When Vampire Diaries returns, Ian Somerhalder will be behind the camera, and as the director explains, fans can expect a big explosion … literally. “This car blew up and I was 200 feet away and I could still feel the heat and the percussion from this thing,” Somerhalder says. But according to him, the experience will be a bit different for viewers. “The audience isn’t going to get the blast that I felt. What they’re going to feel is real heartbreak for why that explosion happened.” Could another death be headed our way?

Ausiello: Let’s just say you’re not crazy for seeing a strong connection between Bonnie and Damon, Renee. Despite Elena expressing a “glimmer” of hope for a romantic reunion, Damon is still focused on the mission at hand: Bring back Bonnie. And Ian Somerhalder, for one, wouldn’t be surprised if things turn spicy once the Bennett witch returns. “There’s an extraordinarily thin line between love and hate,” Somerhalder notes. “Due to the fact that these two hated each other, and had so many connections … it only seemed appropriate that they would be given a chance, due to the dynamics of their relationship.”

Question: Do you have anything on my favorite Vampire Diaries character, Tyler? —Jeanette
Ausiello:  What a coincidence, Jeanette, Tyler is one of Andy Swift’s favorite TVD characters, too! (Definitely in the Top 20, at least.) Anyway, Michael Trevino says Liv’s current dilemma will take up most of Tyler’s time. “He’s there for Liv and wants to protect her and make sure she’s not getting into trouble,” Trevino says. “She’s being so tough and a little bitchy at times towards him. He’s not used to that, so I like that Tyler’s having to deal with that this season. But we will see their relationship become stronger. He’s really smitten with that girl.”

Did you watch our interview with Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev? As for how Damon will feel when he finds out that Elena's memory has been erased, it's not pretty. "He'll be pretty pissed at [Alaric] ... and can't imagine for the life of him why his best friend would do this," Somerhalder says. Fortunately, Damon's reunion with Stefan will go better — and snap Stefan out of his funk. "He's going through his dark phase, but he comes around," Paul Wesley says. "They're going to hug it out."

Fret not, you will see share Paul and Ian share scenes together…in flashbacks! "There are flashbacks coming up," executive producer Caroline Dries spilled, but choosing not to reveal which year just yet. "But we will see an era we haven't seen before in flashbacks and it will help tie together a bunch of storylines." You can expect to see the Damon and Stefan-centric flashbacks in episode four.

Veronica: I just have one question when it comes to TVD: Enzo!?!?!
Sadly, the premiere is Enzo-less. But don't worry, as he is in episode two and will have major plans when it comes to his BFF Damon, whose death "took a toll on" him, Dries previewed. Aside from the Damon of it all, fans can expect to see more flirty banter between Enzo and Caroline. "We'll continue to have that dynamic between the two," Dries said, before revealing one person Enzo won't be able to charm: Matt Donovan. "They will not be the best of friends," she teased.

How about some information on this season’s villain? When my colleague Samantha Highfill spoke to Julie Plec about a new big bad, she claimed this season was going to have a number of “conflict providers.” Still, “There is a villain-esque person in this season that I’m particularly excited about because it does break the mold a little bit of our villains, which seem to be often very redeemable in their own way,” she says. “And we get to explore the deep, dark minds of a psychopathic personality, so I’m very excited about that.” In other words, this is one bad guy who won’t find redemption through a spin-off.

Until the duo is reunited  — which doesn't seem likely to happen for a while — there isn't much to tease on that front. On the other hand, the tension between Caroline and Stefan will come to a head early on when our favorite blonde finally confronts him about her feelings  — and Elena overhears the whole thing! Even though Nina Dobrev told us Elena would be all "awko-taco" about a Stefan-Caroline pairing, you'll still be surprised by her reaction.

Since Mystic Falls is still being cloaked by the Travelers’ spell that will kill any vampire who steps foot in town, probably not anytime soon. However, Damon could actually come face-to-face with someone in the land of the living fairly quickly. (And no, that’s not counting Elena using some witchy drug to hallucinate him.) Ian Somerhalder teased that brother bonding isn’t far off. “I had some really great scenes with Paul [Wesley] not too long ago, like last week,” he says. “You definitely see some great stuff with those boys. It’s good when they’re not at one another’s throats.” So unless Stefan joins Elena’s drug trip, it sounds like we could have a Salvatore reunion within the first batch of episodes.
