Now less than three weeks out from this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, host Jane Lynch on Tuesday was in the mist of pretaping a segment to be featured during Fox’s broadcast of the ceremony. When we expressed our wish for a “sequel” to the rousing, cameo-filled, Jimmy Fallon-led “Born to Run” number that opened the 2010 show, Lynch
had to sadly burst our bubble.
“No, we didn’t try to follow up anything from last year,” she told TVLine during a press call to tout this years Emmycast. OK, so…? “I don’t want to tell you what [I'm pretaping]. It will spoil the surprise.”
What Lynch
did reveal of the particular piece she was in the midst of shooting is A) it was written and directed by Jill Soloway (
United Stated of Tara), and B) it does not feature any of her
Glee cast mates.
However, another, yet-to-be-shot segment likely
will tap into the Fox series’ talented ranks, once Emmy producers hear back on who’s on board.
“I’ve pitched a couple of ideas for the
Glee cast [to be involved],” Lynch shared. “So I bet there’ll be an appearance.”
Save for a delivery of flowers from Fallon, Lynch has not heard nor received tips from any previous Emmy hosts — not that she needs any. An improv queen, featured player in numerous Christopher Guest mockumentaries, and again nominated for an Emmy this year (for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy), she can be quick with the wit on the fly. Her first and foremost goal in overseeing the kudoscast is “to honor television and the people in it,” she says. “But when we get to do little bits of something fun and funny, I feel responsible for those, to keep them entertaining.
“I’d be lying if I didn’t say I want it to be ‘The Best Awards Show Ever,’” she adds with a chuckle. After all, “It’s such a coveted spot [hosting] the biggest evening in television, you want to do it justice.”
As for what viewers
can expect the night of Sunday, Sept. 18, Lynch shared little, if only because details were still being hammered out. She hinted at a “unique” new way to tee up each of the four sections of the program — drama, comedy, reality-TV and movies/miniseries — and confessed that contrary to the stance she took just after landing the gig, “I
will be changing my dress every time I come out.”
So instead, we asked Lynch for three things she definitely will
not do as host. She thought for a moment, then offered: “I probably won’t wear a [Sue Sylvester] tracksuit; I probably won’t do an elaborate dance number; and I won’t bore you.”
And you have to believe her.
