Question: Parenthood continues to impress me this season. Can you give us a teaser for the Season 5 finale? —Ben
Ausiello: As TVLine was first to report, Matt Lauria is back as Ryan in this season’s final two episodes and, per exec producer Jason Katims, when he sees Amber again “it’s over very, very dramatic circumstances and incorporates some of our other characters in a rich story. It’s a very complicated situation for Amber because, clearly, this is somebody that she has such incredibly strong feelings for and that doesn’t just go away. But on the other hand, there are lots of complications for them. We’ll see her grappling with the closeness that she feels with Ryan and the feeling that it’s important that they make a break from each other.”

Question: Very much looking forward to Jason Ritter’s Parenthood return this Thursday. Anything else you can tease? —Nick
Ausiello: Per Katims, his one-episode comeback “gets launched when Amber happens to run into him in the street, and it leads to Sarah seeing him again after a year has passed in both of their lives. It’s a moving story — and it’s just moving for me to literally see [Ritter and Lauren Graham] together on screen again. What I liked about the story is that the scenes between them play out in this very realistic way. They have such incredible chemistry together. … It also sets up for Sarah where she’s going the rest of the season.”

We stalked down Jason Ritter to do just that for you, and he tells us there's a very good chance you'll be seeing Mark again. "There is a chance, not 100 percent sure yet, but there is a good chance," he spills. "I don't want to make any promises in case we decide not to, but so far, so good." Squeal! Still, given their pretty heartbreaking ending, Ritter says he'd like to see "some kind of resolution" for Mark and Sarah…or to see them "get back together. Who knows?! Maybe a painful understanding ending."

Ausiello: I did some digging and, sadly, there are no current plans for Mark to resurface. Of course, Parenthood has a long 22-episode season ahead of it, so those plans could very well change.

Parenthood: Matt Lauria Returning as Ryan in Season 5-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Matt Lauria has signed a deal to reprise the role of Ryan in Parenthood's fifth season. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Lauria's return:

Lauria’s specific episode count is not known, but word is the Friday Night Lights alum is currently on board for roughly half of Season 5′s 22 episodes.

Last month at the ATX Festival, Lauria expressed optimism that he’d be back as Ryan, telling TVLine’s Meg Masters, “We don’t know what the details are going to be, but [exec producer] Jason [Katims] recently asked me, ‘Are you up for it?’ and I told him, ‘I’m up for it!’ And since then, there have been some conversations.”

For his part, Katims told fans at PaleyFest earlier this year, “I absolutely loved the dynamic between [Amber and Ryan] and I would love to continue that storyline.”

My thoughts: I'm definitely excited that Matt Lauria will be returning for season 5 of Parenthood, and I'm especially excited about the fact that it sounds like he will be appearing in a large chunk of the fifth season. I really like Ryan, and I think he has a very interesting backstory that I think a lot of people can identify with. That being said, I'd like to make a bit of a side-note and mention that I'm really glad that they are also bringing Ray Ramano back next season.

Hank is perhaps my favorite out of all the love interests that Sarah has had throughout the show's run at this point, and I'm honestly starting to get a little tired of watching the revolving door of love interests for Sarah, which have unfortunately always been a big part of her storylines on the show. Don't get me wrong, I really like Jason Ritter and I did like the character Mark, but he always came across as someone who was better suited to not really be anything more than a guy that Sarah could simply have a casual fling with rather than be someone that she has a serious relationship with. I just always felt like the age difference between Sarah and Mark caused a lot of problems in their relationship, especially when it came to Amber and Drew. That being said, I really am excited for Parenthood's fifth season to start.

Question: I’m loving Ray Romano’s character Hank on Parenthood. It feels like they finally found a great match for Sarah. Any news on what will happen in the wake of their kiss? —Caia 
Ausiello: In the short term, their smooch may be good news for Mark of all people. “I think it made her resolve a little stronger to try to keep her life on the track that she planned and hoped for, and finally looked like she was about to achieve,” muses Lauren Graham. And in the long-term? “We still don’t know what’s going to happen — nor does [series creator Jason Katims],” she maintains. “[He] kind of adjusts as things go along and picks up on the threads that are interesting to him, more than they maybe do on most shows…. So the line I’m trying to play is confusion, and it’s justifiably confusing what’s happening.”

Question: I love this season of Parenthood! It seemed like in the last episode Matt Lauria’s character Ryan had a special connection with Amber. Are we going to see more of that?!—Christine 
Ausiello: Oh, yes. That special connection is about to morph into a full-blown romance. Lauria, meanwhile, tells us he’s on board for at least 10 episodes — an arc it sounds like he’d be happy to see extended ever further. “They gave me this amazing gift of playing this part that’s taken me to new depths as an artist and has made me a much more compassionate human being,” the Friday Night Lights vet raves. “I’m on board.”

