90210: Naomi and Teddy’s downward spirals continue and Adrianna gets busted (My thoughts on episode 3.03: 2012 Vision)

Let me just start off by saying that I absolutely loved this episode. It had so many good parts, and things that I liked about it. Since I’ve I also been watching a lot of episodes of Gossip Girl lately, I have to say that while I love that show and I absolutely loved season four of Gossip Girl, if they were both on the verge of being cancelled and I could only choose one of the two shows to be renewed, I would definitely choose 90210 over Gossip Girl every time. I know that both shows have a lot of flaws in both the writing and some of the actors in the cast of the two shows, but I personally think that 90210 is the least flawed of the two shows.

For starters, I love the fact that none of the characters on 90210 have had all of their storylines revolve around their love life or their sex life like the writers of Gossip Girl have done with the character Serena, and sometimes Nate. Plus, the kids on 90210 actually act their age, and the writers show the kids’ lives in school, and I personally feel like this episode really showcased that aspect of show with a lot of the storylines in this episode.

Also, I like that the characters on 90210 deal with a lot of issues that are happening in real life, such as drug addiction with Adrianna, people dealing with bipolar disorder like they have with the character Silver, and gay teens coming out of the closet by having Teddy come out of the closet this season. Gossip Girl on the other hand seems like a complete and total fantasy world showing college age kids live the kind of life that most kids in the world today aren’t living. Gossip Girl hasn’t ever really tackled any of the real life issues that 90210 has dealt with over the years. Gossip Girl is merely a form of entertainment and escapism for me. It’s really hard to take Gossip Girl very seriously, but I still love the show.

One of my favorite moments from this episode was the part where they are showing all of the kids filming their interview testimonies and answering the question where they want to be in ten years for a video that will be played at their ten year high school reunion. I love how the editors of the show mashed each of the characters responses to the question together so some of them sounded funny, but still made sense.

My particular favorite moments from that whole sequence were Liam’s parts of the video where he said that he didn’t even know where he would be ten days from now. That was very typical of Liam, if you ask me. Plus, I love how he thinks that Teddy is going to be really fat in ten years, and then laughed at the thought. I thought that was hilarious.

One of the only complaints that I have about this episode is the fact that Liam was only in a few scenes. Although, people say that less is more and 90210 does have a big cast, so they can’t always have every series regular in an episode or give every character in the episode a storyline. With that in mind, I can understand why Liam wasn’t in this episode very much.

In regards to the video testimonies that each of the characters gave, it’s definitely going to be awkward for Teddy if he goes to their high school reunion with a boyfriend and they play his part of the video since he used his testimony to apologize to Silver for all of his recent behavior. I really hope for Teddy’s sake they edit his testimony out of the video, or that he shot another testimony after that, and we simply didn’t see it.

Teddy was another character that I wish had been in the episode more, but I guess what I said about Liam’s lack of screen time also applies to Teddy. Plus, his overall storyline for the season isn’t something that you can rush since coming out of the closet in real life is something that can take years, but they do have to speed up the coming out process when they are doing a coming out storyline on TV show. I do like what they did do with Teddy’s coming out storyline in this episode. I thought it was really cool how they showed Teddy waking up with a hangover and seeing the note from Ian, but not have the note be signed so the viewers wouldn’t know that he hooked up with a guy until the end of the episode when Teddy ran into Ian in the hallway at school, and he told Teddy that he wouldn’t tell anyone that they had hooked up.

I have to say that I love how the writers introduced the character Ian in this episode. His part of the video testimony was pretty funny, and I thought Ian’s little run-in with Teddy in the lunchroom was handled very well.

Another one of my favorite storylines in the episode was Annie’s and how Annie was confused by her boss’ behavior. I loved the scene with Annie and the other girls on the show when she initially thought that Catherine had a crush on her. It was nice to see the writers mention Adrianna’s blink and you miss it relationship that she had with Gia in the previous season. The scene where Annie is trying to make it clear to her boss that she’s not into women and that she has a boyfriend was awkwardly hilarious.

As a Days Of Our Lives fan, I thought it was really fun to see Matthew Ashford guest star in this episode as Catherine’s husband. I thought it was funny how they had Annie go from thinking that Catherine had a crush on her to thinking that Catherine and her husband were swingers after she met Catherine’s husband. In the end, it turned out that Catherine and her husband were interested in buying some of Annie’s eggs, because they’ve been trying to conceive a child of their own for several years, but the fertility specialist that they had been seeing had recently told them that they needed to move on and try other methods to have a child.

