It’s been a while since I wrote my thoughts post on the season premiere, and I got busy writing posts for other TV shows, but I’m going to try and get caught up on writing thoughts posts for each season four episode of 90210 soon. Anyway, here are my thoughts on this episode.
I have to say that I thought that this episode was okay, but it definitely wasn’t great. It definitely left a lot to be desired. The thing that I liked the most about this episode was Liam’s storyline, which dealt mostly with the aftermath of Liam waking up hung over and realizing that he had bought the bar at the beach. At first he wanted to get out of the sale, but he quickly decided that he wanted to keep the bar after all. I don’t quite understand Liam’s sudden change of heart about the bar. He literally changed his mind about wanting to keep the bar after all in about five seconds, which I thought was kind of stupid. I do think the whole thing with Liam owning a bar could be very interesting. I’m really glad that they addressed the fact that Liam isn’t old enough to buy or sell alcohol. Austin (The cowboy) offered to sign Liam’s liquor license since he’s twenty-one. I’m not sure it’s actually legal to do that in real life since Austin doesn’t own the bar, but I’m glad that they at least addressed that detail and didn’t completely overlook it.
They also gave an explanation for Liam’s bizarre behavior in the season premiere. It turns out that Liam got sick one night while he was working on the fishing boat during the summer and another guy on the boat was killed in an accident while he was covering Liam’s shift. It also turns out that Liam had begun to develop feelings for the guy’s wife, Jane, who showed up unexpectedly to talk to him about her husband’s death. I’m not entirely sure why that prompted Liam to become so intent on asking Annie to marry him though. I’m guessing that the whole incident must have shaken up Liam a lot and caused him to develop a “You never know what’s going to happen, so you have to live each day like it’s your last.”, mentality. Also, maybe he thought that by asking Annie to marry him it would make his feelings for Jane go away. I’m not sure, but he really pissed me off at the end of the episode because he ends up giving into his feelings for Jane and sleeps with her. I’m a huge fan of the Annie and Liam pairing, but I hate that the writers keep having them get together and break up again so quickly without really any buildup to it. I just wish that the writers would have Annie and Liam get together and stay together for a while. Also, Liam hooking up with Jane really ticked me off since he told Annie that she was the only girl that he had ever really loved. I think if Liam truly loved Annie as much as he said he did, he wouldn’t have been able to move on so quickly.
I have to say that I absolutely loved Austin in this episode. He was dealing with the fact that Adrianna was refusing to leave his place the next morning after making out with her the previous night. I do think that Adrianna sticking around so long the next day was kind of weird. It’s like she didn’t understand the concept of a casual hookup.
Speaking of Adrianna, just her mere presence in this episode annoyed me. What she did to Silver switching her bipolar medication with placebos last season was downright despicable, and I don’t think she can ever be redeemed. I really wish that the producers had kept Trevor Donovan as a series regular and slowly phased Adrianna out of the show instead of Teddy this season since Teddy’s coming out storyline was definitely one of the best things about season. However, I wouldn’t mind if they made Justin Deely, who plays Austin, a series regular. I’m so glad that Liam refused to hire Adrianna as a waitress at the bar, because he knew that everyone else wouldn’t want to come to the bar if he did hire her.
Dixon spent the episode working on a demo to give to a big-time music producer, and Adrianna ended up helping him with it. As much as I hate Adrianna now, I do think that Dixon and Adrianna would make a very good couple though since music is a big part of both of their lives. Dixon began to feel exhausted while he was trying to work on his demo, so Austin gave him some of his ADHD medication since it will have the opposite effect on people who don’t have ADHD and make them feel more energetic, which he ended up taking at the end of the episode. That was major foreshadowing to me that Dixon is going to develop a drug problem. That was just way too predictable for my taste.
The whole storyline with Naomi and Annie pledging to one of the sororities in this episode didn’t really do very much for me at all, because it reminded me too much of the whole storyline that Gossip Girl did last season with the Hamilton house initially letting Blair in, but Juliet trying to keep Serena from being able to join. They put Naomi and Annie through a bunch of hazing rituals, and in the end they invited Annie to join as a full fledged member, but didn’t give Naomi a bid to join their sorority as a full-fledged member, because she bought the house that they were planning to buy for their sorority. Annie was going to drop out of the sorority out of loyalty to Naomi because they hadn’t chosen Naomi to join as well, but she convinced Annie to not leave the sorority so she could have Annie help her get revenge on them for what they did to her.
In addition to Naomi’s storyline with the sorority, she was also having to deal with all of the kids at CU being mad at her for all of the football players testing positive for marijuana due to getting a contact high after Naomi threw Austin’s pot into the bonfire in the previous episode, which led to the entire football team being suspended from being able to play in any games. This part of Naomi’s storyline was kind of interesting, but it wasn’t extremely interesting to me either.
Annie met a guy named Jeremy, who gave her advice about college life at CU, and they flirted with each other, but in a twist it was revealed that Jeremy was actually Marla’s grandson and he told her that he would do whatever it took to keep her from getting any of Marla’s money. I guessed that Marla’s family would end up contesting her will last season. This storyline was just way too predictable, which really brought down my level of enjoyment of this storyline.
The whole storyline with Navid’s sister, Leila, pretending that she had been kidnapped in order to get money so she could move to New Mexico with her twenty-three year old boyfriend and open a tattoo parlor with him was beyond stupid. It was pretty obvious from the fake ransom video that they made that Leila wasn’t in any real danger. Leila’s boyfriend ended up blackmailing him into giving him seventy-five thousand dollars, which forced Navid to reluctantly ask his uncle for the money to pay off Leila’s boyfriend.
All in all, I thought that this episode was extremely average. It really bothered me how predictable the whole thing with Annie inheriting Marla’s money worked out. Pretty much all of the storylines in this episode were way too predictable for my taste. I found Naomi’s storyline with the sorority very unoriginal given the fact that Gossip Girl did a storyline that was similar to it last season. Like I said, Adrianna mere presence in this episode annoyed me, and the whole kidnapping storyline really was beyond idiotic. In terms of what I did like about this episode, I loved Liam’s storyline. I’m also really liking the character Austin so far, and I loved all of his scenes in this episode. Dixon’s storyline seems very predictable, but I do think that it has the potential to be kind of interesting.
All things considered, I give this episode a rating of a C.
