Right off the bat, I have to say that I definitely went into reading Fearless with certain expectations, and I was also worried that Lauren Roberts might disappoint me by ending the series by having Paedyn discover that she has powers too, and that she’s not actually “Powerless” after all. Thankfully, I was thrilled to see that Roberts didn’t go that route, and Fearless was a very satisfying conclusion to Roberts’ Powerless series. However, this book was still full of its fair share of “scandalous” plot twists.
Fearless’ biggest strength is definitely the fact that Roberts did a fantastic job of bringing the series full circle in many ways by having Paedyn compete in a whole new set of trials, like she did when she competed in the Purging Trials in the first book. Having Paedyn face a whole new set of Purging Trials in the final book of the series was definitely a great idea on Roberts’ part to end the series that way. It also made Fearless a very action-packed book. Still, at the same time, I felt like Roberts did a great job of having these Purging Trials play out differently for Paedyn in this book compared to the way the Purging Trials were handled in the first book of the Powerless series, which I thought was very important for her to do, so that Fearless wouldn’t come across as lacking originality, but especially since this was the last book in the series, aside from Fearful.
The writing for Paedyn and Kai’s relationship and the moments between them throughout the book were once again a major strength for me. However, Paedyn and Kai’s relationship is something that I’ve always loved about the Powerless series.
Roberts’ writing for Kitt throughout Fearless, and her portrayal of his descent into insanity, was handled very well, and the chapters that were written from Kitt’s point of view were a major highlight of the book for me, especially the one at the end of the book that was written from Kitt’s point of view, and him being in the afterlife.
The chapters written from Edric’s point of view were fascinating and did a great job of adding additional world-building details to the series, even though they were revealed towards the very end of the series. However, the chapters written from Edric’s point of view also came across as “too little, too late” in terms of the backstory and world-building details they provided. The whole reveal of Paedyn’s parentage and backstory in those chapters really put somewhat of a “soap opera twist” on the Powerless series that I wasn’t exactly a huge fan of, even though I’ve been a HUGE fan of soap operas ever since I was a kid, and I’m thirty-eight years old now.
As for my thoughts on the series' ending, the final confrontation between Kai and Kitt was very well written by Roberts. That being said, it was definitely weird that Paedyn and Kai chose to name their daughter after Kitt after everything that happened with him in their lives.
All things considered, Fearless definitely serves as a great, but not perfect, conclusion to Roberts’ Powerless series. As I mentioned earlier, the chapters written from Edric’s point of view were definitely fascinating, and they did a great job of adding additional world-building details to the series, even if they were revealed towards the very end of the series, but sadly, they also came across to me as being “too little, too late”.
That being said, my final score for Fearless is 8 out of 10.
