Watching the season eight finale of Grey’s Anatomy has really shaken me up, and I can’t stop thinking about it, so I’ve decided that I wanted to write a thoughts post on it; that being said, here are my thoughts on the season finale.
First things first, we finally found out that the big death that the writers have been talking about for months was….Lexie. I hate that Lexie is the character that they killed off since I’ve always loved her, especially this season. Her death was beyond heartbreaking, but I’m glad that Mark at least got the chance to tell Lexie that he loved her and she got to tell him that she still loved him too before she died. I know that entertainment news reporters reported that Sandra Oh had signed a new two-year contract, but I’m not going to lie, I was still hoping that was going to turn out to be a misdirect and that Christina was going to be the big death since I’ve always hated Christina.
Lexie wasn’t the only one whose life was hanging in the balance in the season finale. Meredith couldn’t find Derek at the beginning of the episode and was frantically searching for him. Derek was initially lying on the ground somewhere with his arm stuck in a piece of the plane debris, which he had to rather painfully pull out of the plane debris. Later Meredith had to perform a procedure to try and save his hand, which had been injured very badly. Given the fact that a surgeon’s hands and their need for good motor control in their hands is very important for them to be able to do their job, I’m wondering if that was the writers’ way of setting up a storyline for next season where Derek isn’t able to be a neurosurgeon anymore. I hope that won’t be the case though since the writers already did a similar storyline with Burke.
I thought that the season finale was very well edited, especially how the scenes with everyone stranded in the middle of nowhere corresponded with the scenes at the hospital I especially liked the part of the episode where Derek was preforming a rather gruesome medical surgical procedure using items from the plane to treat Mark’s cardiac tamponade, while they showed Teddy and the other doctors performing the same procedure back at Seattle Grace Mercy West.
This may sound very random, but when I was watching the beginning of the season finale I couldn’t help but think about the series premiere of Lost when all of the characters were running around screaming in shock, much like the plane crash survivors on Lost did at the beginning of the series premiere. I was half expecting the smoke monster to show up at any moment.
It turns out that Chyler Leigh isn’t the only cast member who’s leaving the show in this episode. TVLine’s Michael Ausiello just reported in his recap of the episode (Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Finale Recap -- Major Character Death - TVLine) that Shonda Rhimes announced on Twitter after the season finale aired on the West Coast that Kim Raver has decided not to renew her contract with the show, which is obviously the reason why Owen fired Teddy forcing her to accept a job that she had been offered by Metcom, which she wanted to accept because the hospital reminded her of Henry, but she had turned down out of loyalty to Owen, because she felt like he needed him. It really pissed me off that Teddy told Owen that wanted to stay out of loyalty to him as a friend, only to have him fire her. I hate, hate, hate Owen for doing that. The fact that it’s been announced that Kim Raver is also leaving the show makes thinking about the season finale even more painful for me since Lexie and Teddy are two of my favorite characters on the show.
Teddy wasn’t the only one who accepted new job offers in this episode. Jackson decided to take the Tulane job offer. I don’t know what the status of Jesse Williams contract is, but if I had to guess Jesse Williams won’t be leaving the show and something will happen causing him to stay at Seattle Grace Mercy West. I really hope that Jesse Williams isn’t leaving the show too. Alex also accepted the job that he was offered at Johns Hopkins, which he told Arizona in a voicemail. Given the fact that Justin Chambers recently signed a new two-year contract with the show, something is obviously going to happen that will keep Alex at the hospital.
April had a meltdown toward the end episode about everything that’s happened to her recently and the prospect of Jackson leaving Seattle when she was with him. She basically ended things with him, saying that she always thought that the man she would lose her virginity to was her husband and that she was afraid of what Jesus thinks of her having slept with Jackson when they aren’t married. Personally, I think that the whole thing with April saying that she hadn’t lost her virginity yet because of her religious beliefs is all very random. When the writers first established that April was a virgin, she said that it was because she was waiting to meet the right guy and she wanted her first time to be special. I’m just having a really hard time understanding the sudden change in April’s reasoning for wanting to wait to have sex for the first time. I don’t know if the writers thought that it would make for an interesting story, but the sudden change in April’s thinking about sex just isn’t working for me personally.
This episode wasn’t all drama and tears though. Bailey ended up telling Ben that when she had showed up at his apartment wearing a thong that was her way of proposing to him. (That happened in last week’s episode) After Bailey and Ben talked they ended up officially getting engaged. Although, given the fact that Ben mentioned at the beginning of the episode that he had been offered a job in Los Angeles, I’m wondering how that will affect his relationship with Bailey. I’m wondering if the writers are planning to write Ben out next season, or if they will still get married Ben working in Los Angeles is how the writers will explain why he isn’t always around since Jason George is only a recurring guest-star, and Callie mentioned that they could have commuter marriage.
I liked Richard’s storyline where he was planning a dinner party for all of the residents. Toward the end of the episode people were starting to gather for his dinner party and were waiting for the others to arrive and Callie was at home getting ready for a romantic evening with Arizona, not knowing that their plane had crashed. I’m wondering if the residents not showing up for the dinner party is what’s going to lead them to start realizing something happened to the plane. They also had some dialogue from a person at flight control toward the end of the episode saying that they were starting to get worried since the residents’ plane hadn’t returned to Seattle yet.
Toward the end of the episode Arizona’s condition continued to deteriorate when she started coughing up blood. That definitely isn’t good. I don’t know what the status of Jessica Capshaw’s contract, but I hope that wasn’t the writers’ way of setting up her exit from the show, especially after Callie’s speech to April about how life can change in an instant. I really like Callie and Arizona as a couple, so I really don’t want Arizona to die. Mark’s condition also wasn’t looking too good either. I’m wondering if Mark is going to die too at the beginning of the next season too. I hope that’s not the case since he’s another one of my favorite characters, and I would hate for the show to lose Eric Dane/Mark too so soon after Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver have left the show.
All in all, I thought that this was a very intense and heartbreaking finale. I hate that two of my favorite actors are leaving the show, and there’s still the possibility that more actors will be leaving the show in the fall depending on the status of their contracts. I hope that’s not the case though. I do think that the season finale was a little rushed and that the episode could have been a little better if it had been a two-hour season finale instead of just a one-hour finale. Other than that, I thought it was a really good finale, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the fall.
That being said, I give this episode a rating of a B+.
