Once Upon a Time: Scoop on Maleficent's return in the second half of season 4 from Entertainment Weekly's Natalie Abrams

Here's some scoop on Once Upon a Time from Entertainment Weekly's Natalie Abrams' The Spoiler Room column, which was posted on 12/12/14.

How the heck does Maleficent keep coming back to life on Once Upon a Time? — Dina
We’ll get the answer to that very soon. “We did say she had a spell on her that made her be preserved in whatever form she was in, be that ash, be that dragon,” executive producer Edward Kitsis reminds viewers. “So, we know that she was exploded into ash. How she gets brought back will be an entire episode.”

Once Upon a Time: Scoop on Maleficent's return from Entertainment Weekly's Natalie Abrams

Here's some scoop on Once Upon a Time from Entertainment Weekly's Natalie Abrams' The Spoiler Room column, which was posted on 9/26/14.

I want some scoop on Maleficent returning to Once Upon a Time. — Ryan
It should come as no surprise that Maleficent’s storyline will have a connection to Aurora, a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty—which in turn brings the hope that Mulan might also return. But Aurora isn’t the only character who should be worried about Maleficent’s return. The sorceress will not be too pleased about Regina having locked her up beneath Storybrooke. “They were frenemies,” executive producer Edward Kitsis reminds everyone, noting that what’s in store for the second half of the season will be revealed in the winter finale.

Once Upon a Time: Emilie de Ravin and Kristin Bauer van Straten to Return-TVLine

According to TVLine's Vlada Gelman, Emilie de Ravin will be reprising the role of Belle later this season on Once Upon a Time . Also, Kristin Bauer van Straten will reprising the role of Maleficent in an episode that's scheduled to air in May. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Emilie de Ravin's upcoming return to the show:

De Ravin, who plays Rumpel’s true love Belle, will reprise her role in an episode airing next month. While her fairy tale character was recently seen giving love advice to dwarf Grumpy, it’s been a while since viewers have glimpsed her Storybrooke counterpart, who has been locked up in a ward by Regina.

“She’s sitting there [alive], with the person who loves her [Rumpelstiltskin] not realizing it, and he would be someone I would not want to piss off,” co-creator Eddie Kitsis previously teased.

My thoughts: I'm really excited that Emilie de Ravin will be making another appearance on the show. I'm hoping that we'll get to learn more about her Storybrooke counterpart and that Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin will be reunited with her at some point in the future. As for Kristin Bauer van Straten's return, I wasn't all that crazy about the character Maleficent, so I'm not too excited to see her again.

'Once Upon a Time's' Kristin Bauer: Maleficent, Evil Queen are 'frenemies'-From Inside the Box-Zap2it

kristin-bauer-once-upon-a-t.jpg"True Blood's" Kristin Bauer is stepping into a magical world of a different sort on Sunday night (Oct. 30) when she guest stars on "Once Upon a Time" as the evil Maleficent. She tells Zap2it it's just a glimpse into the long history between her character and the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla).

Our first question for Kristin was whether Maleficent is working with the Evil Queen or against her - and we kinda hit the nail on the head.

"That is exactly what we're going to find out. That's totally the question," laughs Bauer. "I was utterly fascinated by these powerful people - how they at times work together when their purposes align and at times play a real chess game of how to get out of the other what they want. And then what happens when it doesn't go well and then maybe they align forces again against a greater evil. It's a fascinating world."

We have a theory that perhaps in fairytale world, the Evil Queen and Maleficent are perhaps related. A little evil sibling rivalry. Bauer says we don't yet know, but this episode provides a sneak peek into their history.

"We get a little glimpse into the long-standing relationship, friendship, frenemies. The feeling I got between the two of us was this is a very interesting relationship," says Bauer. "In the pilot, we see that the Evil Queen is the top of the heap and all of a sudden we meet her frenemy. You get a real glimpse into a long relationship."

Maleficent has yet to be revealed in the town of Storybrooke, though.

"I've been imagining who she would be. With these writers, it'll be something interesting, like a gardener, the town hairdresser, something totally unexpected," Bauer says.

When we say maybe the town seamstress, since "Sleeping Beauty" featured all the spinning wheels, Bauer laughs, "That's good! Right?! That is so good!"

Hopefully they'll have Bauer return so we can find out. She hopes so as well.

"I can only hope to come back because I love the concept of this show. I had so much fun playing with Lana. This is her world that I've stepped into and she was so helpful. She's really fabulous," says Bauer.

"Once Upon a Time" airs Sunday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

Kristin Bauer van Straten Previews Season 1 Once Upon a Time Guest Spot-TVLine

Once Upon a Time will cast its spell again this Sunday (8/7c, ABC), and helping deliver the magic is one of our favorite TV scene-stealers, Kristin Bauer van Straten.

