(“Fun” fact: Some of said death comes out a brawl so brutal and extended that when the 911 dispatcher asks the nature of the emergency, the caller can only admit, “I don’t know where to start….”)

Ausiello: I’d put the odds at 50-50 — he’ll either survive, or he won’t. (That is how odds work, yes?) As for scoop we actually can share, Episode 3 will feature a face-off six seasons in the making, when interim Chief Deputy Rachel Brooks doesn’t mince words when leaning on CI Ava for intel. “Joelle [Carter] and I haven’t worked together at all in the six seasons, so that was a really special day for me, to have Rachel and Ava come face to face,” Erica Tazel shares.

I’m now three episodes in, and just got done watching a very entertaining verbal volley between Raylan and Boyd, one of whom totally has the other’s number. Thus far, it looks to be the lean, mean final season that I wished for, laser-focused on the two fellas and Ava, who’s desperately caught in the middle (but isn’t afraid to suck down lotsa bourbon in the name of self-preservation). Of the guest stars, Garrett Dillahunt is sufficiently menacing (and not in an OTT, affected way, like some past villains), while I can’t wait to see more of Sam Elliott’s character.

Although the audience knows Ava appears to be working with Raylan to bring down Boyd, how long will it take Boyd to figure it out? Perhaps longer than usual. "Love is a complicated thing and it allows you to see things sometimes that you shouldn't and not see some things that you should," Walton Goggins says. However, both Raylan and Ava might want to think twice about crossing Boyd. "He's like the Bush administration right after 9/11: Either you're with me or you're against me," Goggins says. "This is the heavyweight round, and at the end of it there's going to be one man standing."

I asked series boss Graham Yost to confirm why Raylan didn’t pay his baby momma a visit while in Florida — even with everyone urging him to! — and he explained, “I think he’s afraid, and he doesn’t know why he’s afraid. And that’s something we’ll get into over the season, as much as Raylan’s willing to get into anything like that. But the simple answer is: Look at who his father was. That brings up a lot of concerns about what kind of father you will be.” As for whether we’ll see Winona and child again this season, Yost said that is TBD. “The plan was yes, but plans change.”

Boyd is pretty lonely this season. Ava's in jail and most of his former allies are gone. Couple that with the unexpected trickiness of running his new heroin empire, and you have a Boyd on the edge. "He's just barely treading water," Walton Goggins says. "He's kind of a dog wagging his tail; he's just chasing it around and around. It's a very dangerous place for a person like Boyd to be." That will become even truer when he learns that someone very close to him has betrayed him.

I’ll also say that Dewey Crowe fans (and I know there are many) are in for a treat – he seems to have a fun (meaning comically woeful) storyline ahead.

ADAM: The Season 5 premiere is a very bloody affair, especially when Boyd and his new partner Wynn Duffy have to make a trip to Detroit to settle a beef about a drug shipment gone wrong. On a lighter note, Raylan's living arrangements get a serious upgrade (bye-bye, barroom) and he and Winona share a very nice moment. But Raylan's happiness might be fleeting, especially when Art begins digging into exactly how Nicky Augustine met his demise last season.

‘JUSTIFIED’ SEASON: THE CROWES SWOOP IN

Justified fans, you’ve probably heard the news, but in case you haven’t: THE PREMIERE DATE HAS LANDED! But as you mark Jan. 7 on your calendars, allow me to tell you more about the season. Rather, let executive producer Graham Yost:

“The big thing would be Dewey Crowe, our beloved Dewey, who we didn’t even see last year — it’s a big season for him,” Yost says. “It’s also his family — these Crowes from Florida come up and cause a lot of problems for Raylan and Boyd.” And yes, says Yost, they are this season’s big bad. (Michael Rapaport, who is playing Daryl Crowe, Jr., Alicia Witt, and Amy Smart are among the guest cast we’ll see.)

As for Raylan, the season picks up a few months after last season’s finale — so, yes, the baby has arrived! “That has a profound effect on him,” teases Yost. “So what does he want to do going forward? And the baby is not in Kentucky. So what is he going to do? And that’s one of the big questions of the season.”

The other? Can Boyd get Ava out of the pokey! “As much as we don’t want to repeat anything done by Orange Is the New Black or…Sons, we do have a woman in prison. So we have stories about that. That’s going to be her big story this season.”
