As reported here, the pilot’s screening at this month’s Monte-Carlo Television Festival in essence marks the launch of the big push toward securing a Stateside home; we will of course keep you posted. And you are correct, rumors of Crackle giving a home to the series here are inaccurate, I have been assured.

During our November Sweep preview chat, I was sure to ask the co-showrunners what exactly Kristopher Polaha will be up to on the series, besides being tall. “He’s playing a public defender who comes in [during the fall finale ‘Mr. & Mrs. Castle’] and presents with some unexpected complexity,” said Alexi Hawley. “He’s a little bit more than what he seems. “The design of his character,” Terence Paul Winter added, “is that he’s immediately at odds with the folks at the 12th, while representing a murderer. He’s trying to do his job while the 12th is trying to do theirs.”

Do you have any scoop on where Castle‘s Beckett will be when Stana Katic was in Milan? –Laura
For the next new episode, “Cool Boys” (airing Nov. 9), Beckett is “out of town at a meeting for a couple of days, at a work-related function,” Alexi Hawley told me. The EP then made clear that she is off doing “real work, not secret work” related to the LokSat mystery.

Ausiello: I’m hearing that a late fall episode — most likely the Nov. 9 installment — will be very Beckett-lite. As in she will, at best, maybe-possibly be in one scene. ABC declined to comment, but my guess is Stana Katic had an “out” in her contract so she could be here.

Question: Is there gonna be a holiday episode of Castle this season? —Barry
Ausiello: As you may have surmised upon reading about Castle (and Nashville) joining the ranks of split-season ABC shows, there will be no holly jolly follies this year. “Unfortunately,” co-showrunner Alexi Hawley told us, “because of the way ABC is platforming us — we do eight episodes and end [Nov. 23], and we’re not on again until the beginning of February — we won’t be on the air for the holidays.”

I hear they’re still in negotiations on that front. As for Beckett in the finale, she’ll be supporting Castle on the case that brings up those traumatic childhood memories, but she’ll also have some stuff to deal with in terms of her career. “Beckett has been looking for something more,” executive producer Terri Miller says. “So she’s presented with those options and she’s going to have to make a decision about what she’s going to do based on those options that come to her.” In other words, while Castle remembers the past, Beckett will have to choose her future.

With the show’s fate still up in the air, TPTB aren’t looking to do anything quite so definitive. “I think that we can say that if we were to come back next year, we would be coming back with all of our pieces intact,” executive producer Andrew Marlowe said. “It’s not a Grey’s Anatomy situation by any means.”

We know Hollander’s Woods is going to come back into play for Castle in the Season 7 finale. However, what mythology might we be dealing with in regards to Beckett? –Rachael
To be clear (since some are CoNfUsEd), the actual Hollander’s Woods incident from Rick’s childhood is one focus for the finale. As series creator Andrew W. Marlowe, who wrote the episode, explains, “One of the areas we haven’t explored is why Castle became a mystery writer. Was there something that created a fascination with murder and with death and with bodies? And Hollander’s Woods was an event that happened when he was a kid that altered who he was…. It has nothing to do with why he vanished, but it does tap into a deeper Castle mythology.” As for the Beckett half of the finale, “We’ve been building this storyline for Beckett where she’s feeling a little bit like she needs to do something more, something a little bit bigger…. Where does she go with family? Where does she go with her career?” Marlowe posits. “So she’ll end up facing some choices in this that are a little bit unexpected, that may change the trajectory of where she’s going.”

Is there any news on the status of Castle Season 8? –Alie
TVLine keeps no secrets, Alie. But even on the off chance the ABC drama doesn’t get picked up, the finale won’t leave folks hanging terribly much. “It was a bit of a challenge to craft a [finale] when there was so much uncertainty about the show’s future, with our [actors] in negotiations, not knowing if we’re coming back and all that sort of stuff,” Marlowe shares. “We were trying to craft a show that had a satisfying conclusion if it is indeed the conclusion, but also some really great, interesting, compelling springboards into next season’s storytelling — if the gods shine upon us and we’re allowed to continue.”

Ausiello: Outside of what showrunner David Amann shared with Inside Line, plus this bit of guest casting, all I can add at this point is that the Season 7 finale finally has a title — and it’s… “Hollander’s Woods,” which of course is a reference to the “password” that Not Henry Jenkins used to earn Rick’s trust after his vanishing. BONUS SCOOP: Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic remain in deep negotiations with ABC on another season and I’m told this one could go down to the proverbial wire.

I revisited this hot topic with showrunner David Amann the other week — asking, At what point do they need to know which way the wind is blowing with regards to re-signing Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic and possibly locking a renewal? – and his response was this: “Obviously, we’re prepared for whatever comes along, and we’ll adjust as necessary. But we’re hopeful that the show will move forward. In the meantime, we’ll just make the best show that we can.”
