Because when you’re a spy, it’s important to walk away once the mission is over. Shrugging off rumors that Miami’s razing of the building that housed their production offices led to the USA drama’s termination, Matt Nix says, “It would have been a pain in the butt to find a new place, but you don’t decide to make or not make a series on the basis of whether the stage spaces are available.” Rather, he maintains, “A lot of factors went into it, and a lot of them were just creative. When you’re making a series, you have a choice [to] end it on your own terms, in which case you will be invariably ending it what feels like a little early.”

Nothing has ever been easy for them, and I think it’s fitting that it’s not easy at the end. For me, it’s always been less about depicting a happy relationship than about showing two people who love each other very much and are struggling to find a way to reconcile that love with who they are. There will be a lot of worrying and fingernail biting over the course of these two episodes, but… I don’t think I’ll be getting hate mail from the romantics in the audience at the end of the day.”

Welcome to the jungle — and thank you for asking about the season premiere I screened earlier today (and airing June 6). Though the action picks up nine months after the events of the finale, there are flashbacks to explain exactly why Michael re-upped with the agency that burned him — even if it meant ostracizing friends, family and one fab femme. We then in short order meet Adrian Pasdar’s character, a terrorist that lands in Michael’s crosshairs, as well as catch a few glimpses of Fi’s new beau/partner in bounty hunting (played by General Hospital‘s Stephen Martines). All told, the two-hour opener is — save for one boffo boner by Ma — quite solid, washing away any bad taste left by the so-so Season 6 finale. Plus, it features another flashback that is sure to top the mornin’ of many a Michael/Fi fan.

Jere Burns Previews Burn Notice Season 5 Finale, Justified Season 3-TVLine

As it so happens, Jere Burns booked back-to-back runs of cable-TV villainy this year. This Thursday in Burn Notice‘s Season 5 finale (USA Network, 10/9c), puppet master Anson Fullerton will brazenly respond to Michael’s discovery of his endgame by asking his asset to do the unthinkable. Then, almost a month to the day, fans of FX’s Justified will see Burns return to the role of Wynn Duffy in a much bigger way than ever before, this time in partnership with a new baddie played by Neal McDonough. TVLine spoke with Burns about his fortuitous twin billin’ as a villain.

TVLINE | My first exposure to your work was in the Dear John days, with Kirk. Was the smarmy smart aleck a pigeonhole you had to wiggle out from?
It took a little while to get looked at for the gritty single-camera stuff that I love, so I kept doing one four-camera [comedy] after another, though none of the characters returned to the smarmy level of Kirk, who I loved dearly and was so much fun to play. That character opposite Judd [Hirsch]‘s was kind of golden, and Judd was so good. I kind of got spoiled by him.

TVLINE | Still, could you have imagined back then that you’d now be playing two nefarious TV villains?
I had played bad guys on a smaller scale prior to [Dear John]. I had just come out [to Los Angeles] from New York and Off-Broadway and Broadway theater, and immediately you start playing bad guys on Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey… and nobody would see me for comedy. But in those days, the networks would always throw you a TV-movie [during the hiatus]. There’d be a woman-in-peril movie and people like Ted Danson or me could play a pedophile, or a rapist….

TVLINE | Actors who plays bad guys tend to insist they’re not the bad guy, that their character believes in what they’re doing. What does Burn Notice‘s Anson believes in?
That this guy, Michael, destroyed his life’s work, and for that Michael owes him a lot. He can get Michael to do whatever he needs done, and if Michael has to suffer a little in the process, so be it. The great thing about Anson is that he knows more about Michael’s life than anyone, because he was part of Michael’s life well before the series started.

TVLINE | What is Michael’s play now that he knows Anson is out to rebuild his network? There’s an early scene this week where Michael confronts him, and Fi even takes a shot at you.
That’s Michael posturing, but it’s a posture he can’t really maintain. Because until the finale, he doesn’t win anything.

TVLINE | Anson compels Michael to burn some spies, which is the second most devastating thing, behind putting Fi in prison, to throw at him.
Right, right. But even if that doesn’t happen, Fiona is still not off the hook. In this world, people – including Anson, to an extent — are always having their integrity challenged. Like, how far will Michael go? What is the grey area? What’s legal doesn’t matter, but what is ethical? What rules do we live by?




