Ausiello: If the darkness of the Bill/Virginia/Dan triangle (not to mention that zoo scene) brought you down last season, Caitlin Fitzgerald says the upcoming Season 4 will pick you up, being “a lot lighter and funnier.” Evidence? “I haven’t cried one time. I barely recognize this character!” She adds that Bill’s long-suffering Mrs. does experience “a lot of righteous anger” and shares “a tingle” with the lawyer character played by About a Boy’s David Walton — who she acted opposite on New Girl last season.

Ausiello: When the Showtime drama flashes forward to the mid-1960s, it will introduce a real master of sex — Hugh Hefner, no less. And, since the casting call for the potentially recurring role notes that, in addition to being an smooth operator and gifted schmoozer, the Playboy publisher is 40 during this period, I can’t help but note that Jon Hamm is between series. (Also worth noting: He’d never in a million years do it.)

Question: Any scoop on the upcoming season of Masters of Sex? We already know Allison Janney and Beau Bridges will return, and obviously the two protagonists are going to be there but, what about the rest of the characters? —Argi
Ausiello: Teddy Sears is out at Austin (although a guest appearance or two is a possibility), and Virginia’s kids, Tessa and Henry, are being recast as teenagers — to accommodate a six-year time jump and also to allow the show to explore the pair’s burgeoning sexuality — particularly that of Tessa (who will be quite the little minx).

This is one rumor that is so true. And guess what? Beau Bridges will be back, too. Huzzah! "I will say you will see both of them back for sure,"showrunner Michelle Ashford reveals. "They're now in our world and, as much as they can, given their other commitments, they are going to stay in our world because we just realized what they bring is so rich." But don't get too greedy as you won't be seeing too much of Janney, given her commitment to Mom. "Can Allison be in every episode? That'd be tough. But can she have a great story? Yeah!"

Ausiello: Season 3 will time-jump further “into the ’60s,” Showtime president David Nevins told reporters this week at the Television Critics Assoc. winter press tour, noting that it’s “a pretty big leap” from 1961, where Season 2 ended. As such, when we next meet up with Bill and Virginia, they’ll be grappling with their celebrity status. “Last season was kind of a down period for them,” Nevins noted. “This season will be [about] fame and celebrity, and the effect of what they’ve done has started to have on the world.”

How wacky is she? She’s a palm reader who really, truly believes she’s a psychic. But, on the other hand, she’s also with-it enough to be unashamed of her lesbianism. And, since she’s still carrying a torch for Betty — and she’s probably the ex-hooker’s soul mate — I’d wager there’s some great material in store for whomever’s cast, as well as for Ashford and Greg Grunberg, who plays odd-man-out Gene.

Joan: I loved the Masters of Sex pilot, but I especially loved the supporting characters, like prostitute/test subject Betty. What's next for her?
Betty's role in Dr. Masters' study is about to get a little more significant as he's forced to move said study into her brothel, but her hospitality comes with a couple of somewhat surprising requests. Just don't expect the doctor to immediately respond with kindness, or tact. Despite the nature of his studies, Bill has some serious sex-related hang-ups to work through, and his interactions with Betty seem like just the tip of that iceberg. Bonus spoiler: Sexy Dr. "Eric Northman Wannabe" Langham is back in episode two, but unfortunately he's got clothes on. Sorry!

I just watched the first episode of Masters of Sex (premiering Sunday), thanks to Showtime, and was wondering how are they going to play the Masters and Johnson relationship? Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan have amazing chemistry together! –Ti
If you’ve seen the premiere, you know very well the huge cliffhanger it leaves us with. And let’s just say that before an answer can be spoken, something quite dramatic happens to interrupt the moment. P.S. I totally agree about the lead actors; Caplan in particular is wowing me in every episode.
