It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia: This has got to be the most bizarre vacation ever! (My thoughts episode 7x02: The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore)

I have to say that I loved this episode. I don’t think that it was quite as good as the season premiere was, but I still loved it. This episode wasn’t really what I was expecting it to be like before I saw it. I thought that the episode was going to involve some kind of parody of the reality TV show Jersey Shore. I wasn’t expecting the episode to be about the gang actually going to the Jersey Shore.

The highlight of this episode was definitely Charlie. I thought he was absolutely hilarious in this episode. I love how excited he got when Dee and Dennis were talking about how much fun they had going on vacations to the Jersey Shore when they were younger and they all decided to take a trip to the Jersey Shore. I thought it was kind of weird that Charlie said he needed to knock himself out either by inhaling chlorophorum or gasoline fumes from what looked like a jug of gasoline before they left. However, the rest of the gang said that they should knock him out themselves when he wasn’t expecting it; otherwise he might wake up on the way there and freak out. It was even funnier when Mac started trying to knock Charlie out seconds later at the end of the cold open.

Charlie definitely has the weirdest and most unusual backstory of all the characters that I’ve ever seen on TV, but that’s a big part of what I love so much about him as a character. I can’t believe that Charlie had never seen the ocean before this episode. I also love how Dee and Dennis told him to not try and swim to Europe when he asked if Europe was on the other side of the ocean. Charlie has obviously had a very sheltered life, but that’s always been major source of humor in terms of his character.

Also, I can’t believe that Charlie continued to drink the bottle of sunscreen lotion that he had been drinking after Dee and Dennis told him that they hadn’t filled any bottles of sunscreen with alcohol for him like they had done for themselves so they could drink alcohol in places where alcohol isn’t allowed without getting in trouble. However, the fact that Charlie is very willing to eat and drink things that people shouldn’t normally eat or drink is definitely another one of the things that I’ve always liked the most about Charlie.

I also thought that Dee and Dennis were pretty funny in this episode with how desperately they were trying to convince themselves that the Jersey Shore was the same fun place it was when they were younger after they saw how the beach had lots of trash strewn all over the place and that there were stray dogs wondering around the beach. Things took a very weird turn when they were walking under the boardwalk with Charlie and they saw two homeless guys having anal sex with each other. I have to say that was so weird and so random, but that’s one of things that I love about this show. The weirdest and most random things can happen on the show, and yet they are usually funny. The whole thing with them finding the two homeless guys having anal sex with each other and their reactions to it was definitely pretty funny.

Charlie freaked out at the sight of the two homeless guys having sex with each other and went back to the beach where he ran into the Waitress. At first she thought that he had followed her to the Jersey Shore, but he told her that he hadn’t, so she apologized to him for being mean to him. He gave her what he thought was some sort of rare “sea specimen”, but if I had to guess, it looked like it was a piece of broken glass. The Waitress and Charlie decided to hang out together, because The Waitress told him that she didn’t know why exactly, but she was in a really good mood since she was at the ocean. During a montage that they did of all the storylines toward the end of the episode, they showed Charlie and The Waitress hanging out together, laughing and having fun together on the beach. They found a stray puppy on the beach that they played with and continued to find various objects on the beach together. The Waitress gave Charlie what he thought was a rare jewel.

The next morning they woke up lying on the beach next to each other. The Waitress freaked out and asked Charlie if he had raped her last night, which he was completely disgusted by the idea of him raping her. It turns out that she had been high on ecstasy the night before, which is obviously why she was so nice to him. It also turns out that the thing that she had given Charlie was just a piece of broken glass, and not a rare jewel like he thought. Despite the fact he had learned that The Waitress had been high on ecstasy all night, Charlie was still really happy that he got to spend the night hanging out with The Waitress.

I really hope that somewhere down the line The Waitress will finally start to feel the same way about Charlie as he feels about her. Although, I don’t want them to do it as some long will they or won’t they storyline with the two of them, because I don’t think that kind of thing would fit in with the style of comedy that It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia does. If they can do it without it coming across as that kind of romance, then I want Charlie and The Waitress to end up together. I’m not too worried about the writers going down that road with handling a potential romance between Charlie and The Waitress though. I suppose that some people might think their relationship is already a will they or won’t they kind of romance, but they definitely aren’t Ross and Rachael. That’s for sure. Since the FX network has already announced that the show has been renewed for an eighth and ninth season, with an option for a tenth season, maybe the writers can wait until the second to last season or the last season at the latest to have Charlie and The Waitress get together.

