He was incredibly kind to me and I may have geeked out over my ’90s memories of Major Payne and In Living Color. He’s an icon!” she gushes. “And Clayne [Crawford] was so fun to play off of. The Tree Hill alum’s Season 2 arc kicks off with Episode 2, where she’ll be playing Anna Schaefer, a government operative charged with overseeing the militarization of the Humanichs program. Anna causes great moral discomfort for Julie (played by Grace Gummer) and Charlie (Tyler Hilton) as she pushes the boundaries of what is ethically sound for the robotic soldiers they are creating — so, yeah, “bad guy.” (As Hil once said: “You know me. I can’t go anywhere without causing trouble! That’s just how it goes.”)

Series boss Jeff Eastin told me that while he was at first a “little disappointed” by the six-episode order, “What we ultimately realized was we had just enough time to do one really good story, so this year there’s really no ‘Case of the Week.’ This year it’s really going to focus on character, and the relationships, and moving that forward in a real nice sort of ‘limited series.’”

Please tell me Hilarie Burton will come back for final season of White Collar. One episode is all I need. – Simona
I’m sticking by my previous reportage — that Sara is not set to resurface during the USA series’ farewell run. That said, Matt Bomer teases that within the last six episodes, “There is a little [time for romance], but I’m not going to tell you too much about it!” P.S. Besides, Neal’s dance card is plenty full with a new lady. “There is a really incredible girl who comes into Neal’s life, played by the gorgeous and talented Bridget Regan,” Matt Bomer previews. “She is sort of atypical in terms of what Neal finds attractive in a woman — with the exception of the fact that she’s a redhead. She’s like an onion, and in every episode more peels off and Neal becomes more attracted to her.”

Ausiello: For those wondering if Webber made it out of the finale alive, Sarah Drew invites you to continue wondering. “The sad little Chief is still face-down on the [basement] floor,” she tells my colleague Matt Mitovich of the premiere. Meanwhile, on the romance front, Drew hints that April and Jackson may be driven further apart by the ”challenging” situation her character created. “Jackson proposed to her and she said yes, but then basically said no, and all of the sudden she just accepted a proposal [from EMT Matt, played by Justin Bruening]. But then Jackson almost dies and she decides now she wants him? Put yourself in his shoes — that’s gotta feel a little crappy!” Yep, just tried on his kicks — kinda crappy.

Ausiello: Yet disappear the homewrecker will. “We don’t have any plans for her to return at this time,” series creator Shonda Rhimes tells me. “But we loved her; she was great.”

When I spoke to Hilarie Burton last month (in the midst of her rabblerousing Grey’s Anatomy arc), she admitted to having “no idea what’s going on” with Sara’s possible return. That said, she agreed that we — and Neal — may need to miss Sara some in order to give her next appearance enough oomph. And the actress is always game for another go-round. “I talked to Matt [Bomer] and Willie [Garson] and Tiffani [Thiessen] over their hiatus and they really are the loveliest bunch of people,” she effused. “I never take that for granted.”

According to Deadline Hollywood's Nellie Andreeva, Bridget Regan has been cast in a major nine-episode recurring guest-star role in season 5 of White Collar. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Regan's role:

She will play Rebecca Lowe, a beautiful rare book scholar who becomes entangled with Neal’s (Matt Bomer) latest con, and then ultimately Neal himself. In the Season 4 finale in March, Neal parted ways with on-again, off-again girlfriend, Sara Ellis (Hilarie Burton).

My thoughts: While I'm not very familiar with Bridget Regan's work as an actress, I've come across her name a lot in the past several months. The only thing that I've seen her in was the TNT series Perception. I really liked Bridget on Perception though, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing her on White Collar. I've really been craving some scoop on White Collar's fifth season lately, so it's great to finally get some scoop on the upcoming season.

