But when we spoke with Jerrika Hinton, aka Jackson's ex Stephanie who delivered the crushing news to the new parents about their baby, she couldn't wait to see the story unfold. "I'm excited for the debate that the Japril baby's fate is going to bring up," Hinton says. "It's a smart thing that the writers have done and I'm excited to see what people think of it. It's a real life decision that people have to wrestle with, and this is something Shonda Rhimes does all the time, reflecting real life issues on screen."

You're in luck! According to Sarah Drew, last week's episode was just the beginning of April and Jackson's season-long journey. "I'm so excited for fans to see April and Jackson's relationship develop more," Drew tells me. "We've seen them as best friends, we've seen them as lovers, we've seen them fall in love and now we get to see them settling into their lives as a married couple and all the craziness that comes with preparing for baby. I'm so excited to jump into their marriage in a way that we haven't gotten to yet."

"He is really going to have to find a balance between his personal relationships and his bias and the fact that the Avery Foundation runs everything, but he's very junior to some of the other attendings."

Shonda Rhimes echoes that which Sarah Drew shared with us — Jackson wasn’t exactly bowled over by April’s mid-superstorm declaration of love. “He’s been very patient, and she’s the one who sort of walked away from him. And when the finale happened, he was feeling kind of ‘done,’ so her declaration is definitely going to have interesting repercussions,” Rhimes allows. “She’s engaged to somebody else, and he’s with somebody else, and it’s not as if either of them is behaving, I would say, in the most mature manner. They’ve definitely got challenging times ahead.”

As one could assume, “They are going to be exploring their relationship this season,” (the ridiculously pretty) Camilla Luddington told me at TCA. “I don’t trust Grey’s to make it all go perfectly, but I do know they are crazy about each other and in love.” And since the two-hour season opener picks up continuously, with more superstorm insanity, don’t expect any full-on on-call room nookie anytime soon. “We got smooches [in the finale], that’s all,” Luddington notes with a smile. “So we’ll see where that leads!”

Ausiello: For those wondering if Webber made it out of the finale alive, Sarah Drew invites you to continue wondering. “The sad little Chief is still face-down on the [basement] floor,” she tells my colleague Matt Mitovich of the premiere. Meanwhile, on the romance front, Drew hints that April and Jackson may be driven further apart by the ”challenging” situation her character created. “Jackson proposed to her and she said yes, but then basically said no, and all of the sudden she just accepted a proposal [from EMT Matt, played by Justin Bruening]. But then Jackson almost dies and she decides now she wants him? Put yourself in his shoes — that’s gotta feel a little crappy!” Yep, just tried on his kicks — kinda crappy.

Question: Do you have any news on Lauren (Hilarie Burton) returning to Grey’s Anatomy in Season 10? I heard they will pick up right where they left off, so I’m assuming Lauren can’t disappear like that, especially during a super storm, right? —Khair
Ausiello: Yet disappear the homewrecker will. “We don’t have any plans for her to return at this time,” series creator Shonda Rhimes tells me. “But we loved her; she was great.”

Ausiello: Hi Simão Simon! A major character’s life will hang in the balance when the clock ticks down on Season 9 next week, but before you go calling Rhimes a serial Grim Reaper, consider the facts. “Everyone thinks I kill everybody — and I don’t,” she insists with a chuckle. “I was doing a tally and I’ve only killed three series regulars [while] four series regular [characters] just left into the ether somewhere to do other things in other hospitals. Ausiello: Though for the short term, April is focused on The Virgin EMT Matthew, their road may become a bumpy one. Previewing the April 4 episode, Sarah Drew says, “[April] winds up working on a patient with Jackson, and he winds up being there for her in a way that she needs when she has a crisis of faith. But when she tries to talk to Matthew about it, he misinterprets what she’s talking about and leaves her even more confused than before!”

Grey's Anatomy: Sarah Drew Talks Season 8 Finale, Death, and Season 9-TVLine

According to TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, Sarah Drew will be returning for season 9 of Grey's Anatomy. In the article, Drew talks about the season 8 finale, Lexie's death and what's ahead in season 9. Here's an excerpt from the article where Drew talks about returning for season 9 and hints at what will be happening with April in season 9:



The happy news for Drew is that while series boss Shonda Rhimes has been hinting that Lexie and Teddy might not be the only faces not returning this fall, she already has received her official pick-up letter in the mail, “so I’m definitely back,” she reports.

Not that she didn’t have a scare or two as Season 8 drew to a close. “Anybody can go at any time, especially on Grey’s…. so there was always that bit of trepidation,” she admits. “But I’m in this place in my life where I have to let go and say, ‘Whatever will be, will be. If I get killed off, I get killed off.’

“But I’m really glad I didn’t get killed off,” she makes clear.

Nonetheless, April’s professional prospects are likely to be few after not passing the boards. “She’s going to freak out, I am sure,” Drew ventures. “I’m really excited to see what happens.”

Maybe April will soothe the professional sting by focusing on her personal life – namely how Jackson Avery (played by Jesse Williams), who late last season became Kepner’s first lover, fits into it?

“They have a very deep friendship. But I don’t know if that’s going to evolve into a romance or not,” Drew says. “I think it could be really interesting either way.”

My thoughts: I'm thrilled that Sarah Drew will be returning for season 9. I loved April in season 8, and I'm really excited to see where things go with April in season 9, especially considering the fact that she failed her boards. It will be really interesting to see how the writers handle that.
