get out of town until Serena’s drug overdose was reported on the news, which made Serena decide to go back to the center. Serena also told Dan that she was planning to tell him that she had chosen to be with him at the ball. Honestly, I don’t care about Serena’s love life and the problems that she has in terms of her love life anymore. She really brings it on herself, if you ask me.

I have to say that I applaud Dan for telling Lily that while she is Serena’s mother, he’s spent more time with her than she has and in some ways knows her better than she does in some ways. I have to say that I think that’s very true in many ways.

Juliet told Ben that she had drugged Serena, which upset him because that had never been a part of their plan, but she told him that she felt like she had to improvise and make it a part of their plan for revenge. Once Lily realized that Juliet had been responsible for Serena’s drug overdose, she gave Juliet another check and told her that she would continue to send her a check each month in exchange for her agreeing to leave Serena alone. I have to say that while I’m glad that Juliet will be taken care of financially, I hate that Lily is once again forced to clean up another one of Serena’s messes. If you ask me, Lily should cut Serena off financially because Serena really is way too much trouble to deal with.

Throughout the episode, Blair mentioned that she was planning to go spend time with her dad and his boyfriend, but when Juliet ended up fleeing town after Lily paid her off, she asked Dan for his help with tracking down Juliet to get justice for Serena. I’ve always loved scenes between Dan and Blair, so them teaming up really excites me, especially since I know what happens between them toward the end of the season. Vanessa also decided to go spend time with her family. In retrospect, I really feel like the producers made the right decision to not bring Jessica Szohr back as a series regular for season five. Vanessa has become too much of an outsider on the show. It seems like she just periodically pops in to cause trouble for everyone then leaves for a while. It’s obvious the writers have run out of ideas for things to do with Vanessa.

One thing that really liked is the fact that Nate’s storyline revolved around drama with his family. He was upset after he found that his mom was planning to file for divorce because she doesn’t believe that Nate’s dad has truly changed like Nate has told her and is still in prison and she doesn’t want to deal with the problems that he has caused over the years anymore. Nate talked to Dan about his mom wanting to get a divorce, and Dan told him that his parents getting divorced might not necessarily be a bad thing because he knows that his own parents are happier now that they are divorced than they were when they were married.

I’m really that the writers once again showcased Dan and Nate’s friendship in this episode. I enjoy their friendship, and sometimes it’s hard to believe that they didn’t get a long at all when the show started. In the end, Anne decided to listen to Nate and give Nate’s dad a chance before she goes through with filing for divorce. She also told Nate that he’s done a good job holding the family together while his dad has been in prison. I really do believe that Nate storylines that revolve around his family rather than his love life are more interesting than the storylines about Nate’s love life. I just think the storylines that revolve around Nate’s family drama also have more depth than the ones that focus on his love life.

Chuck and Blair spent the episode being very civil with one another, but that still doesn’t make me want them to get back together like I used to.

In the end Serena and her family ended up having what has become their traditional Thanksgiving dinner ever since the Thanksgiving episode in the first season, which involved eating food from a burger joint. Although, this time they brought the food to the Ofstroff center since Serena was still staying there.

All in all, I absolutely loved this episode for the most part because Dan and Blair had a lot of interaction with each other in this episode; and the episode showcased Dan and Nate’s friendship once again as Nate dealt with his family drama. I also like that Juliet was heavily featured in this episode. I really wish that the producers had made Katie Cassidy a series regular since Juliet is such an interesting character and Katie plays the role very well.

All that being said, I give this episode a rating of a B.
