Melissa & Joey: Scoop from E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos

Here's some scoop on Melissa & Joey from Kristin Dos Santos' Spoiler Chat column, which was posted on 2/7/14.

Stefanie: I never thought my two favorite 90s stars would come together and make one of my guilty pleasure comedies, Melissa and Joey. Got anything to make my day?
How about a pregnancy twist? Whose? Not telling!

Is it just me or were the summer finales of Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy unusually dramatic? (My thoughts on Melissa & Joey-Episode 3x15 "What Happens in Jersey... (Part 2)" and Baby Daddy-Episode 2x15 "Surprise!")

I don’t know about everybody else, but I thought that between the aftermath of Mel and Joe sleeping together and then Austin showing up towards the end of tonight’s episode of Melissa & Joey right as Joe was getting home so he could talk to Mel about them pursuing a romantic relationship and the reappearance of Emma’s mother on Baby Daddy, the summer finales of Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy were unusually dramatic  for both shows.

When it comes to Austin showing up and telling Mel that he wants to have a family with her at the end of tonight’s episode of Melissa & Joey, I didn’t see that coming at all. I love Trevor Donovan, but I really hate that he/Austin showed up at the end of the episode. I’m not sure that I can buy Austin’s sudden change of heart about being willing to get his vasectomy reversed so he and Mel can have kids of their own. If he was so sure at such a young age that he never wanted to have kids that he would go as far as to get a vasectomy, I don’t think he would be so quick to change his mind about that. I guess the writers have to create drama between Mel and Joe somehow. Hopefully, Mel will ultimately tell Austin that she doesn’t think that they should get back together and Mel and Joe will pursue a relationship with each other when the show returns for the second half of the season.

The drama in tonight’s episode of Baby Daddy was much more predictable, if you ask me. As soon as Bonnie agreed to show Angela a picture of Emma, I knew that Angela would end up saying that she wants Emma back. That drama seems extremely forced though. Given the fact that the show is called “Baby Daddy”, I’m thinking that Angela will ultimately decide to not take Emma away from Ben. I hope Angela doesn’t try to sue Ben for custody, because that would just be too much drama for the show when it’s supposed to be a comedy.

Personally, I don’t think any judge in their right mind would grant custody of Emma to Angela given the fact that she had already abandoned Emma once and was planning to give her up for adoption when she left Emma on Ben’s doorstep in the pilot. The best case scenario would be that Angela will once again think about what she said earlier in the episode about her life being a mess and go away for good, realizing that she’s not fit to raise Emma on her own. The worst case scenario would be that Ben and Angela will agree to share joint custody and co-parent Emma together.

Once again Danny showed what a standup guy he is in this episode, first in the video of Riley’s 16th birthday party where he tried thwart all of the pranks that Ben was playing on Riley. He once again showed what a great guy he is when he stepped aside and let Ben try to make another move on Riley. I really don’t want Riley and Ben to get together though. After all, Danny has always been in love with Riley, even when she was overweight, while Ben’s interest in Riley is only recent now that she has lost all of the weight. At least Danny and his therapist girlfriend broke up, but I don’t know what he’s going to do about having both Riley’s name and his ex-girlfriend’s name tattooed to his wrists.

All in all, while I really liked tonight’s episodes of Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy, I’m not sure I like the dramatic turn both shows took for their summer finale. The drama between Mel and Joe is pretty interesting and I think it does fit the show. However, having the summer finale of Baby Daddy be so dramatic felt really out of character for the show, and it just didn’t completely work for me.

Melissa & Joey: Oh, no! Is Joey quitting his job? (My thoughts on episode 3x01 “Works for Me”)

Now that summer has begun and pretty much all of the shows that I watch on network television have either ended for the season, or they are about to end for the season, I’ll be blogging about TV shows that air on cable. I also hope to write a review of Dallas’ (TNT series) second season, a review of the first season of Revolution and get started on my project of reviewing all five seasons of 90210. Although, I’ll be moving into a house in a few weeks and the whole moving process might not leave me with very much time to actually work on those projects. I’m going to try my absolute best to get them done over the summer though, or in the case of my 90210 project, at least get started, but I digress. Melissa & Joey is one of my favorite shows to watch during the summer, so I might try to review at least some of the episodes this summer.

