Modern Family: There’s nothing better than a Dunphy/Pritchett/Delgado/Tucker family vacation. :) (My thoughts on episode 3x01: Dude Ranch)

I’m sorry that I haven’t gotten any thoughts post for the season three episodes of Modern Family that have aired so far. It took Apple several days to get the first two episodes of the season posted on iTunes. Plus, I’ve been very busy with my schoolwork, but things with my classes will be pretty light for the rest of the week, so I’m going to use some of the extra time that I have on my hands to get caught up on writing my blog posts. Anyway, I digress; I’m going to move onto my thoughts on this episode.

I have to say that I absolutely loved this episode for the most part. One of the highlights of the episode for me was definitely Phil wearing his cowboy hat for pretty much the whole episode. I thought Ty Burrell looked both funny and hot wearing that hat, and him talking with a fake southern accent made it even funnier. I also loved Cameron’s cowboy outfit and the outfit that he dressed up Lily in at the beginning of the episode as well. Cameron’s habit of dressing up Lily in various outfits is something that I’ve always loved about him as a character.

That’s definitely one of the things that I liked the most about this episode; the fact that the writers brought back a lot of running jokes and themes on the show in this episode: Claire’s fear of flying in airplanes; Cameron liking to dress up Lily in special outfits; Dylan’s crush on Claire; Jay making wisecracks towards Phil about his manhood, etc.

The other main highlight of this episode for me was definitely the fact that they had characters that haven’t interacted one-on-one very much in the past, such as Luke and Mitchell, as well as Claire and Dylan, interacting with each other quite a bit in this episode. I’ve always liked Luke, but starting last season I really feel like the writers started giving Nolan Gould a lot of great material that allowed Luke to really stand out and shine as a character. This episode is a perfect example of that, and it was a lot of fun watching Luke and Mitchell together. I loved it when Luke asked him if he could keep a secret, and Mitchell told him that he had kept a pretty big one for twenty-three years. That was hilarious. :)

The scene where they were blowing up the birdhouse was also pretty funny, and I’m glad that spending time with Luke helped Mitchell not be so afraid of the thought of being the father of a boy. I’m really interested to see where this whole adoption storyline with Mitchell and Cameron wanting to adopt another child, but a boy this time so Lily can have a brother goes. The whole thing with Cameron making the pop-up scrapbook about their family for potential adoptive mothers to look at was absolutely priceless.

The interactions between Claire and Dylan in this episode were absolutely hilarious as well, especially the scene between them in the tent. I can’t believe that Dylan told Claire that hypothetically if Phil were out of the picture, he would be more than happy to marry her and raise Hailey, Alex, and Luke as if they were his own children since he was under the impression that Claire was interested him romantically. That would be beyond awkward since he’s been dating Hailey on and off since the show started.

Claire kind of bothered me though with the way she acted when Dylan was asking Hailey to marry him. I know that Claire has never really approved of Dylan, but I thought the way she interrupted his proposal and the things she said about him to Hailey when he was right there were pretty rude. I also liked that they continued the running joke that Phil really likes Dylan, because that’s one aspect of the show that I’ve always loved.

I will say that I agree with Claire that Hailey and Dylan are too young and aren’t ready to get married, I just wish she would have handled that situation better. I’m also glad that Hailey is mature enough to know that she shouldn’t marry Dylan, at least not yet. Sometimes she seems so impulsive when it comes to her love life that I wouldn’t have been too surprised if she had said yes to Dylan’s marriage proposal.

It looks like they are writing Dylan off the show, because at the end of the episode he told Hailey that he had gotten a job working at the dude ranch. I’m not sure, but I think I might have read somewhere that Reid Ewing has been cast on another TV show, which is why they are writing him off the show. Regardless of the writers’ reasons for writing Dylan off the show, it does make me feel sad that he’s gone now. I’ve always loved Dylan, and I have always especially loved his songs. They are hilarious.

I thought the manager of the dude ranch was pretty funny, and I thought the role was very well cast. I loved all of his nicknames that he had for everyone, especially how his nickname for Claire was “Bossy”. Phil’s reaction to Claire’s nickname being Bossy was classic Phil. It was also really fun to see Jay get jealous when he saw the way that the manager of the dude ranch acted towards Gloria.

There were only two things about this episode that I didn’t really care for. First and foremost, I didn’t really like Alex’s storyline with that boy who kissed her. That kid really annoyed me, which caused the storyline to fall flat with me. The second thing that I didn’t like about this episode was how Gloria talked really loud for the first half of the episode because her ears still hadn’t popped from flying on the airplane to Wyoming. I didn’t really think that was all that funny, and it was kind of annoying. Other than those two things, I absolutely loved the rest of the episode.

This really was a great episode, largely in part to the continuation of running jokes on the show and the interactions between Mitchell and Luke and the scenes with Claire and Dylan. All that being said, I give this episode a rating of B+.
