It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia: The Gang is back! Hurray! (My thoughts on episode 7x01: Frank’s Pretty Woman)

Let me start off by apologizing for not having this thoughts post done sooner. I’m currently in the middle of my last semester of college, so that’s my first priority until I graduated in December, but I’m definitely going to try and get my thoughts posts for the shows that I’m currently blogging about posted more promptly. Anyway, here are my thoughts on the season seven premiere.

All in all, I have to say that I absolutely loved this episode for the most part, and I thought that this episode was a great way to start off the season. I found the cold open where they are trying to adopt a dog from the animal shelter that they plan to train to attack the customers who come to the bar only to have the person from the animal shelter hang up on them absolutely hilarious. I can’t believe that the gang remained oblivious to the fact that the person from the animal shelter obviously heard them talking about wanting to train the dog to attack people. Dee, Denis and Charlie’s reactions to Frank coming into the bar with Roxy and announcing that he’s planning to propose to her was also absolutely hilarious.

Pretty Woman has been one of my favorite movies ever since I was five, and I’m twenty-three now, so I love how this episode was basically a spoof of the movie. The scene where Dee is shopping for new clothes with Roxy and they got the salesman in trouble with his supervisor for assuming that they didn’t have the money to pay for the clothes when Roxy did was absolutely priceless.

I love that Dee rather randomly decided to become a “foot girl” like Roxy after the fake Tiger Woods comes to her apartment to meet Roxy and she learns that Roxy doesn’t actually have sex with the men that she hooks up with. They are simply paying her to let them massage and play with her feet. Based on how they explained things, it sounds like Frank is the only guy who actually has sex with her. Dee suddenly deciding to become a “foot girl” reminded me a lot of how she randomly declared herself her old high school’s new drama teacher last season, which I also thought was hilarious. The scene where she shows up at Frank and Charlie’s apartment talking to Mac and Dennis like Roxy talked to them had me practically dying of laughter.

I have to say that I found the whole thing about gang talking about getting ready for their “second act” in life was also pretty funny. I both loved and hated how Mac and Dennis told Dee that she was already in her second act and that her life wasn’t going to get any better than it is right now. I loved it because the guys all constantly being mean to Dee and constantly ignoring her is one of my favorite running gags on the show, but I also hated it because Dee is one of my top favorite characters on the show right now with Charlie, so a part of me feels sorry for her at the same time when they are mean to her.

One of the main highlights of the episode for me was definitely when Charlie goes on a date with a girl while he’s pretending to be his casual Texas millionaire alter-ego, Hoss Bonaventure, who made his fortune in the “bridge business” and by also making a lot of money from his “boiled denim” business venture while Frank was pretending to be Charlie/Hoss’ limo driver in an attempt to convince Frank that he can do better than marry Roxy. I wasn’t expecting Charlie to vomit all of that fake blood all over his date at all. I practically died of laughter when he said that he thought he was coming down with a case of consumption. I’m still trying to figure out what Charlie used for the fake blood though.

The only thing that I didn’t like about this episode is the fact that in Mac’s mind he wasn’t getting fat, he’s simply been “gaining mass” that would eventually turn into muscle. Given how obsessed with being muscular Mac has always been, you would think that he would know the difference between gaining muscle and gaining body fat. As soon as I heard that Mac was going to get fat this season, I predicted that something bad was going to have happened to him that would lead him to start “eating his pain”, which would lead to him getting fat. I guess I was completely wrong about that. I do think the writers’ explanation for why Mac had gained a lot of weight was a lot better and a lot funnier than my idea though.

The whole scene with Mac and Dennis at the doctor to get their results for the medical tests that they had done on them was pretty funny. Mac mispronouncing the word diabetes after the doctor told him that he had adult onset diabetes gave me quite the laugh. The fact that Dennis’ test results showed that he’s in worse shape than Mac was pretty ironic, if you ask me.

One of the things that I love the most about It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is that Dee, Dennis, Mac, Charlie and Frank have the tendency to make the most random decisions, and this episode really showcased that with Dee suddenly deciding to become a “foot girl”, Mac and Dennis deciding to go buy some crack from Roxy while they were repeatedly injecting themselves with insulin, and Frank deciding to ask Roxy to marry him. The gang’s tendency to make very impulsive and random decisions has led to a lot of my favorite moments throughout the course of the series, and I hope the writers never stop having the characters on the show be very random.

I knew going into this episode that Frank wouldn’t be marrying Roxy in the end, because the show has always kept the characters’ lives from changing very drastically in a permanent way; kind of like how nothing ever really changes on The Simpsons, Family Guy or on Seinfeld when they had Susan die from licking the toxic glue on hers’ and George’s wedding invitations. I figured that either Roxy would turn down Frank’s marriage proposal or that Frank would simply change his mind about proposing to her. I wasn’t expecting Roxy to die of a crack overdose in the middle of Frank’s marriage proposal. The whole discussion that the gang had about what to do about Roxy’s dead body since they were afraid of what the paramedics and police would do since Roxy was a prostitute and Charlie was still wearing his shirt that had the fake blood on it was beyond hilarious. I thought that the fact that they decided that Roxy would want them to leave her dead body abandoned in the hallway outside Frank and Charlie’s apartment and simply use a pay phone to make an anonymous call to the police was really messed up, and yet it was really funny at the same time. The fact that they are all very self-centered is another thing that I’ve always loved about the show.

All in all, I absolutely loved this episode for the most part, and I think this episode was a great way to start season seven. The only thing that bugged me about this episode was definitely the bad explanation as to why Mac had gained so much weight. It just seemed a little out of character for Mac to actually believe that he would gain muscle mass by getting fat first given the fact that he’s always been pretty obsessed with his looks. I think the writers could have handled that better than they did.

After taking everything about this episode into consideration, I give this episode a rating of an A-.