After the whole ordeal with finding the two homeless guys having sex, Dee and Dennis decided to go on an amusement park ride to try and get their minds off of what they had seen, but some of Dee’s hair got caught in the amusement park ride right before it dropped and it got ripped out of her scalp. That was really gross, especially how they showed it getting ripped out of her scalp. They decided to go to the hospital to see if the doctor could stitch the patch of hair back onto her scalp, but a dog that was in the hospital got a hold of it and ran off with the clump of Dee’s hair. I’m not a doctor, but I don’t think it’s possible to sow a patch of someone’s hair back onto his or her scalp.

I thought it was hilarious when Dee and Dennis saw a girl in the waiting area in the emergency room and start talking about her, creating a horrific life story for her, which involved her getting pregnant, getting addicted to drugs and having child protective services take the baby away from her while she was right there listening to them talk about her. I loved Dee and Dennis’ reactions when she told them that she could hear them talking about her, but she told them that they weren’t too far off in terms of how her life had actually turned out. That was priceless. :)

As much as I loved that scene, their storyline really fell flat with me for the rest of the episode and just became too bizarre for me to find funny. I know that It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has always had a tendency to have the characters get into bizarre situations, and I usually find them funny, but in this case I didn’t think it was too funny. It was just weird, if you ask me.

What happened with Dee and Dennis was that they ended up going off with the girl from the hospital and some of her friends who from the looks of what they showed in the montage of all the characters’ storylines at the end of the episode committed an armed robbery at a convenient store, which led to one of the girl’s friends being shot and the guy who was shot was taken to a doctor who they held at gunpoint while he treated the guy who was shot. The girl’s friends also held Dee and Dennis at gunpoint at some point when the people they were with were forcing them to dig a grave on the beach to bury a dead body, but they managed to get away from that girl and her friends by throwing some sand in their faces and running away. Maybe if they had actually shown some more details of what happened, then I might have been able to appreciate that part of the episode more, but then again maybe the writers intended for the viewers to be confused and weirded out by the situation Dee and Dennis were involved in. All I know is that I thought it was weird, and it brought the episode down a bit for me.

Meanwhile, Mac and Frank were hanging out on the beach eating a rum-soaked ham when they decided to go out into the ocean on an inflatable raft, which they ended up falling asleep on and at some point while they were sleeping, the rum-soaked ham ended up falling overboard. Since they were stuck on that inflatable raft in the middle of the ocean without any way to steer the raft back to shore, Frank quickly turned into “survival mode” and started talking about eating Mac, which of course freaked the hell out of Mac. I would have been freaked out too if I were in his shoes. Frank can be very weird sometimes, but he’s always extremely funny when he’s acting weird.

They ended up being rescued by some people on an Italian cruise ship right after they had accidently punctured the inflatable raft with Frank’s knife while they were fighting over it. In the montage they were shone getting spray tans and partying on the cruise ship. This whole storyline was another one of the highlights of the episode for me.

They all ended meeting up at the motel the next morning, Dee and Dennis couldn’t wait to leave the Jersey Shore after the night that they had, and Mac refused to believe that Charlie had actually spent the night with The Waitress, but Charlie was still feeling ecstatic about getting to spend the night with The Waitress. If you think about it, Charlie actually had the most normal evening out of all of them, which is weird, because he had been drinking bottles of sunscreen all day and The Waitress had been high on ecstasy the whole night. Normal or not, Charlie definitely had the best time at the Jersey Shore since he was only one who was still feeling happy and excited about the trip when they left the Jersey Shore.

All in all, I loved this episode for the most part. Charlie’s storyline was definitely my favorite storyline of the episode. I thought Charlie Day was beyond hilarious in this episode. I also found everything with Mac and Frank in this episode pretty funny. As I mentioned earlier, I thought that Dee and Dennis’ storyline was absolutely hilarious up until the point in the episode when they went off with that girl from the hospital and her friends, then their storyline just feel flat for me.

All that being said, I give this episode a rating of B+.
