The Bourbon Kings: Oh, my! This book sure is one giant soap opera (My thoughts on book #1 in the Bourbon Kings book series by J.R. Ward)

http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1414595442l/23355896.jpg

Let me start out by saying that originally I was planning to wait a while to read and review The Bourbon Kings. However, I decided to go ahead and read it now because I’ve wanted to read it for months, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how excited I was to read The Bourbon Kings. Right off the bat, I have to say that I absolutely loved this book. That being said, I’m just going to come right out and say that while I loved this book, there’s no denying that it also has a lot of problems, which I’ll get to later.

The main thing that I love about this book is the fact that it’s basically a soap opera in the form of a book. I’m a huge fan of soap operas, and I typically love just about anything that has a soap opera vibe to it. As soon as I read the plot description of the book that’s on jacket of book the first time that I saw The Bourbon Kings at Barnes & Noble, I immediately thought that the book sounded a lot like a soap opera, and most of the reviews for the book on Amazon also compared the book to Dallas and Dynasty. Reading so many reviews that compared the book to soap operas was definitely the thing that drew me to The Bourbon Kings the most. One thing that really helps this book to feel like a soap opera is fact that the story has a big ensemble of characters and a variety of storylines that the characters are involved in. While The Bourbon Kings is definitely an ensemble piece, at the end of the day, it’s very much Lane’s story. He’s definitely the character that gets the most focus and development throughout the book. I should probably also mention that technically Lane’s name is Tulane. Yeah, I would definitely go by the name Lane, too. Tulane sounds like an extremely ridiculous name that would most likely cause the bullies at school to tease anybody with that name every day of their life and maybe even beat them up, too.

The Bourbon Kings’ ensemble nature is one of the things that really helped the book to feel like a soap opera. However, it also definitely leads to one of this book’s biggest problems, which is that it was often times kind of challenging to keep track of all the characters and subplots in book. You almost need to make a very complicated chart to keep track of all the one trillion characters in this book, the numerous subplots and which characters are involved in each of the subplots. While the book doesn’t actually have a trillion characters in it, this book does have a lot of characters to keep track of, and unfortunately too many of the characters were woefully neglected and left underdeveloped, if you ask me.

Revenge: Scoop on the series finale (Episode 4x23 "Two Graves") from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Revenge from this week's (Posted on 5/7/15) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Can we expect to see any more surprise return characters in the Revenge series finale? — Carter
Ausiello:
I’m not sure if this qualifies as a “surprise,” Carter, but you haven’t seen the last of Charlotte! Amanda’s half-sister will make another appearance in the final episode, and it sounds like she’ll play a key role in the unfolding drama. “She delivers a huge piece of information near the end of the episode,” showrunner Sunil Nayar teases. “I can guarantee it will generate conversation.”

Revenge: Scoop on the series finale (Episode 4x23 "Two Graves") from Entertainment Weekly's Natalie Abrams

http://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/zp/M4L1QxeiJGZl.jpg

Here's some scoop on Revenge from Entertainment Weekly's Natalie Abrams' The Spoiler Room column, which was posted on 5/1/15.

Straight up: Is Emily Thorne going to die on Revenge? — Mark
Well, the series finale is titled “Two Graves,” so her survival odds are not looking great at the moment. “It is the end of a journey, but it’s a journey that’s been so darkly taken,” EP Sunil Nayar tells me. “How do we want her to feel at the end of this journey, and how do we want the audience to feel about the nature of this journey? Do we want this to be a tale where people think, ‘I should go do that,’ or do we want people to think, ‘I could go do that, but there’s a serious price to be paid by doing it!’? At the end of the day, there’s no getting out of this clean, whether that means you’re dead, deeply wounded or carrying this darkness with you. You’ll see that everybody in the show is affected by the world they’ve gotten themselves into and the darkness that’s hard to pull out.”

Revenge: Scoop on the possibility of Christa B. Allen returning to the show from E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos

http://gossipandgab.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/image46.jpg

Here's some scoop on Revenge from Kristin Dos Santos' Spoiler Chat column, which was posted on 4/21/15.

