I don’t know about everybody else, but I thought that between the
aftermath of Mel and Joe sleeping together and then Austin showing up
towards the end of tonight’s episode of Melissa & Joey right as Joe
was getting home so he could talk to Mel about them pursuing a romantic
relationship and the reappearance of Emma’s mother on Baby Daddy, the
summer finales of Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy were unusually
dramatic for both shows.
When it comes to Austin showing up and telling Mel that he wants to have a family with her at the end of tonight’s episode of Melissa & Joey, I didn’t see that coming at all. I love Trevor Donovan, but I really hate that he/Austin showed up at the end of the episode. I’m not sure that I can buy Austin’s sudden change of heart about being willing to get his vasectomy reversed so he and Mel can have kids of their own. If he was so sure at such a young age that he never wanted to have kids that he would go as far as to get a vasectomy, I don’t think he would be so quick to change his mind about that. I guess the writers have to create drama between Mel and Joe somehow. Hopefully, Mel will ultimately tell Austin that she doesn’t think that they should get back together and Mel and Joe will pursue a relationship with each other when the show returns for the second half of the season.
The drama in tonight’s episode of Baby Daddy was much more predictable, if you ask me. As soon as Bonnie agreed to show Angela a picture of Emma, I knew that Angela would end up saying that she wants Emma back. That drama seems extremely forced though. Given the fact that the show is called “Baby Daddy”, I’m thinking that Angela will ultimately decide to not take Emma away from Ben. I hope Angela doesn’t try to sue Ben for custody, because that would just be too much drama for the show when it’s supposed to be a comedy.
Personally, I don’t think any judge in their right mind would grant custody of Emma to Angela given the fact that she had already abandoned Emma once and was planning to give her up for adoption when she left Emma on Ben’s doorstep in the pilot. The best case scenario would be that Angela will once again think about what she said earlier in the episode about her life being a mess and go away for good, realizing that she’s not fit to raise Emma on her own. The worst case scenario would be that Ben and Angela will agree to share joint custody and co-parent Emma together.
Once again Danny showed what a standup guy he is in this episode, first in the video of Riley’s 16th birthday party where he tried thwart all of the pranks that Ben was playing on Riley. He once again showed what a great guy he is when he stepped aside and let Ben try to make another move on Riley. I really don’t want Riley and Ben to get together though. After all, Danny has always been in love with Riley, even when she was overweight, while Ben’s interest in Riley is only recent now that she has lost all of the weight. At least Danny and his therapist girlfriend broke up, but I don’t know what he’s going to do about having both Riley’s name and his ex-girlfriend’s name tattooed to his wrists.
All in all, while I really liked tonight’s episodes of Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy, I’m not sure I like the dramatic turn both shows took for their summer finale. The drama between Mel and Joe is pretty interesting and I think it does fit the show. However, having the summer finale of Baby Daddy be so dramatic felt really out of character for the show, and it just didn’t completely work for me.
