Grey’s Anatomy: Caterina Scorsone Promoted to Series Regular for Season 11

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Caterina Scorsone who reprised the role of Amelia Shepard from Private Practice, at the end of Grey's Anatomy's 10th season has been promoted to series regular status for the show's upcoming 11th season. Here's an excerpt from the article:

Back in April, Scorsone told TVLine that she remained hopeful that Shonda Rhimes would keep Derek’s kid sister around next season. “There are so many complicated aspects to where this story could go in the future,” she shared. “I would absolutely be game to play in this world as long as she wanted me there.”

Scorsone’s promotion follows the spring departures of Grey’s cast members Sandra Oh (Cristina), Gaius Charles (Shane) and Tessa Ferrer (Leah).

My thoughts: Personally, I always loved the character Amelia Shepard and I thought that Caterina Scorsone did an amazing job of playing the character on Private Practice, so I'm very excited to hear that she'll be sticking around on Grey's Anatomy next season. While I think that Grey's Anatomy already has a fairly large cast, I think this is a good move the producers' part given the fact that Sandra Oh, Gaius Charles and Tessa Ferrer have all left the show. I like that they are bringing in a new series regular character that's already been established on the show in the past in a smaller capacity and has a connection to several of the already existing characters on the show rather than bringing in an all new character that may or may not have a connection to the other characters on the show.

It always bugs me when long-running shows add all new characters that have little if any connection to the already existing characters just for the sake of filling the void left by departing cast members or simply as an attempt on the writers' part to freshen things up on a show that's been on the air for a long time like Grey's Anatomy has been. If producers of long-running TV shows want to add cast members to a show for any variety of reasons, I think the best thing to do in most situations is to bring back previous cast members or make past or present recurring guest-stars series regulars like the show is doing with Caterina Scorsone. All things considered, I'm very happy about this news, and I can't wait to see what the writers decide to do with Amelia storyline wise now that she'll be sticking around as a series regular for Grey's Anatomy's 11th season.
