It’s been a while since I’ve written any posts on Hart of Dixie, and there seems to be a lot of interest in the show lately based on the large amount of page views that the Hart of Dixie recaps and spoilers that I’ve posted have been getting. I’ve also wanted to get caught up on watching the show for quite a while anyway, so I figured that I would get back to writing posts on the show. That being said, here are my thoughts on this episode.
All things considered, I really enjoyed this episode. I thought that it had the perfect balance of drama and humor. Bluebell was hit with a major heat wave, and Zoe was having a hard time coping with the hot weather since she never had to go through a heat wave in New York City. Lavon and Wade told that the hot weather tends to make people do crazy things and that she should view the hot weather as a free-pass to do to something crazy. This prompted Wade to accuse Zoe of having wanted to sleep with him ever since she moved to Bluebell without directly saying that.
Zoe was initially adamantly insisting that she would never sleep with Wade, but she soon found herself fantasizing about him as she watched him while he was doing some work outside. After talking to the new receptionist at the practice about how she had never had a one-night stand before, she decided that she wanted to sleep with Wade instead of always being afraid to do anything too wild or take risks and went to the bar and started flirting with him. I have to say that her attempts to flirt with Wade were hilariously awkward.
George was helping two sisters (Polly and Fiona Parker) deal with their mother’s will. Polly was acting very erratic throughout the episode, and Zoe initially thought that she was suffering from depression and that she might need to be put on antidpresents, which Brick thought was ludicrous. However, Zoe ended up running into Polly toward the end of the episode when she was on her way to meet Wade, and Polly punched her before she ran off again. Brick and Zoe went looking for her and ended up finding her lying unconscious on the ground. They were going to take her to their practice in her mother’s car, which they quickly realized was leaking carbon monoxide and that she was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. The carbon monoxide poisoning was what had been causing her to act so erratically, and took her to Zoe and Brick’s practice to be treated.
This leads me to the one minor complaint that I have about this episode. Beyond the part where Polly punched Zoe when she was on her way to meet Wade to have sex with him, that whole subplot seemed unnecessary to me. If the writers wanted to have something happen to distract Zoe from going to hook up with Wade, I’m sure they could have come up with something that didn’t involve adding another subplot to the episode. This episode definitely had quite a few things going on, and this episode could have done without that subplot. Honestly, I had already forgotten about the whole thing with Polly by the point in the episode where Zoe was first going to hook up with Wade. I just found that subplot rather forgettable.
George’s parents came to town, which was completely stressing Lemon out. Lemon spent the episode going out of her way to impress George’s mother. Even though Lemon is my least favorite character on the show at the moment, I have to admit that I definitely felt a little sorry for her as I was watching this episode. George’s mother was downright mean to her and found something to criticize about pretty much everything that Lemon had done in the hopes of impressing her.
Lavon finally asked Didi out on a date, and Lemon immediately became jealous after George told her that he was going to close his office early for the day so Didi could have the day to prepare for their date. Lemon’s jealousy over Lavon and Didi dating came to a head when she saw them on their date at the restaurant that she went to with George, his parents and Brick after George’s mother told her that she and George’s dad had eaten the same duck recipe that Lemon had made the night before. One thing led to another, and Lavon and Didi joined them at their table, which made Lemon act increasingly jealous and she eventually threw a major temper tantrum about George’s mother and Lavon dating Didi.
Toward the end of the episode, Lavon told her that after witnessing her temper tantrum Didi wanted nothing to do with him. He reminded her that things with them are over and she chose to be with George. However, at the end of the episode they ended up kissing just as it started to rain. I know that I’ve said this before, but I hate that Lemon basically wants to be able to have her cake and eat it too as far as George and Lavon are concerned. She says she wants to marry George, but at the same time she doesn’t want anybody to be with Lavon and wants him to herself. I just can’t stand how self-centered Lemon is.
In the end, just as Zoe was arriving at Wade’s place to have sex with him and they were about to kiss, it started pouring rain. She realized that she wasn’t the kind of woman who liked to have one-night stands, so she left Wade’s place. I totally knew before I finished watching this episode the first time that something would happen and she wouldn’t go through with sleeping with him in the end, because that’s just how romances on TV shows work. Writers of TV shows always have to draw things out. I already know how the season ends, but I still can’t wait for Zoe and Wade to get together. I did love how the episode ended with them looking at each other as Wade watched Zoe swim in the pond as a way to cool off.
When it comes to the whole Wade versus George argument about who Zoe should be with, I’m still rooting for Zoe and Wade together. George is a nice guy and on paper he seems like he’s the right guy for Zoe since he’s lawyer and she’s a doctor, while on the surface Wade might seem incompatible with Zoe since he’s a very candid guy who isn’t as educated or refined as she is, but I still think Wade is a better match for Zoe. There are major sparks between them, and I think Wade challenges Zoe in ways that George doesn’t. Rachel Bilson definitely has chemistry with both Scott Porter and Wilson Bethel, but I personally think that Rachel has more chemistry with Wilson than she does with Scott.
Plus, I frequently find myself thinking that George acts like a major wuss who lets people get away with too much. Usually, I think Lemon is the one that he has trouble standing up to, but in this episode I felt like he should have stood up to his mother and confronted her about the way she was treating Lemon a lot sooner than he did. He always lets people get away with way too much before he finally confronts them.
All in all, I really did love this episode. Both Brick and Lemon didn’t annoy me as much as they have so far, which is good, because they have been the main thing that has brought my level of enjoyment of the first three episodes of Hart of Dixie down a little bit. This episode definitely had the perfect balance of drama and lighthearted fun moments. The interactions between Zoe and Wade were definitely the main highlight of the episode for me.
That being said, I give this episode a rating of an A-.