That being said, I'm beyond thrilled that Neal and Sara's relationship is over, at least for now. I have no idea if the producers will bring her back again at some point. Personally, I'm hoping that they won't bring Hilarie Burton back again, because I never really liked the relationship between Neal and Sara. I just never thought that they were a good match for each other. I could barely stand her character on One Tree Hill, I didn't like her at all on Grey's Anatomy, but then again, that was partially because I'm a huge fan of the Callie and Arizona pairing, and I don't like that the writers brought her in to cause problems for Callie and Arizona's relationship. I'm also not really a fan of Hilarie Burton as an actress in general, but I digress.

Bridget Regan's character sounds like she could potentially be a very good match for Neal, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens between them. Personally, season 5 of White Collar can't come soon enough for my taste.

I want to know if we’re going to see more Sara now? I was a little disappointed by the beginning of this season, because I was expecting to see much more [of] her character, due to the actress, Hilarie Burton, [being] made regular. And if you can give me some spoilers about this, I really hope to Neal and Sara back together!! Thank you so much; I look forward to January 22nd!!!!! — Clemence.

First, I got so many wonderful questions for my chat with executive producer Jeff Eastin and a little closer to the premiere, I’m going to highlight several more for a post. Thanks to everyone who sent them in! But until then, I’ll delve a little deeper into this question. In short: YES! More Sara is on the way, and, in fact, I can tell you she’ll be around for much more than just assisting on capers. “The last couple of shows before the finale, Sara plays a very big role,” says Eastin. “I have to say what happens to them [in the finale] is pretty spectacular.” (Hint: The Empire State Building is involved.)

Additionally, Eastin shares that Sara will have a pretty significant development in her professional life: She gets a job offer! The problem? It’s in another country! And while she and Neal have enjoyed their friends-with-benefits arrangement thus far, “when this job offer comes up in the U.K., it certainly puts a lot of pressure on them.” “They realize this [could be] the end,” he says. “Suddenly, because of that pressure, Neal certainly feels pressure to make a decision: Is he content to let her disappear for his life.”

‘WHITE COLLAR’: SARA RETURNS – TO SHOOT NEAL DOWN?

Thanks to all who reached out via Twitter with their White Collar queries. But one from @Noora7 stood out to me as a great place to deep-dive this week. She asked: “Are we gonna see anymore Sara-Neal? I love them together.”

Well, next week, Noora, Sara returns! But unfortunately for Neal, it’s to deliver a big, ugly truth bomb. “A lot of [the episode] is them trying to define who they are,” says executive producer Jeff Eastin. “She really bursts his bubble. One of my favorite lines is, ‘You know, you left, and, guess what, the world kept turning.’”

Cold, Sara. Cold. But also true. Eastin explains that from Sara’s POV, she really “expected nothing less from [Neal]” and doesn’t hold it against him as a friend. But, he warns, their conversation leaves them with “a sort of uneasy friendship” that will play out for a while.

As for the search for Sara’s sister, the episode doesn’t deliver a great deal of new info, but “we do know the events that happened toward the end of the season with her do involve the sister,” says Eastin.

Ausiello: I’ll defer to the other Matt — Mitovich — our resident expert in all things Hilarie Burton (restraining order notwithstanding), and he has it on “extremely good authority” that Hil is booked for a total of four episodes, two of which she has thus far shot.

White Collar: Matt Bomer Previews Neal's Not-So-Perfect Island Life and Big Daddy Issues-TVLine

Here's an interview that Matt Bomer did with TVLine's Vlada Gelman, which gives some scoop on season 4. In the interview, Bomer talks about Neal's life on the island and being on the run from the FBI once again. Bomer also talks about how Neal will get back to New York and go back to working for the FBI, Neal's love life in season 4, and Neal's search for his family. TVLINE | How is island life treating Neal?
[Laughs] You know, it’s very Dickensian for Neal. It’s kind of the best of times, and the worst of times. The good news is he’s living the dream, and the bad news is he’s living the dream in his early 30s. So while he’s enjoying this life he’s constructed for himself, it’s also a little early in the game for him to be this retired guy on an island. He misses aspects of his collaboration with Peter (Tim DeKay) and his life back in New York, the culture and the diversity there.