With that said, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the season three premiere. It mostly revolved around the fact that Joe was feeling like Ryder and Lennox no longer needed him since they’ve grown up so much, which led to him trying to get a job in finance since that’s what he did for a living before he worked for Mel. Joe was offered a job by a guy who works in finance, so he initially believed that the job was working in finance; however it turned out that he wanted to hire Joe to be their baby’s nanny. Apparently, they were willing to pay Joe a lot of money to be their nanny, so he accepted the job offer and immediately started the new job by babysitting the baby.

One of the reasons why I loved this episode is because it finally touched upon something that I’ve thought a lot about ever since the show began. Personally, I always felt like Ryder and Lennox were old enough to take of themselves for the most part even when the show began. One of the reasons why I felt this way is because when I was their age at the start of the series, my parents were okay with me staying home alone by that point. Sure, I wasn’t old enough to drive, but I never really had all that much going on after school that would require somebody to drive me around. I suppose that might be one of the reasons why Mel initially wanted to hire Joe in the first place though. Plus, she also has Joe cook dinner for them, which is probably due to the fact that she’s often very busy with her work as a city councilwoman. Although, I cooked for myself a lot when I was Ryder and Lennox’s age so that doesn’t make that much sense to me either, but I digress.

Mel was desperate to try and find a way to convince Joe to stay and continue to work for him by finding something for him to do. At first she was saying that she wanted him to stay so he could cook for them, but Joe didn’t like that idea, especially after she likened him to being a fire extinguisher, saying that she doesn’t always need to use it, but it’s nice to have around when she finds herself in a situation that requires a fire extinguisher. In an attempt to get Joe to agree to continue working for her, she decided to ask him to install solar panels on the roof since he had apparently suggested it at one point in the past. Mel figured he would be happy if she told him that it was a good idea to put the solar panels in, but she was also worried about how he would act since she knows how much he loves to be right about things. Despite being afraid of how annoying he might be about the solar panels, she decided to ask him to do it anyway. However, Joe quickly saw through Mel’s request and said that it was a “pity solarization” and told Mel that he was still going to take the job offer working as a nanny for the other family.

Melissa and Joey: ABC Family Expands Third Season and Renews for a Fourth Season

Melissa and Joey

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Lesley Goldberg, ABC Family has expanded Melissa and Joey's third season to 20 episodes. ABC Family has also renewed the show for a fourth season. Here's an excerpt from the article:

"One-hundred episodes is a great accomplishment for any series, and we are thrilled to give Melissa and Joey the opportunity to achieve this milestone, as they’ve delivered hundreds and hundreds of laughs over the seasons,” said Kate Juergens, executive vp programming and development at ABC Family.

The third season will premiere Wednesday, May 29, at 8 p.m., leading in to Baby Daddy, with the second half of the newly ordered episodes set to air in 2014.

The series, from EPs Bob Young and David Kendall, Paula Hart, Melissa Joan Hart and Lawrence, ranks as ABC Family's highest comedy debut ever among total viewers. Its second season ranked as the series best among adults 18-49, women 18-34 and total viewers 12-34.

My thoughts: While I don't think that Melissa and Joey is the funniest TV show ever, I've always thoroughly enjoyed it. The show is still pretty funny though and has continued to get funnier throughout its run, if you ask me. Plus, it has always made for some very fun entertainment during the summer when all of the shows that I watch on network TV are in reruns until the fall. It's really nice to know that Melissa and Joey won't be ending any time soon, and I personally can't wait for season three to start. It's definitely quite an accomplishment for any TV show to reach the 100 episode milestone, so I think that the cast and crew of Melissa and Joey, as well as the network executives at ABC Family should all be very proud of the show and all of the work that they've put into it.

ABC Family Renews Melissa and Joey and Baby Daddy, Orders More Episodes of Bunheads and Cancels Jane By Design

http://cdn.media.abcfamily.com/a/images/image-util/300x225/895562fef4fe442931a852938b4017c1.jpg

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, ABC Family has renewed Melissa & Joey, Switched at Birth and Baby Daddy for another season. They've also ordered additional episodes of Bunheads, while Jane By Design has been canceled. Here's an excerpt from the article:

The Bunheads extension (which is rumored to be around eight episodes) ensures that Monday’s episode will be a summer and not a series finale. The Sutton Foster-Kelly Bishop dramedy is expected to resume production in October and return on air in early ’13.

