According to TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, SyFy has renewed both Defiance and Dominion for a third and second season respectively. Both renewals are for 13 episodes, which are currently schedule to air in 2015. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some information on the ratings for both shows:
Defiance opened Season 2 with 2 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating (per the fine folks at TVByTheNumbers), slipping to 1.5 mil/0.4 come finale time.
Dominion debuted in June to 2 mil/0.6, drawing 1.5 mil/0.5 with its Aug. 8 finale.

My thoughts: I'm a huge fan of Defiance, so I'm beyond thrilled that it has been renewed for a third season. Honestly, I was starting to get a little worried about the show's future when season 2 had finished airing, and SyFy still hadn't announced a season 3 renewal for the show. The fact that the season 2 finale aired August 28th really started to make me think that the show might be canceled since it's almost October. I really am happy to know now that's not the case though. As for Dominion, I never got around to watching it because the ratings for the show's first season never looked that great to me, so I didn't think that there was any point in getting into the show, only for it to be canceled. Now that it has been renewed a second season, I'm definitely going to check it out.
