The Carrie Diaries: Spoilers—When Will We Meet Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda?-TVLine

The Carrie Diaries The CW Charlotte Miranda Samantha

Here's an article by TVLine's Michael Ausiello, which gives some scoop on The CW's upcoming TV series The Carrie Diaries from the showrunner, Amy B. Harris. In the article, Harris reveals that they will eventually introduce Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda on the show. Harris also talks about how the way Carrie is portrayed on The Carrie Diaries will be different from the way Carrie was portrayed on Sex and the City. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some scoop on the differences between the way Carrie will be portrayed on The Carrie Diaries compared to the way she was portrayed on Sex and the City:

Harris and fellow EPs Josh Schwartz and Candace Bushnell fielded several questions about the decision to have Diaries deviate from Sex and the City in several key areas. For instance, Diaries‘ Carrie is considerable younger than SATC‘s Carrie would’ve been in the mid-80s, which is when the show is set.

“I wanted to meet her before she had sex, before she fell in love and before she met Manhattan,” said Harris. “I really wanted to explore that in the first season.”

One area where Diaries won’t stray from the original series: Carrie is somewhat of a basket case — despite the fact that her father (Matt Letscher) is present, accounted for and mostly rad, which is in stark contrast to SATC where Carrie’s father was AWOL (and the cause of so many of her daddy issues). “This Carrie is damaged and afraid and we’re going to see that play out in her first love relationships,” said Harris.

This Carrie also has the fully support of that Carrie, Sarah Jessica Parker. “She sent me a very lovely note kind of giving me her blessing and encouraging me and saying how dear the part was for her,” said Robb. “It meant a lot.”

My thoughts: As a fan of Sex and the City, I have to say that I have very mixed feelings about this show, especially after reading this article. For starters, the fact that the producers have made a lot of changes to Carrie's backstory in order for the character to fit with their vision for the show has me very worried that the way Carrie is going to be portrayed on The Carrie Diaries will make her seem like a completely different character compared to the way Carrie was on Sex and the City. I know that Carrie is supposed to only be a teenager at the start of the show and that in real life people can radically change from the way they are as a teenager compared to way they act as an adult, so it makes sense that Carrie won't be exactly the way she was as an adult. I just hope that the writers will at least show glimpses of the way Carrie was on Sex and the City.

I also have mixed feelings about them eventually introducing Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, because there were times I liked them more than I liked Carrie on Sex and the City, so a part me definitely wants to see them be introduced eventually. However, I don't like the idea of the producers completely revising all the history and backstory behind how Carrie meets Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda that was established in Sex and the City simply to have it fit the producers' vision for The Carrie Diaries.

Given the fact that Sarah Jessica Parker is apparently very supportive of the show and the way Carrie will be portrayed, I'm going to try my best to keep an open mind, give the show a chance and wait until I see the first episode or two before I make any concrete judgements about the show. Another concern that I have about the show is its' ability to capture a big enough audience for The Carrie Diaries' ratings to be high enough to stay on the air. After all, this is a prequel TV series to a show with an audience that consisted primarily of adults due to the fact that the content on Sex and the City was very adult and racy at times, especially since it aired on HBO. I honestly don't see a lot of fans of Sex and the City feeling compelled to watch this. Perhaps I'm being narrow-minded, but I also don't see a lot of adults in general wanting to watch this since it's yet another teen drama that The CW has created. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but right now I'm half expecting this show to be DOA.