Question: I love, love, love Ray Romano on Parenthood and have been scouring the Internet looking for scoop on when his “multi-episode arc” will wrap up. Can I expect to see him through most of this season? —Amanda 
Ausiello: Hank will be around for most of the season, much to the dismay of poor Mark. And even though Sarah’s personal and professional partners have yet to come face to face, Jason Ritter says the situation nonetheless remains very awkward. “We’re trying to suss each other out,” he explains. “He can’t quite figure out why she’s with me, and I can’t quite figure out what their thing is.” Despite the Hank complication, Sarah and Mark are about to take a big step forward. “There’s talk of moving in together,” previews Ritter, “and what that means for her son, Drew. Living with your teacher is probably not the coolest thing for a kid who’s already self-conscious at school about his mom dating a teacher. So Mark tries to win over Drew over, who’s a little standoffish. But I’m working on him. I’ll crack him.”

Jason Ritter on the Emmys and Season 4 of Parenthood-TVLine

Here's an interview that Jason Ritter did with TVLine's Megan Masters. In the interview, Ritter talks about how his reaction to receiving a best Guest Actor in a Drama Series nomination for his work on Parenthood. Ritter also talks about Sarah and Mark's relationship in season 4 and how the arrival of Ray Romano's character will affect their relationship. Here's an excerpt from the article where Jason Ritter talks about his reaction to finding out about his Emmy nomination:



TVLINE | Congratulations! Take us through your nominations morning.
There have been times where I’ve opted not to wake up and check [the nominations], but I’ve always known when it was on. And for some reason this year it just totally slipped my mind. So, I went from, “Who is calling me at six in the morning? That is unacceptable!” to “Oh my gosh, someone’s texting me again and again — something horrible has happened!’ to this total surprise. I still can’t quite believe it.

TVLINE | Parenthood is a show full of great actors — including yourself — and you were singled out. That has to feel unbelievable.
That does feel crazy, because I feel like a visitor to the awesome planet that is Parenthood. [Laughs] Even from the very first second I started working on that show a couple of years ago, it just felt so wonderful.  There are so many incredible actors on that show — all the way from the very young kids to Bonnie Bedelia and Craig T. Nelson. I’ve always felt like I’m trying to keep up and not draw attention to myself as the guy who should clearly not be on the show with all those people.

TVLINE | Did you hear from your Parenthood family?
Yeah, I heard from [series creator] Jason Katims, and cast-wise I heard from Lauren [Graham] and Mae [Whitman] and Sarah [Ramos], Peter [Krause]… It’s such a supportive group of people. There’s no ego; everyone is just so happy for me and for the show. I love all those people quite a lot, so it’s nice.

My thoughts: I'm so happy that Jason Ritter received an Emmy nomination for his work on Parenthood. Parenthood is such a wonderful show, and I hate that the show has constantly been overlooked by so many people. While I wish the show had received a best drama nomination and that maybe some of the series regulars could have received Emmy nominations, I'm just glad that the show is finally being recognized for something.

Parenthood: Jason Ritter Returning for Season 4-TVLine

According to TVLine's Megan Masters, Jason Ritter will be returning for season 4 of Parenthood. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Ritter's return to the show:




“As far as I understand, they want to keep me around, and we’ll do as many episodes with me as we can all do,” Ritter told TVLine at last weekend’s inaugural ATX Television Festival in Austin.

However, the actor will not be elevated to a full-time series regular, something he and the show initially discussed. “There are so many regulars that I think that they would probably drop people before they’d add people,” he explained — a fact that is actually OK by Ritter. Well, kinda.

“Basically, when you’re a recurring character, other jobs can come along,” he shared. “But it’s tough when you’re a recurring character on Parenthood, because nothing else looks as enticing… I do get the sense that they want to use me quite a bit next season, though.”

While Ritter was still in the dark as to how Sarah will respond to Mark’s proposal in Season 4, he did offer that “it’s safe to say that she doesn’t just flat out say, ‘No, I never want to see you again.’ I think she’ll either say ‘yes,’ or she’ll be concerned about some of the issues we haven’t dealt with yet.”

Like their differing desires on the show’s titular topic, perhaps? “I would imagine that would come up again, just because it’s such a big thing to talk about,” he mused.

All that said, Ritter is thrilled to be sticking around for the ride. “The great thing about Jason Katims and that whole writing staff is no matter what I imagine my dream is [for Mark], they always think of something better and more beautiful.”

Parenthood: Lauren Graham on Season 3 Finale-TVLine

Here's an article by TVLine's Megan Masters which gives some scoop on the season 3 finale of Parenthood that airs tonight straight from Lauren Graham. Lauren Graham talks about what will be happening with Sarah and Mark in the season finale in the following excerpt from the article:


“It’s not like that!” the actress responds, passionately, when asked if the season ends, as it seems, with Sarah once again single. “Everybody likes these two together, including everyone here [on Parenthood], and this relationship became oddly real. Jason [Ritter] is a member of our family, so it’s a funny position where we’re all hopeful for these two… but in a way, it’s a win/lose situation.”

