NBC Orders Chicago Fire Spin-Off to Series-TVLine

Chicago PD - Pilot

According to TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, NBC has ordered the Chicago Fire spin-off Chicago PD to series. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on the spin-off.

The cast includes ChiFi‘s Jason Beghe (pictured) and Jon Seda (reprising their roles as Sergeant Hank Voight and Detective Antonio Dawson), Clint Eastwood’s actor-son Scott (Texas Chainsaw 3D) and Lost alum Tania Raymonde.

The official logline for the offshoot reads: “District 21 of the Chicago Police Department is made up of two distinctly different groups. There are the uniformed cops who patrol the beat and go head to head with the city’s street crimes. And there’s the Intelligence Unit” — led by Voight — “that combats the city’s major offenses – organized crime, drug trafficking, high profile murders and beyond.”

My thoughts: I'm not going to lie and say that I don't have my doubts about NBC making a spin-off of Chicago Fire at this point in time, because I definitely do have some reservations about this decision. On the one hand, I absolutely love Chicago Fire, and it has become one of my favorite new shows that I'm incredibly addicted to watching now. Plus, I'm pretty excited about the fact that Jason Beghe will be a part of the cast for the spin-off, because he has done a pretty good job on Chicago Fire. Although, it will be interesting to see how the writers will handle having Sergeant Hank Voight be one of the main characters on the spin-off since he's a dirty cop on Chicago Fire. I guess the writers will have to redeem the character in some way.

On the other hand, Chicago Fire is only in its first season and the show isn't exactly a major ratings hit, so I definitely think that NBC was a bit premature in deciding to make a spin-off of the show at this point in time. Although, NBC hasn't been in the best shape in terms of the network's ratings for the past several years, so I can't entirely blame the NBC network executives for wanting to capitalize on the success that Chicago Fire has had by doing a spin-off of the show at this point in time. Honestly, I wasn't sure that Chicago Fire was even going to get picked up for a full season when I saw the ratings for the series premiere. I'm glad that NBC gave Chicago Fire the chance to build an audience though, especially since I've ended up loving the show so much, and it's obvious that it paid off for them considering the fact that the show manged to top its series premiere ratings eight times this season. Chicago Fire has definitely become one of my favorite new shows this year, so I'll definitely be watching the spin-off. Hopefully, Chicago PD will get decent ratings for NBC and the network executives will be happy with how the show turns out.
