According to TVLine's Rebecca Iannucci, Showtime has renewed Penny Dreadful for a second season consisting of 10 episodes, which is two more episodes than season 1 will have. Here's an excerpt from the article:
“Picking up Penny Dreadful was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made,” Showtime president David Nevins said in a statement. “[Series creator] John Logan has deftly created an epic series that has drawn raves from a wide-range of audiences from quality drama lovers to critics, to hardcore genre fans.”
Episode 5 — in which viewers will learn of the shocking bond that connects Sir Malcolm (played by Timothy Dalton), Vanessa (Eva Green) and Mina (Olivia Llewellyn) — airs this Sunday at 10/9c, prefaced by a catch-up marathon airing Saturday from 6 to 10 pm EST.

My thoughts: Let me start off by saying that I'm definitely very excited about this news. Before Penny Dreadful premiered, I decided that I would check the show out once I found out that Josh Hartnett was going to be one of the stars of the show since I've been a huge fan of his for many years now. While I was initially looking forward to watching the show mainly because of Josh, I actually wasn't expecting Penny Dreadful to be all that great. Now that Penny Dreadful has premiered and I've watched several episodes, I have to say that Josh has been doing a phenomenal job on the show so far, and Penny Dreadful has turned out to be an altogether truly fantastic show. While I'm really loving everything that's going on with Josh's character, Ethan Chandler, I'm also really enjoying the character Dorian Gray. Victor Frankenstein's storyline is probably my favorite storyline on the show at the moment. That being said, I'm really glad that the show has been doing well for Showtime, and I can't wait to see how the show continues to evolve as it continues.
