Gossip Girl: Serena, Serena, Serena! Ugh! (My thoughts on episode 4.09: The Witches of Bushwick)

This episode really frustrated the hell out of me, because it was centered pretty much all around Serena. Despite the fact that Colin had cut Juliet off financially, she continued to carry out her plan for revenge against Serena, but now she has both Jenny and Vanessa helping her. They did all kinds of things to make Serena look bad. One of the main things they did was make it so that all of the text messages that people sent to Serena were sent to a phone that had been installed with an old data card from Serena’s phone so they could send replies to them that would turn people against her. They also used their text messages to turn Dan and Nate against Serena. I still love the whole storyline with Juliet since she’s one person who doesn’t like Serena.

Juliet sent information about Serena’s relationship with Colin to a gossip column, so Lily arranged a meeting with her and agreed to give her a large sum of money in exchange for her agreeing end her vendetta against Serena. I loved it when Juliet later taunted Serena about the fact that Lily had paid her off and acted like she wasn’t sure what Lily’s last name is since she’s been married so many times. That was hilarious. :)

One thing I loved about this episode was the scenes between Dan and Nate, because I love their friendship. They were still on the outs at the beginning of the episode, but Vanessa got them together so they could work things out since she knew that they liked being friends with each other. I’m pretty sure that Vanessa playing peacemaker wasn’t entirely driven by the fact that she knew they missed their friendship, but rather to try and cause problems for Serena by manipulating Dan and Nate. Dan and Nate spent the episode talking to each other about what they would do try and get Serena to decide which one she wanted to be with. That really annoyed me.

I have to say that I didn’t feel sorry at all when the dean of Columbia told her that she wanted Serena to withdraw from Columbia. She should have known that nothing good would happen if the school found out about their relationship with Colin. As much as Serena’s storyline annoyed me, I did love Serena’s reference to Big Love since I absolutely love that show. I also didn’t feel sorry for her when Dan and Nate told her that she had until the saints and sinners masquerade ball to decide who she wants to be with.

Anne Archibald asked Blair to be involved with a charity foundation for women that she had just started, but she told Blair that wouldn’t be able to be in a relationship with Chuck if she became involved with their organization. Meanwhile, Chuck was basically told the same thing about Blair by the board members of Bass Industries. They wanted him to be the bad boy and womanizer that people viewed him as in the past. They told people that things were over between them, but despite these warnings, Chuck and Blair continued their secret love affair. When Blair and Chuck were on the verge of having sex, Chuck told Blair that he loved her, but she acted like she didn’t hear him. I have to say that I think Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick have amazing chemistry together, but I’m still over the idea of them being a couple, especially since I know what happens between them toward the end of the season.

Toward the end of the episode Juliet and Jenny went to the ball and wearing masks they led everyone to believe that they were Serena. Juliet kissed Nate and made him believe that Serena had chosen to be with him. Juliet then did the same thing to Dan, which made him believe that she had chosen him.

In the end, Blair and Chuck’s affair was exposed when they were caught making out behind stage when Juliet raised the curtains and had a spotlight shine on them. Although, they both believed that Serena had exposed them. Before they started making out Blair told Chuck that she loved him too, and it seemed like they were going to get back together. However, Blair lost her position on the board for Anne’s foundation because everyone found out about their affair, and Blair blamed Serena for it even though she’s actually not the one who exposed their relationship. The board of Bass Industries ended up being happy about Blair and Chuck’s relationship, because it showed that Chuck has a soft side. Chuck of course was happy about this, but Blair was devastated about losing her spot on the board of Anne’s charity foundation and told him that they couldn’t be together. Chuck told her that he would give her money to start her own foundation, but she told him that she needed to be on her own for a while before they could ever be together. After having seen all of season four, I don’t care if they end up together or not. In fact, I don’t want them to end up with each other. Their relationship isn’t healthy at all.

Gossip Girl ended up posting pictures of Juliet kissing Dan and Nate, which ultimately led to both Dan and Nate rejecting Serena. They decided to go back to Dan’s loft and play video games, and they both promised not to even mention Serena’s name. I really do love Dan and Nate’s friendship, and I hope that the writers continue to showcase their friendship.

Toward the very end of the episode Juliet drugged Serena and came across Serena who was on the verge of passing out after taking drugs and got into a cab with her, telling the cab driver that she was Serena’s friend. Juliet took Serena to a motel in Queens, and once Serena had completely passed out, she sent a text message to the dean of Columbia pretending to be Serena saying that she had agreed to drop out of Columbia. Lily got a call from Columbia about Serena supposedly dropping out of Columbia she was of course furious with Serena.

In terms of how I feel about this episode as a whole, I really liked all of the stuff with Chuck and Blair. I also loved the scenes between Dan and Nate, because I love their friendship. I just wish they hadn’t spent the whole episode talking about Serena. Of course, the main highlight of the episode for me was Juliet continuing to carry out her vendetta against Serena with Jenny and Vanessa’s help. The fact that this episode revolved almost entirely around Serena made this episode a major drag for me. All that being said, I give this episode a rating of a D.
