According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, James Tupper has been made a series regular for the upcoming fourth season of Revenge. Here's an excerpt from the article:
Tupper has recurred throughout Revenge‘s three-year run, but his appearances have been confined to flashbacks (on account of his alter ego being dead and all). David’s surprising resurrection in the final moments of Season 3 — and his now-confirmed return in Season 4 — sets the stage for killer reunions with daughter Emily and ex-love Victoria.
“Victoria and Emily are both going to have to reckon with what they’ve done in his name over the last 20 years, and then they’ll have to reckon with, “Well, who is this man?” show runner Sunil Nayar recently teased to TVLine. “It’s fun because, for the first time, the audience knows something that none of the people on the show do. The audience knows what he did to Conrad, they know what a raw act of vengeance it was. So the David that’s eventually going to come back to town isn’t going to be the David that the people in the Hamptons know, but the viewers have seen him and know what he’s capable of. That’s a fun dynamic we’ve never gotten to play with before.”

My thoughts: Let me start by saying that for the record, the only season three episodes that I've seen at this point are the season three premiere and the episode "Exodus". Back when season two was airing, I fell behind on watching Revenge at one point in the season, and I didn't get around to getting caught up on watching the show until the summer. When I finally got back to watching the rest of the second season, I found myself feeling like watching the show had become a major chore for me, so I decided to not watch Revenge any more when season three started.
Despite not watching the show when season three started, I found myself being interested in seeing who shot Emily, so I decided to watch the episode "Exodus" on Hulu after it aired. It wasn't until today that I finally watched the season three premiere since I had downloaded on iTunes for free months ago though. Having watched those two episodes, I'll admit that I do think that season three appears to be a significant improvement over Revenge's second season, and I'm even considering watching the show again when season four starts. However, I do think that Revenge is still a mere shadow of its formal self despite being better than season two was, and as far as I'm concerned, season one is the best season of Revenge.
If you ask me, the whole thing about David Clarke being alive all along really shows just how much the overall quality of the show has declined. Personally, I think that the show would have been better off if the writers had done the show without having David end up being alive at any point in the series. I just think it makes David look like a horrible father and a character that I'm not sure that I can ever root for. I say this because Emily's life took such a horrible turn after they had been separated from each other and she was led to believe that her father was dead. If they had been reunited with each other at some point when Emily was still young, then I might not think this makes David look like such a horrible person. Although, if that were the case, there would be no show to begin with. That being said, I'll try my best to reserve judgment regarding the decision to have David Clarke show up alive and by extension the decision to make James Tupper a series regular next season until after season four starts and I see what the writers do with it.
