Now that season seven is over, I figured that I would write an overview or a “report card” of my thoughts on the season as a whole, reflecting on both each of the episodes as well as my favorite episodes for each of the characters individually. That being said, here’s a brief summary of what I thought of each of the episodes.
Since my overview ended up being so long, I've broken it into four separate posts, so I've included links to the other three posts at the bottom of this post.
As I look back on season seven as a whole, I have to say that I personally think that with the exception of episode 7x05 “Frank’s Brother”, which I personally think is the worst episode ever of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, every other episode of season seven was great for the most part. Anyway, here’s a brief summary of what I thought about each episode.
7x01 (Frank’s Pretty Woman)
I thought that this episode was a great way to start off the season. It was great getting to see the return of Charlie’s alter ego Hoss Bonaventure, and I loved Charlie and Frank’s scenes together in this episode. Just like I always have. I also loved how Dee suddenly decided that she wanted to become a “Foot Girl” like Roxy after she saw how much money Roxy made doing that. That reminded me a lot of how Dee very randomly declared that she was a high school drama teacher last season in “Dee Reynolds: Shaping America’s Youth”, which is my favorite episode from season six. This episode also marked the beginning of Dennis slowly becoming one of my top favorite characters right along with Dee and Charlie. My only problem with episode was the fact that they didn’t really address how Mac ended up getting fat other than Mac saying that he wasn’t fat, instead he insisted that he was simply “cultivating mass”, but at least they devoted a whole episode to explaining how Mac got father later on in the season. I found that kind of hard to believe coming from Mac since he’s always claimed to be very athletic, even though he doesn’t seem to actually have very much athletic ability.
My rating: A-

7x02 (The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore)
I thought that was a pretty good episode for the most part, but I don’t think that this was the best episode ever. The best part of this episode for me was Charlie. Every scene he was in was awesome. I especially enjoyed Charlie’s scenes with The Waitress. I also loved Dee and Dennis’ desperate desire to belief that the Jersey Shore was as great as they remembered it. The scenes with Mac and Frank on the inflatable raft were priceless, especially when Frank started talking about how he would be willing to kill and eat Mac if he had to in order to survive. That was classic Frank. My only problem with this episode is that I felt like after Dee and Dennis went with the girl that they encountered at the hospital and her friends, the rest of the episode fell flat for the most part. I think that if they had actually shown some of the dialogue that Dee and Dennis had with the girl and her friends and some of the dialogue that Mac and Frank had with the people on the cruise ship that rescued them, I might have liked the episode just a little bit more. I was fine with what they showed with Charlie and The Waitress during the montage, because I felt like they included enough dialogue between Charlie and The Waitress before and after the montage for me to get the general gist of what happened with them. One last thing that I liked about this episode was the fact that out of everyone in The Gang, Charlie is the one who the best time on their trip and perhaps the most normal experience on the trip and he was drinking bottles of sunscreen for most of the episode.
My rating: B+

7x03 (Frank Reynolds’ Little Beauties)
Before the season started, this episode was definitely the one that that I was the most excited to see, and this episode didn’t disappoint me at all. This episode is definitely one of my favorite episodes of season seven. I loved the scene where Charlie was trying to teach the kids how to do the pageantry walk. That scene is probably my favorite scene of the episode. I personally thought that Dee trying to form alliances with various girls competing in the pageant and the guys taking the boy who was competing in the pageant under their wing was all hilarious. The techno version of Yankee Doodle that the boy did for the pageant was downright priceless. I also love how Frank looked spent the entire episode looking like an absolute mess after he fell down and was frantically trying to prove that he wasn’t a “kid diddler”. Plus, I loved the twist at the end of the episode with the guy who was claiming to be a part of an organization that tried to make sure everything that took place at pageants was ethical.
My rating: A+

7x04 (Sweet Dee Gets Audited)
This episode is definitely another one of my top favorite episodes from season seven, partly because it was centered around Dee in a lot of ways, and she’s always been my top favorite character on the show. Although, I’ve found that trying to pick just one of the characters on the show is probably a lot like a parent trying to pick one of their kids as their favorite. It’s possible to do that, which is why I’ve always ranked the characters based on how much they can make me laugh just by thinking about them. This episode definitely marked the beginning of Dennis joining Dee and Charlie as being able to make me laugh hysterically just by thinking about him. I love how they brought back the whole thing about Dee being a surrogate for Carmen and her husband and the way they ultimately tied Dee’s storyline in this episode together with the whole storyline with Charlie, Mac, Dennis and Frank trying to be more democratic in their decision making process for the bar at the end of the episode.
My rating: A+

7x05 (Frank’s Brother)
This episode was definitely the worst episode ever of the show in my opinion, because it was the first episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia that didn’t make me laugh once as I was watch this episode. For me, the main problem with this episode was that it featured very little screen time for Dee, Charlie, Mac and Dennis. It was basically just Frank and his brother, Gino, who we’ve never scene before telling the story of how they both fell in love with the same woman, Shadynasty, with the rest of The Gang occasionally interrupting them as they told their story. If the writers wanted to do an episode where they introduced Frank’s brother, I think it could have been a lot better if the writers had done a storyline with Frank and Gino that also incorporated Dee, Charlie, Dennis and Mac a lot more than this episode did.
My rating: D-

7x06 (The Storm of the Century)
I have to say that I absolutely loved this episode, and I thought that it was a great way to recover from the epic disaster of an episode that was “Frank’s Brother”. For me, Dennis and Glenn Howerton’s performance in this episode were definitely the best things about this episode. Dennis has always come off as a bit of a sociopath to me, but as I was watching the show this season and especially this episode has really given me the impression that both the writers for the show and Glenn Howerton decided to just have Dennis go full-on sociopath in terms of how he played the role this season. I supposed Glenn played a role in the decision of how they should write the character Dennis this season since he’s also one of the writers for the show. I loved Dennis, Mac and Charlie’s obsession with the news reporter, Jackie Denardo’s, breasts, as well as Charlie’s obsession with getting pickled eggs. Dee and Frank’s scenes with Rickety Cricket were great too, and I love how the episode just ended in chaos with everyone in the bulk store running around the store in a panic after Cricket drove Dee’s car into the store.
My rating: A+