Jeaneen: Cannot believe Victoria Grayson is dead on Revenge! Will Charlotte come back to the Hamptons after she finds out?
Christa B. Allen will definitely be returning, but won't be sharing any scenes with Madeleine Stowe, even in flashbacks. "I unfortunately didn't get to work with Christa," Stowe tells us. But when asked if we could possibly be seeing any other returns before season's end, Stowe teases, "There will be surprises, for sure."

Revenge: Scoop on the future of the show and more from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2014/WRN/120814-revenge-594.jpg

Here's some scoop on Revenge from this week's (Posted on 4/14/15) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Any word on what’s happening with Revenge? The last few episodes have all felt very series-finale leaning. Will it be renewed or cancelled? And if we do get a Season 5, is there a major revamp in store? —Sean
Ausiello: Based on what I’m hearing about the finale, there would have to be a major revamp if the show returns for a fifth season. Actually, forget revamp — there’d have to be a whole new show.
Question: Ever since Emily VanCamp tweeted that picture of herself with Tom Amandes, I’ve been freaking out over the impending Everwood reunion. What do you know? — Tim
Ausiello:
Oh, we know quite a bit, Tim, including that the circumstances of their meeting might not be as clear-cut as they seemed in VanCamp’s tweet. “I know that it appears Amanda Clarke is in prison garb in a courtroom, but in regards to this show, it really means nothing,” Revenge showrunner Sunil Nayar advises. “It could mean she’s been arrested, or it could mean she’s undercover, or it could mean she’s pulling a play on someone.” All right, Tim, take your pick!

Here's some scoop on Revenge from this week's (Posted on 4/10/15) Matt's Inside Line column.

I was wondering if I could get any insight on Revenge as we approach the season (or possibly series) finale. (The season finale has been named “Two Graves”!) –Sabrina
It certainly sounds ominous, doesn’t it? “We’ve only ever done one-word episode titles since the show began,” showrunner Sunil Nayar reminds, “and the show began with this quote Mike [Kelley] had chosen from Confucius: ‘Before embarking on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.’ We wanted … to tell people that there is an element to this journey that will be over [in the finale]. You just have no idea for whom those graves are dug, or who will end up in them.”

Here's some scoop on Revenge from this week's (Posted on 3/10/15) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Revenge is on fire this season! Do you have any scoop? —Julius
Ausiello: I don’t think you realize how perfect your question is, Julius. Episode 20, appropriately titled “Aftermath,” deals with the fallout from a devastating fire at a yet-unknown Hamptons residence. What I do know, however, is that both Emily and David will try to enter the home looking for answers — and they’ll both be turned away by the authorities.

Revenge: Nolan related scoop from TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich

http://static2.hypable.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/revenge-season-4-episode-8-nolan-martini.jpg?dc6d31

Here's some scoop on Revenge from this week's (Posted on 1/15/15) Matt's Inside Line column.

Ratings be damned, I’m loving Revenge more than ever. Have anything for the faitfhul fans? –Deb
“There’s something hugely big for Nolan that we’re literally on the precipice of,” Gabriel Mann reveals. “I think it changes the course of Season 4 for him.” Mann hints that it might have something to do with a certain new houseguest, as his character is “going to delve into Louise’s world and see all the baggage she brings with her.” As for Nolan’s love life (or lack thereof) this season, Mann hints at a major turn of the tide: “This season, I thought Nolan needed to take a little bit of a break … but [his love life] is not going to be dry for a whole lot longer.”

Revenge: Ben related scoop from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Revenge from this week's (Posted on 1/13/15) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Any Revenge scoop? — Neil
Ausiello:
Brace yourself, Neil… As Revenge showrunner Sunil Nayar revealed to TVLine last month, Ben’s ex-wife will soon be making an appearance in the Hamptons — and now, I’ve got more scoop: Her name is April, and she’s currently working as a waitress at a diner. Described as “pretty-but-scrappy,” she’s become quite independent since splitting from her ex. But the question remains: How will she re-enter Ben’s life?
