Elementary: Watson related scoop from Entertainment Weekly's Sandra Gonzalez

Here's some scoop on Elementary from Entertainment Weekly's Sandra Gonzalez's The Spoiler Room column, which was posted on 12/6/13.

Let’s talk Elementary for a moment, please? Could you tell me if we’ll learn more about Watson in the coming episodes? I’m a bit unsatisfied with the way they’ve been handling her backstory. We had a brilliant episode in which we’ve learned about what happened in the OR, but ever since then, and before even, we sometimes learn more about the characters from the case of the week than we learn about her. She gets a friend for like 2 seconds in a episode and that’s it. I’m asking this because the writers and Lucy Liu keep saying she’s supposed to be Sherlock’s equal and not his sidekick, so I’d like to know about her, at least, as much as I know about Sherlock. I’d really appreciate if you could answer this one. –Amanda
A script is being written as I type that will very much be a peek into Joan’s family, in particular her father! “I don’t think we’ve ever said any of this explicitly in the show, but the way we’ve always imagined it is Joan’s birth father fell out of the picture and her mother remarried with the last name Watson. So this story is based on that understanding of her circumstances,” says executive producer Rob Doherty. ”We’re just going to find out a little more about what went down when she was a kid and a little more about the status of her birth dad.” But, he adds, this isn’t an episode that will see the introduction of her father, saying, ”We may meet somebody down the line, but this episode is another little window into who Joan is and where she comes from.”