The True Blood actress is bringing to life the iconic fairy tale villainess Maleficent in the series’ Enchanted Forest, and while some actresses might voice concerns over one-too-many similar roles, Bauer van Straten does not. In fact, she tells TVLine she loved the part because of its similarities to her Bon Temps badass, Pam De Beaufort.

Here, find out what else Bauer van Straten loved about the character, whether or not she’ll return for another showdown with the Evil Queen, and more.

TVLINE | Talk a little about going from playing the outlandish Pam on True Blood to the evil sorceress Maleficent on Once Upon a Time.
It was really fun! True Blood fans and Once Upon a Time fans are similar because they’re similar types of shows; it’s a fantastical world that we can escape to. Can I just say that my evil-bitch typecasting is the most awesome thing and I hope it lasts forever. [Laughs] I also had so much fun with Lana Parrilla, who plays the Evil Queen. You never know when you go on a new show who you’re going to get along with, but with her it was just game on! We had a blast. I also got to do green screen work to a huge extent (see the photo above) and I can’t wait to see it put together.

TVLINE | Lana Parrilla is so good, especially in the Enchanted Forest scenes where we’ll see the two of you together. There’s got to be tons of fun, bitchy back-and-forth.
Totally! What’s fun about characters like this is playing the different levels and colors of it. With Pam on True Blood — and maybe I’m just losing my mind — I’ve started to see that she’s the only one telling the truth. She has more integrity than most people in Bon Temps. You really start seeing the other side of the coin, which makes it fun to play. But yes, Maleficent and the Evil Queen are frenemies. This is a very longstanding relationship; they both have something that the other one wants and they have to be very crafty and clever in trying to get that thing. It’s a real chess game.

TVLINE | This role was actually offered to you at the last minute. How, if at all, did that time crunch impact your prep in taking on such an iconic character?
It was actually similar to what happened with my True Blood casting, which was also short notice. For me, it’s almost better if I don’t have too much time to think about it; that way I feel like I go with my first instinct. I enjoy playing things a little bit under — I try to find the person behind the evilness. I usually give myself a whole backstory that may or may not be true. [Laughs] But it doesn’t really make a difference because you’re doing something more than playing “evil.” Also, I had a really good helper there with Lana. She’s been doing this for awhile and she knew that world really well… Look, if you play tennis with Roger Federer, you’re just a better tennis player. [Laughs]

TVLINE | What can you tease about what Maleficent has that the Evil Queen so desperately wants?
It’s kinda cute. I think of it like a clothing swap with little girls: One wants the silly pink sweater and one wants the red slippers, but you can’t just come out and say that. [Laughs] Each one of these women has made a scientific discovery that can help them get what they want, and now the other one has to try and figure out how to get it — under the guise of “having tea.” It’s just really good writing. When you get really good writing, you don’t have to play the most obvious thing; you get to play around a bit.

TVLINE | The show’s producers have said that the story is certainly left open for Maleficent to return in the future. If she makes it to Storybrooke next time around, what do you think she would be like?
You know, I was trying to figure that out…. I kept thinking she’d be the town librarian because I want something that’s totally opposite of who she is. I don’t know why we always think the librarian has some sort of opposite personality, because I don’t think they ever do in real life — but there’s actually a librarian who runs one of the True Blood fan sites, so maybe there is some evidence there. [Laughs] Either way, it would need to be something really innocuous.

TVLINE | So, you’re definitely open to reprising this role if your schedule allows?
Yes, it would be so fun!

Once Upon a Time Taps True Blood Scene-Stealer Kristin Bauer van Straten as Evil Witch-TVLine

Once Upon a Time has wrangled Bon Temps’ bitchiest vamp to portray one of the fairy tale world’s most infamous villains.

Kristin Bauer van Straten — who plays the scene-stealing Pam De Beaufort on HBO’s True Blood — has landed a one-episode guest spot on ABC’s whimsical drama as Maleficent, the evil sorceress from Sleeping Beauty. The role originally belonged to Paula Marshall (Californication), but TVLine has learned that producers decided to go in a different direction.

The actress first revealed the casting news via Twitter, excitedly announcing, “Packing for Vancouver – to shoot #OnceUponaTime – new fantastical TV show.”

Little is known about what Bauer van Straten’s version of Maleficent will look like (or who she’ll play in the series’ amnesic alterna-world, Storybrooke), but we can confirm that she is slated to appear in Episode 2, which airs on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 8/7c.

Bauer van Straten joins a Season 1 guest cast that also includes Alan Dale (Lost) as Prince Charming’s pops, Jessy Schram (Falling Skies) as the glass slipper-missing Cinderella, David Anders (The Vampire Diaries) as a small town doc, and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) as the sidekick to Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen.