Melissa & Joey will be heading into its third season, while Switched at Birth and Baby Daddy will both be entering Season 2. (The second half of SaB‘s rookie season bows Sept. 3; Baby Daddy and Melissa & Joey wrap Season 1 and Season 2, respectively, on Aug. 29.)

Finally, the decision to pull the plug on the struggling Jane By Design comes just weeks after the show ended its first season with 1.2 million viewers and a 0.4 demo rating, representing half of its Pretty Little Liars lead-in.

My thoughts: I absolutely love Melissa and Joey, Baby Daddy and Switched at Birth, so I'm beyond thrilled that they've all been renewed. Melissa and Joey and Baby Daddy aren't the best TV shows ever, but they are still pretty good and a lot of fun to watch after a long day. Switched at Birth is also a really great show, so I'm really happy that it's been renewed. I've only seen one episode of Jane By Design, but I really liked it, so I'm definitely kind of sad about it being canceled. As for Bunheads, I haven't watched that show, so I don't really have an opinion about that show other than it doesn't look very good based on the promos for the show that I've seen. I loved Gilmore Girls, but I'm not planning on watching on Bunheads.

Exclusive: Melissa & Joey Gets Politically Correct With Entourage's Debi Mazar-TVLine

Debi Mazar is ditching her Entourage to hang with Melissa & Joey.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the actress will guest star on the ABC Family fave as Harper Quinn, a straight-shooting political consultant/”spin doctor” enlisted by Mel (Melissa Joan Hart), who is seeking city council re-election. Harper enters the picture when Mel seeks her help in smoothing over a much-too-public scuffle.

Mazar’s episode is slated to air in spring 2012, when Season 2 of the comedy kicks off.

Mazar recently wrapped an eight-season run as super-publicist Shauna on HBO’s Entourage, which aired its series finale Sept. 11.

Greek's Scott Michael Foster Teases Melissa & Joey Romance, Possible Parenthood Return-TVLine

Original article by Megan Masters

Cappie is back! Greek alum Scott Michael Foster makes his triumphant return to ABC Family this Wednesday at 8/7c — only instead of romancing co-eds, he’s swooning over Melissa Joan Hart on Melissa & Joey.

TVLine spoke with the actor about his latest comedic gig, the possibility of a Parenthood encore, and what he really thought about Greek‘s emotional series finale.

TVLINE | Tell us about the young lover you’re playing on Melissa & Joey.
Melissa meets [my character] George at a small business association get-together. He’s a young designer with a bunch of ideas that he goes to her with, and they quickly hit it off. They start dating and he’s much younger than her, so she fibs about her age. Somewhere in the middle of their tryst, Melissa has to tell him how old she really is and is worried that he’ll care, but he ends up not caring at all because at that point he really likes her.

TVLINE | But you’re only signed on for three episodes, so how does it all wrap up? Any chance you’ll return?
It ends in a sweet way, and George could definitely come back. At least I think so. [Laughs]

TVLINE | What’s the dynamic between George and Joey, given the latter’s vested interest in Melissa?
Joey’s hard on him for being so young, but George actually goes to him for some sound business advice. He also gets a little advice about dating Melissa. And that’s the extent of their involvement with each other.

TVLINE | Greek certainly had tons of comedic clout, but it was so different than the multi-cam/live audience vibe that Melissa & Joey has to offer. Was that part of the allure?
I’d never done multiple episodes of a multi-cam show, so when ABC Family came to me about this role, I wanted to be able to do an arc in that format. I took the job and it turned out to be a really amazing experience. And I would definitely do it again.

TVLINE | You’re not the first actor to tell me that. It’s no secret that the multi-cam format isn’t the most modern, but everyone says it’s the most fun.
It really is, because it’s the closest thing to doing a play. It’s instant feedback and it’s fun. Single-camera stuff doesn’t offer that instant gratification.

TVLINE | Talk a little about the Greek finale. What did you think of the way things came to an end?
No one knew if Season 3 would be our last — and we definitely didn’t want it to end the way it would have if it had been. So when ABC Family gave us a Season 4, we were so happy to be able to wrap up all the storylines. I’m grateful for the last season and what we got to do.

TVLINE | And what about your dramatic turn on Parenthood this past spring? It seems like that storyline opposite Mae Whitman may have run its course. Might we see you again?
You know, I ended up working with some of the crew of Parenthood again this year [on a different project] and they were all asking if I was coming back, too… but I don’t know. There’s definitely an opportunity for that character to return, but I’m not sure if he will or not.