I have to say that I’m a little baffled by the fact that they were interested in asking Annie of all people if she would be willing to donate some of her eggs for them to use to have a child. After all, Annie is pretty young. I would think that they would want to find an egg donor who was just little bit older and who had at least graduated from high school. After seeing this episode, the scene in the season premiere where they showed Catherine making a very cryptic phone call and was telling the person on the other end of the phone that she thought she had found someone who, “just might be desperate enough to do it.”, makes a lot more sense to me. I’m assuming that she was supposed to be talking to her husband about Annie being a potential egg donor when the writers wrote that scene in the season premiere.

Naomi began to have trouble sleeping in this episode, because every time she tried to sleep she had flashbacks of Mr. Cannon raping her. AnnaLynne McCord continues to impress me with her acting in this episode and the Naomi rape storyline as a whole. I like how the writers set up Silver coming to the realization that Naomi wasn’t lying this time when she said Mr. Cannon had really raped her by first showing a flashback of Naomi watching Mr. Cannon’s documentary with him the night he raped her in the season two finale, then had her quote a line from it in her video testimony for their high school reunion, and later toward the end of the episode Silver finally realizes that Naomi was telling the truth this time while she was watching Mr. Cannon’s documentary and saw the part that Naomi had quoted after Mr. Cannon had told her that she was the first person to see his documentary. That was a brilliant set up to that whole realization, if you ask me.

That brings me to my next thought regarding this episode. What on earth was Mr. Cannon thinking inviting Silver to his house to watch his documentary? If you ask me, it’s extremely in appropriate in most cases for a teacher to invite one of their students to come over to their house by themself. Clearly Mr. Cannon is mentally unstable, especially considering the fact that he tried to drug Silver by slipping pills into her tea. Thankfully, Silver figured out the truth about Mr. Cannon and got out of his house before she drank any of her tea.

Once again, I loved Oscar in this episode. I loved his video testimony, and the way that he manipulated Dixon into letting his guard down when they were wrestling each other in gym class by telling him that Ivy is a virgin. It was very sneaky and underhanded, but I loved it. My biggest gripe about this episode was Dixon’s reaction to finding out that Ivy is a virgin and how mad he got about the whole thing. That seemed really unfair to Ivy, especially considering the fact that Dixon had done body shots off another girl in a bar and the whole thing ended up being recorded on video and posted on the Internet in the previous episode. In the end, Ivy apologized to him by driving him to her dad’s house and told him that her dad lives only a few miles away from her, and yet he wants nothing to do with her or her mother. She also told Dixon that it’s really hard for her to open up to people sometimes because her own father rejected her. I have to say that I really like the character development that the writers did with Ivy in this episode.

Lastly, Adrianna landed herself in hot water after she sang one of Javier’s songs at his funeral. It turns out that Javier had recorded the song with his uncle, and so his uncle immediately knew that Adrianna was lying when she said that she had written the song. A video of Adrianna singing at Javier’s funeral was posted online, and it quickly went viral. Not knowing that Adrianna was lying about the song being hers’, Laurel was thrilled about this because the record label she worked for quickly booked studio time for Adrianna. Adrianna continued to lie when she was asked to appear on Entertainment Tonight. Javier’s uncle confronted her about the fact that she’s passing the song off as her own, and he threatened to post the recording of Javier singing the song on YouTube. I have to say that Adrianna was pretty stupid to think that she could get away with passing off Javier’s song as her own. She really should have known doing that wouldn’t end well for her when she did that.

If you ask me, this episode had a great ending. Having Silver walk into Naomi’s bedroom and finding her passed out after she had overdosed on sleeping pills when came to tell Naomi that she realized that Naomi was right about Mr. Cannon was a great way to end the episode.

All in all, I have to say that I absolutely loved this episode for the most part. Although, there is a part of me that wishes the writers could have shown how Teddy ended up hooking up with Ian. Perhaps they could have shown a flashback of them hooking up after their encounter in the hallway at the end of the episode. It was still a great episode though. That being said, I give this episode a rating of an A-.
