Community Preview--Season 3 Episode 6, Advanced Gay-TVLine

This Thursday’s episode of Community (NBC, 8/7c) is called “Advanced Gay,” and though amusingly titled, it doesn’t really reveal much at all about the plot.

With our interest sufficiently piqued, we sought out Joel McHale, hoping that Jeff’s portrayer could shed some light on this latest installment. His response? “‘Advanced Gay’ is incredible… so great. The funny thing is, the name sounds like the name of a class the group is taking and, in a way, it is a class.”

And… that was all he would say. But just when we thought he’d given up all there was to give, McHale concluded his insights with this scoopy gem: “OK, [the episode] is basically about the group discovering that the gay community loves Hawthorne Wipes.” Jackpot!

Now here are a few more scooplets you should know about the jam-packed ep:

As TVLine first reported, Deadwood’s Larry Cedar will play Pierce’s presumed-dead father, Cornelius Hawthorne. (Fun fact: Cedar is actually 12 years younger than Chevy Chase.) Corny, as we at TVLine have dubbed him, is racist and offensive — kind of like his son, but worse.

• RuPaul’s Drag Race fan fave Shangela guest-stars as a drag queen who devoted an entire dance track to her love of Hawthorne Wipes.

Community Scoop: 3rd Rock’s French Stewart Cast as… French Stewart?!

Jerry Minor (Saturday Night Live) returns as Greendale’s ever-present janitor and once again attempts to lure Troy into a life of plumbing.

John Goodman (finally!) puts in another appearance, as Vice Dean Laybourne courts Troy to study the art of air conditioning.

Community's John Goodman Has Dean Pelton's 'Privates In a Vice'! Will Jeff Defend His Foe?-TVLine

You’ve no doubt read here about the showdown looming in Season 3 of NBC’s Community, between Dean Pelton (played by Jim Rash) and Vice Dean Laybourne, the imperious head of Greendale’s apparently renowned air conditioning repair school. But perhaps no one sums up the gents’ adversarial dynamic better than incoming guest star John Goodman himself.

“He’s got [the dean's] privates in a vice,” Goodman shared during a Wednesday conference call. “Dean Pelton was feeling his oats, and now he’s having his oats fed to him.”

If Laybourne — whom Goodman touts as “an unseen, unknown force” — starts bearing down too hard on Pelton, might the chrome-domed, freshly goateed dean find himself backed up by the unluckiest of allies, in Jeff Winger?

“That’s a good question, because Jeff is always pretty wigged out by Dean Pelton,” Joel McHale told us. “In every scene, if you watch, the Dean finds a way to touch Jeff…. But my guess is that at some point he will be forced to help the dean.”

“I haven’t seen that yet in the scripts,” McHale points out, “because all of the stuff John has been doing thus far is setting up the Darth Vader-like empire that is the air conditioning repair school. My guess is it’s going to get really hairy in a couple episodes.”

The light at the end of the tunnel for Dean Pelton: Goodman says that at this point he is locked in for only six episodes of the NBC comedy — “unless they can get rid of me more cheaply!”

Community goes back to school Thursday, Sept. 22, at 8/7c.
