According to Entertainment Weekly's Dan Snierson, Margo Martindale will be guest-starring in an upcoming episode of New Girl as Nick's mom. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Martindale's role:
You recently had a brief chance to hang out with Nick’s dad (Dennis Farina) before he slipped out the door. Now you’re about to meet a few more members of the Miller family, including his mother, who will be played by Margo Martindale of Justified fame, EW has learned.
In the episode, which will air on Fox in March, the gang travels to Chicago, where Nick (Jake Johnson) was raised. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) & co. are surprised to discover that Nick is actually the most responsible and mature member of his family. His hard-nosed, emotional mother is skeptical of her son’s relationship with Jess, and, well, of Jess in general.

My thoughts: I definitely have very mixed feelings about this casting news. On the one hand, I'm really excited to see what Nick's mom and other members of his family are like. I'm especially excited about the writers introducing more members of Nick's family since the article says that Nick is actually the most responsible and mature member of his family. The writers have always made it very clear that Nick is very irresponsible and immature, so the idea of Nick being the most mature and responsible member of his family will no doubt lead to some great comedic material. Just saying that Nick is very responsible and mature compared to the rest of his family automatically makes me think that the rest of his family must be dysfunctional beyond words.
On the other, I didn't like Margo Martindale at all on Justified, and I wasn't crazy about her in the episode of Suits that she guest-starred in either. Maybe it was just the characters that she played on Justified and Suits, but she just doesn't come across as a very charismatic actress that I want to see on TV a lot. I'll try to keep an open mind about this casting news though. For now, the most exciting thing about this news for me is that the writers will be introducing other members of Nick's family.
