After eight seasons, co-creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson knew they had to answer one question when they sat down to write the series finale: What do they want the show to be about? “This show’s always been about family; this show’s always been about huge, emotional loss; it’s always been about death and grief,” Williamson says. “It started on those foundations and from it we built a love story, but what are we truly trying to say about these people and how do we want to put an end to them? What was the point? Julie had one answer and I had another answer, and they’re both spoken in the show. It’s all contained within the last act of the finale.”

There’s no better place for nostalgia than a series finale, and this one is going to be packed full of it — so much so that you’ll even recognize a line or two. “Remember when Damon was dangling Vicki over the building and he says, ‘For me to know and you to dot dot dot.’ Spoiler alert: You hear that line in the finale,” executive producer Kevin Williamson says. “There’s little Easter eggs like that throughout the whole thing.” So which lines do you hope to hear again?

Let’s start with the good news here: Executive producer Julie Plec knows full well how much the fans value a good dance. Now for the bad: “I think I can finally admit defeat that we weren’t able to fit in a final decade dance before the series ends, which I’m very sad about,” Plec says. “But we do have Miss Mystic Falls coming up, and of course, our most famous dancing has been done there.”
