According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, the CW has renewed Gossip Girl for a sixth and final season, which will consist of 11 episodes. Here's an excerpt from the original article, which gives some more details regarding Gossip Girl's final season:
What’s more, showrunner Stephanie Savage — who developed the show with Josh Schwartz — has promoted Co-EP Sara Goodman to exec producer, replacing Smash-bound Josh Safran.

My thoughts: Even though I think Gossip Girl has seriously gone downhill in quality, I'm still beyond thrilled that Gossip Girl has been renewed for a sixth season, especially since the season five finale is apparently supposed to end with a huge cliffhanger, so it's nice that the CW is giving Gossip Girl the chance to end with what I hope will be proper closure instead of just canceling it abruptly. Although, given how horrible the ratings have been this year, I can't say that I would have been surprised if they had canceled it. From a business standpoint, I honestly don't know how the network was able to justify renewing Gossip Girl for a sixth and finale season given the show's recent ratings.
I'm also really glad that Josh Safran has stepped down as the showrunner for Gossip Girl in order to be the new showrunner for Smash, because I think Safran is the person who's primarily to blame for the severe decline in the quality of the writing for Gossip Girl the last few seasons. Sara Goodman has written several of my all-time favorite episodes of Gossip Girl, so I feel somewhat optimistic that Gossip Girl will be able to end on a good note with her as the showrunner.
Regarding the number of episodes that was ordered for Gossip Girl's final season, I have no idea why they chose to renew it for 11 episodes. Since the media has been saying for months that Gossip Girl was most likely going to get a shortened sixth and final season, I was expecting them to order 13 episodes like they did with One Tree Hill. If they didn't want to order that many episodes, I would have said that a 10 episode final season made more sense. Having the final season be only 11 episodes just seems like a very random number. If I had to guess how they decided on how many episodes of Gossip Girl to order for next season, I would say that it's probably because in the case of most of the CW's shows a season consists of 22, sometimes 24 episodes, so they decided to order 11 episodes since that's half of 22. Regardless, I'm just happy that Gossip Girl is going to be getting another season.