TVLINE | Speaking of unethical types, I hear that you’ve got a very juicy storyline this season on Justified.
It’s really good. We’re shooting [Episodes] 7 and 8 concurrently right now, and the whole season is kind of amazing. Neal McDonough is fabulous [as Quarles, a Detroit mobster], and he and I sort of play cohorts. It becomes all about oxycontin and the battled of the distributors down there in the South, and who’s involved.

TVLINE | Are Wynn Duffy and Quarles equal partners, or are you just his local muscle?
Initially when he comes down, I’m happy to let somebody else take over, use their connections to finance this oxy business, and let him think that I’m his lackey-slash-partner. I’ll give him that satisfaction.

TVLINE | Was it at all intimidating for you and Neal to basically fill the void left by Emmy winner Margo Martindale (who played Mags Bennett)?
No, because Neal is so good and the writing is so good, and that show is unusually collaborative. Nothing is ever daunting, everything’s exciting, and everybody is enjoying the s–t out of what they’re doing!

Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on Once Upon a Time, Castle, New Girl, Gossip Girl, Awkward and More!-TVLine

Mayor may not “Caskett” have a conflict ahead? What happens when Once Upon a Time and Buffy cross streams? Is Awkward love in the air? Read on for those answers, plus other teases from TV’s hottest shows.


Castle | As you anxiously await the well-teased “Cuffed” fun coming on Monday, here is Stana Katic dishing on the following episode, in which Castle’s good friend, Mayor Weldon himself, is suspected of murder. “It’s a conflicted case for Beckett,” Katic said. “She knows that the mayor is valuable in keeping Castle in the precinct, but at the same time she doesn’t want anyone who’s committed murder to get away with it. She won’t compromise her sense of right and wrong.” Castle, meanwhile, understandably maintains the mayor’s innocence, creating friction in the squad room. “It’s his friend and he thinks he knows him,” says Katic, “so [Rick and Kate] will stand on two different sides of the line. But the case is a little bit greyer for Beckett than for Castle, and she has to figure out what to do with [the implicating] information.”

Once Upon a Time | Fans of ABC’s fantastical freshman series geeked out more than a little when Emma Caulfield was cast as the Blind Witch from Hansel and Gretel lore. And the show’s bosses share that enthusiasm. “We’ve been huge fans of hers since Buffy, so we’re very excited to have her on the show,” Adam Horowitz told me. Added Edward Kitsis: “We couldn’t think of anyone better to trap two children in a house and try to eat them” than the portrayer of a onetime vengeance demon. Though the EPs were hesitant to share much more about Caufield’s Episode 9 storyline, I’m hearing it will be revealed that the Blind Witch has a none-too-friendly past with the Evil Queen – something having to do with an item that one of the villainesses stole from the other.

Awkward | Dipping into the reader mailbag, Raissa asks: “Any Awkward scoop?” Oh, honey, everything I do is awkward. TVLine recently met up with the MTV charmer’s creator, Lauren Iungerich, and she confirmed that Sadie will for sure get a love interest in Season 2 — namely a fella who is “a lot different than Sadie, although very confident. He has to have enough of a backbone to take her on.” Iungerich typified the romance as “very surprising” and – wait for it – “definitely love.” Awwww…kward.

Gossip Girl | Popping open another reader email, Victoria wonders “if (when?) the Van der Woodsens/Rhodes are ever going to find the truth out about Ivy/Charlie” — a very legit Q seeing as how just this week “Charlie” “admitted” that she was “really” Charlie but was “forced” to pose as “Ivy.” (Whew, I’m out of airquotes.) When I chatted up Kaylee Defer at the 100th episode soiree, she was mum on the timetable for that reveal, but ventured that once the bombshell is dropped, two adults – and not Serena – will be most devastated by the duplicity. “Serena is just so used to people saying that they’re not who they really say they are,” the ingénue noted, “while Lily and Rufus became kind of parents to [Ivy] — so they’ll probably take it the hardest.”

New Girl | If you think that quirky Justin Long represents the sort of “interesting” men Jess will date, think again. In fact, right now the Fox hit is casting the guest-starring role of a completely and painfully uninteresting fella Jess will hook up with on, of all occasions, Valentine’s Day. Adding to the awkward: This guy still lives with his ex, which makes for less-than-heavy petting on the sofa. Nick’s “date” for the night, meanwhile, is also a dude – an intern who works for his soon-to-be girlfriend Julia (played by Party Downer Lizzy Caplan).