Graham is of course referring to the fact that while selfishly she would love to see her scene partner stick around forever, Ritter is now at work on an NBC drama pilot with Parenthood boss Jason Katims. And given that the future of said project won’t be determined by NBC until mid-May, Graham maintains there is still hope for Mark and Sarah.

“Rather than make a definitive decision [in the finale], there is a question left in the air. Their relationship is not completely resolved,” she shares. “Without giving it all away, I wouldn’t say theirs is a hopeless situation. We wouldn’t do that to fans.

“I just really wanted to be truthful to these people,” Graham continues, “and I would say that we are. I fought for the issues that [come between them] to be real — it couldn’t just come out of nowhere, because Mark and Sarah adore each other.”

Graham calls the couple’s impending difficulties “complicated,” noting that, “It’s truthful to their age difference and where they are in life — and without being a total about-face in the storyline… Sarah has this fear of not being able to give Mark this thing that he wants — a baby — and also a fear that maybe he isn’t really ready for it anyway.”

Parenthood: Season 3 Episode 7 Lauren Graham and Jason Ritter Preview-TVLine

Parenthood‘s Sarah and Mark (played by Lauren Graham and Jason Ritter) seem like the perfect, happy couple, so naturally, the show’s writers plan to send them through a romantic obstacle course, of sorts. In tonight’s episode (airing on NBC at 10/9c), Mark will face a lot of Bravermans, but the biggest challenge comes from someone outside the family.

TVLine caught up with Lauren Graham and Jason Ritter to talk about their characters’ romance, the challenges Sarah’s ex Seth (John Corbett) poses, and some extra treats for fans of Gilmore Girls and The Event.

TVLINE | What’s going on in Tuesday night’s episode? Jason, there are some pictures of your character out with all the ladies.
LAUREN GRAHAM | [Mark] gets introduced to the family at a big party that my brothers are having to launch their music studio. That’s a sweet part of this week’s show – that I’m all excited for him to meet my family. He’s not, like, partying with the ladies. [Laughs]

RITTER | It’s tough. Exes are a very difficult part of any relationship. They’re harder to deal with than some new person that someone might be attracted to or not; there’s no history there, no old love there. So it’s difficult, especially because here’s someone who’s having a real problem with alcohol and now they’ve decided to get sober. So they’re returning to the person that they were when…
GRAHAM | We were connected.
RITTER | Exactly.

TVLINE | Is it going to strengthen Mark and Sarah’s relationship, as a result, or uncover some weaknesses in it?
GRAHAM | Both of those probably.
RITTER | Any time there’s any kind of pressure on anything, it changes it. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes for the worse. Sometimes for the medium between those two. [Graham laughs]

TVLINE | Does Sarah have romantic feelings for Seth?
GRAHAM | It’s confusing. I’m not sure she’s sure. There’s a lot in not having had him healthy for so much of the marriage. I think there’s a fantasy, for her kids, wishing that their father was in the picture. And maybe that spills over a little bit into some feelings for him. I’m not sure she knows exactly what it is.




TVLINE | Mark’s been really understanding and calm about everything so far. Is he going to lose his cool soon?
RITTER | He does start standing up for himself a little bit more. He’s always been at least clear with her about what makes him uncomfortable and what he’s not excited about. She at least knows that he’s trying. He just really loves her a lot. He loves her that much, so he’s trying as hard as he can. He’s not going to throw away a whole relationship because it’s difficult. It’s tough for him, but…
GRAHAM | Or are you going to punch [Seth]? [Laughs]
RITTER | I would love to get one good clock in there and then run fast. [Laughs] You get to see the true mettle of a person when they’re challenged like that.

TVLINE | Jason, how long are you around for this season?
RITTER | Neither of us know. I’m happy to say it’s already been longer than I initially thought. That’s really, really nice. They’re giving our relationship an opportunity to get into more complicated areas, instead of just having to break it off because it gets weird and complicated.

NBC Increases Parenthood‘s Season 3 Order

TVLINE | Lauren, does it give you some anxiety knowing that Jason’s gig is probably temporary and Sarah’s likely going to have her heart broken?
GRAHAM | It does give me some anxiety because at this point, I’m so invested in this character, I personally don’t want to start over. And I’m not sure how they would split us up because it is so positive. Your guess is as good as mine.

TVLINE | Jason, at what point should fans move on from the idea of an Event reunion movie or miniseries?
GRAHAM | At the same point that the Gilmore Girls people should – never!
RITTER | [Laughs] That is still a possibility. When I hear for sure that it’s not happening, I will let it go myself, and I will spread the word to let it go. But until then… Every time I’ve started to feel like it’s not going to happen, I get a little email from one of the producers of it, saying, “We’re still working on it, so don’t give up.”
