Ricky Gervais to Return as Golden Globes Host - TVLine

It’s official: Ricky Gervais will complete the hat trick, hosting the Golden Globes for a third straight year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which throws the annual kudosfest, announced Gervais’ return on Wednesday afternoon, via Twitter. NBC will as is tradition broadcast the fast-and-loose awards ceremony on January 15, 2012.

Gervais wasted no time in laying claim to his comedy turf, tweeting that he had already warned Billy Crystal — who is set to host the Academy Awards weeks later, on Feb. 26 — to “not use any of my Holocaust or pedophile material…. He agreed.”

After being criticized for being unexpectedly bland during his first turn as Globes host, gervais drew some fire last January, by taking volatile shots at, for example, A-listers Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp’s performances in The Tourist, Scientology and Robert Downey Jr.’s past drug use, and by introducing presenters in snarky ways (e.g. dubbing Bruce Willis “Ashton Kutcher’s dad”).

That said, the funny man’s Globes encore was watched by almost 17 million total viewers, trouncing all competition in its time period and slightly building on the awards show’s previous audience.