Burn Notice | I cued up the Season 5 finale (airing Dec. 15) this morning, and it’s got Michael, Fi and the gang jumping through allll kinds of hoops, largely because of a big reveal that’s uncorked at the close of the preceding episode. The good news is that the good guys find evidence that links Anson to the explosion/deaths he’s been threatening to pin on Fi; the bad news is that said “smoking gun” might not be around long enough to prevent Fi from turning herself in. Why now, more than before, is Ms. Glenanne compelled to “confess”? Let’s just say that Anson is going to ask Michael to do the unthinkable.

Will Jennifer Carpenter bring Dex appeal to The Good Wife? Are Sam and Dean due to get involved in another fine Ness? And who is joining the crusade to out-snark Gossip Girl? Read on for those answers, plus other teases from TV’s hottest shows.


The Good Wife | If you were among those hoping for Jennifer Carpenter to play a love/lust interest for Kalinda… I am here to dash your (dirty) dreams. Instead, I have learned this about the Dexter vet’s role: In a 180-degree turn from Deb Morgan, J-Carp will guest-star a soft-spoken university professor who is fired due to her conservative religious and political beliefs. Alicia and Caitlin (Anna Camp) represent the prof in a suit against Louis Canning (Emmy nominee Michael J. Fox) and his firm. Robert and Michelle King, the creators of the acclaimed CBS drama, say of the casting, “We loved Jennifer in Dexter and we were especially thrilled to see her play such a different role: a committed believer who doesn’t swear once.”

Supernatural | Should Sam and Dean get fitted for zoot suits? It would seem that the CW series is planning a trip to the 1940s or thereabouts, seeing as a casting call has gone out for the role of – wait for it – Eliot Ness. Yes, as in the famous G-man who headed up The Untouchables. Specifically, the show wants an actor in his 40s who presents “an unyielding regality” and in a sharp suit “is the epitome of cool unflappability.” Oh, why am I still talking – y’all are busy imaging the Winchesters in zoot suits. Wakey-wakey!

Gossip Girl | A pair of shockers are coming up on The CW’s veteran Monday drama. For one, Diana (played by the ageless Elizabeth Hurley) is about to take on a surprising new hire at her website poised to rival Gossip Girl. Secondly, something tells me Blair is going to regret holding that bridesmaid competition, based on how it shakes out.

Burn Notice | This morning I cued up the Burn Notice midseason premiere, which airs Nov. 3 and picks up with Michael begrudgingly yet completely under the thumb of big new baddie Anson Fullerton (played with zeal by Jere Burns). While Michael awaits word from Agent Pearce (Lauren Stamile) on whether he can keep his CIA clearance, Fullerton compels him to hunt down the creator of a computer “bug” that can wipe out, wholesale, sensitive information from a large computer network – say, the CIA’s! The hour also feature a caper involving Jesse and Maddie, and a steely turn by The Event‘s Ian Anthony Dale. I’m kinda done with Michael’s narration/”espionage tips” – seriously, who among us doesn’t know to blow something up at the front door of a compound to sneak in the back? – but I do believe the show is back on track.

Once Upon a Time | In Episode 2 of ABC’s fun new drama (airing Sundays at 8/7c), viewers will meet the Evil Queen’s Magic Mirror, played by Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito. And make no mistake, this colorful character is no mere piece of glass in a gilded frame. “The Magic Mirror,” offers Lana Parilla, “is [the Evil Queen's] inner voice. It’s almost like truth… like her subconscious… like the part of the brain that doesn’t lie.” As such, the Queen uses her reflective confidante to not only ” see what’s going on in the Enchanted Forest, to see what Snow White’s doing and where she is,” says Parilla, “but also to seek answers and some truth.” Wait, isn’t this guy the one who in essence put Snow in the coffin in the first place?

A Gifted Man | Now that we have met Eriq La Salle’s Dr. “E-Mo” Morris, a rather chill character, you may be surprised to know that he, like Michael, may be harboring a surprising truth of his own. “He definitely has a secret, and that makes him a really interesting character to me,” La Salle says. “He lives life to the fullest and is motivated by who he is and some of the secrets that he’s holding.” But for the immediate future, expect to only see the brilliant neuropsychiatrist’s softer, studlier side. “He has a very active social life,” La Salle almost brags. “I definitely see him as a bit of a ladies’ man.”