TVLINE | So he’s itching to get back?
Don’t get me wrong – he’s Neal Caffrey, so he’s obviously made the absolute best of the situation he’s been given. He has the nicest pad. He has an amazing morning routine, a very leisurely life. There are aspects of that he really enjoys because they are things he fantasized about for so long. He kindled a little island romance for himself, going nice and slow on island time. Then things get interrupted, and as annoying as that is – even though he won’t admit it – there’s a welcome aspect to it as well.

TVLINE | How much of a threat is Mekhi Phifer’s FBI agent to Neal?
We don’t really realize what a huge threat he is until the second episode. We hear about how dangerous he is and how renegade he is, how it’s martial law with him in a way. He sets the terms of what’s legal and what’s not. Neal and Mozzie (Willie Garson) take that with a grain of salt until they encounter him and realize, “OK, he means business.” There’s something very specific that happens in the second episode that I think will make people take his character very seriously, very quickly.

TVLINE | Obviously, Neal is going to somehow find his way back to New York. What can you share about how that comes about?
It will involve Peter and a madcap, high stakes escape in typical White Collar fashion. [Laughs] It’ll be suspenseful, and it’ll have a big cliffhanger.

TVLINE | Is it safe to say the possibility of walking free from the computation hearing is off the table?
I’ll tell you this: In typical Neal fashion, he has to figure out the best way to get back into the FBI’s good graces so he’s not back in the clink. It all ends up cooking together in one big game plan – the return and a way for him to get back into their good graces.

TVLINE | What does this mean for Peter and Neal’s relationship?
It’s closer than ever in some ways — and they’re more at odds in some ways, too. It’s out on the table that they respect each other and they care about each other. But at the same time, their poker game this season is more high stakes than ever and ends up coming to a boiling point in Episode 9, where they really are at odds. But they figure out a way to get through it and, as usual, their unconventional pairing is what ultimately always brings them back together because each has something the other wouldn’t think of, couldn’t think of, something that they need.

My thoughts: I personally can't wait for season 4 of White Collar to start. It sounds like season 4 is going to be very exciting. I'm so glad that Gloria Votsis will be returning in season 4, because I've always loved the character Alex. Honestly, I'm very happy that Hilarie Burton won't be returning as a series regular for season 4. I never really liked the character Sara, and I've never really cared for Hilarie Burton as an actress. She always kind of annoyed me on One Tree Hill, and I don't think she really fit in all that much on White Collar.

Ausiello: As you may have surmised, given how Season 3 ended and factoring in the bevy of beauties headed Neal’s way — Alias‘ Mia Maestro, Supergirl, Lost‘s Rebecca Mader and a returning Gloria Vatsos included — Burton will not be a series regular for the coming season. However, that’s not to say we’ll never see Sara again; at last count, Burton had shot four episodes for Season 4, which premieres July 10.

Question: I need some scoop on The Glades, Burn Notice and White Collar! —Marlene
Ausiello: I choose Option No. 3! Although all teasers to date have suggested that Neal is already hot-n-heavy with the local island girl being played by Mia Maestro when Season 4 opens, that is in fact not the case. He’s made some inroads in wooing her, sure, but she’s still holding out for a grand “honest” moment from “Mr. James Maine.” And when he gives her what she wants? Oh my. Also, if yesterday’s promo seemed shameless, know this: It left out a scene of Neal showering.

White Collar | TVLine reader Julie emailed me, concerned that the scoop from last week’s Inside Line – about the casting of a pretty café owner who cozies up to on-the-lam Neal in whatever tropical locale he’s now hanging his fedora – means things are kaput for him and Sara. “It seemed pretty obvious that something was starting to brew between them again,” Julie writes. “Do you know if Hilarie Burton will continue to be a series regular in Season 4?” Well, series boss Jeff Eastin acknowledges that with Neal and his ex now separated by, at the very least, geography, “They are not in a good place.” That said, sources tell me Hilarie Burton likely will continue as a series regular, while Eastin himself says the status of Neal/Sara “is something we explore in Season 4.”
