Once Upon a Time: Joanna Garcia-Swisher Cast as Ariel in Season 3-TVLine

Once Upon a Time Cast Mermaid Ariel

According to TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, Joanna Garcia-Swisher has been cast as Ariel and will be guest-starring in at least two episodes of Once Upon a Time's upcoming third season. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Swisher's role:

An ABC rep confirms for TVLine that the Reba/Privileged alum will play the mermaid with moxie in at least two episodes, starting with the sixth installment of Season 3. TV Guide Magazine first reported on the casting.

Although Ariel’s appearance on the show — and often with Swisher’s name loosely attached — has been rumored since Season 1, the character’s Season 3 debut was confirmed at last month’s Comic-Con, in a teaser reel that showed a mysterious being sneaking up on a dwarf, stealing the fork (!) out of his lunchbox and vanishing into the ocean. Then, with the flick of a glistening fin, the redhead revealed herself and swam away.

Yet despite the context of the teaser (a la the previous Comic-Con’s misleading glimpse of Captain Hook), Ariel will not surface in Storybrooke but in another realm.

My thoughts: First off, I'd like to apologize for not posting this sooner. I had been meaning to post this news the day that it was announced, but I had company over that day, and I kept putting off posting it until now. That being said, I've been a huge fan of Joanna's ever since she was on Reba and I think she's a very talented actress, so I'm very confident that she'll do a great job playing Ariel. I always thought that Joanna was very attractive back when she had blonde hair, but I definitely think she looks even better now with red hair, so I'm personally glad that she has continued to wear her hair red, even after Privileged was canceled. Based on how she looks with red hair, I think Joanna is the perfect fit for the role of Ariel. As weird as this may sound, I think she definitely resembles Ariel from the Disney movie. That being said, this really is exciting casting news and I can't wait to see how she fits into the show next season, especially with a large chunk of the main characters going to Neverland in search of Henry. I'm definitely very excited for season 3 of Once Upon a Time.