Charisma Carpenter on Sexy, Satisfying Burn Notice, Bites Into Today's Vampire Craze-TVLine

This Thursday on Burn Notice (USA Network, 9/8c), in order to nab a bio-weapons specialist who’s doing the Russians’ bidding, Michael and Fiona go undercover as rich marrieds at a South American resort. There, they target their asset’s beautiful and emotionally vulnerable wife, played by Charisma Carpenter. The Whedonverse alumna spoke with TVLine about how this episode will be super-satisfying for fans, shared tales from its “hardcore” set, and offered her qualified take on pop culture’s new vampire craze.

TVLINE | So, what are you playing here on Burn Notice – the wife of some nefarious type or something? [Laughs] Well, of course! As always. Tom Gallop (The Bourne Ultimatum) plays a smarty-pants physicist who went to work for the Russians, and now the FBI wants us. I guess they want us both, for some reason – I don’t know why I’m valuable to them, but hey, I’ll go for it! Basically, I hate my husband now because our lives are boring and run by the Russians — he doesn’t want to spend any money or do anything – so I’m this unhappy trophy wife, which is a bad combination. You don’t want a trophy wife to be unhappy.

TVLINE | How does your Nicki figure into Michael and Fiona’s plan? The only way to access both of us is through me, and because they were listening in on our hotel room arguments, they find out that I need some “extra attention.”

TVLINE | They prey upon her marital unhappiness? Exactly. And the way Michael and Fi team up in this one is like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, so the people who usually watch Burn Notice are really going to like it. It’s a lot of Fi-and-Michael time, posing as a couple.

TVLINE | You got to work a good amount with Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle Anwar? Yeah, the four of us [including Gallop] are together a lot, and it was a lot of fun. We run and jump into a marina, and as we come out we’re being shot at – and since Fiona is really good with weapons, there’s a lot of shooting back; Gabrielle and I are poolside in bikinis; and there are a lot of kind of Cordy moments. [Burn Notice co-executive producer] Lisa Joy wrote it, and I had some great lines. Like, when I’m very upset with the Russian bodyguard, I say, “Is it Get Lost O’Clock yet?” [Laughs]

TVLINE | Would people be surprised to know how non-fierce Gabrielle is off-screen? She is totally Earth mother — to meet her is to love her. She’s incredibly gracious and welcoming, and she’s very concerned for others. Like, I was running in these platform heels, and on the fifth take my heels literally went over my head. I took a digger so gnarly, into this gravel – and they didn’t stop! I was like, “OK, I guess we’re not stopping….” [Laughs] It’s hardcore on that set. But Gabrielle was like, “I’m really embarrassed! This is not acceptable. Is she all right?”

 

TVLINE | Can you tell us what’s going on in the two pictures TVLine has posted? 
They’re from just before a ballroom scene, where a very sexy tango happens. Like I said, fans are going to love this episode.

Well, she’s all dressed up and has no one to enjoy it with! This episode is just going to be so epic, I’m really excited for the fans. I know how [Angel] fans would react when the storyline was centered around Angel and Cordelia, so Burn Notice viewers are not going to be disappointed. And I’m in it!

TVLINE | USA Network is pretty good about recycling their guest stars. What other show of theirs would you like to drop by next?
White Collar! And Suits is really good, too. Gabriel Macht has got “something” about him. He’s not a traditionally good-looking guy, but I really like his confidence. It’s like yes, his character is arrogant, but there’s something else there that’s mysterious and sexy. I like it! It makes me want to know more.

TVLINE | Lastly, do you kind of have to laugh at the vampire craze that is so hot these days, when you and the Scoobies were doing it like 15 years ago?
I’m not surprised. I deduce the popularity to be all about the chemistry between the people. On Twilight, the chemistry between Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart … I mean, clearly they’re together [in real life], and it’s palpable in the way they look at each other. That’s what drew everybody in and made Twilight so incredibly popular. It is about that universal feeling of love and connection, understanding and protection, and sex, and that’s so visceral in Twilight. As far as True Blood goes, what I’ve seen of it is very sexy and raw. That cover they did for Rolling Stone brought out a dual side of me — offended that my son would see it on the one hand, yet intrigued by how daring it was with the sexuality on display. All that, plus blood.

TVLINE | The very idea of “feeding on” someone can be so metaphorically sexual.
Also it’s a very dark part of our nature, to destroy the weaker to survive. That appeals to a very central part of our humanity – how far will you go to survive?
