New Girl: Jess knows exactly what she wants…and it’s Nick! Yay! (My thoughts on episode 2x19 “Quick Hardening Caulk”)

In case I haven’t already made it perfectly clear in my previous reviews for New Girl, I think that the show is on a major creative streak this season, and that streak once again continues in this episode. It was definitely very risky of Elizabeth Meriwether and the rest of the writers to have Jess and Nick kiss each other for the first time when they were basically right at the halfway point of the second season, but I feel like it was definitely the right decision to have them kiss at that point, and the show has been flying even higher than ever before creatively ever since, if you ask me.

From where I’m standing, the episode had to end with Jess and Nick making out given the increasing sexual tension that developed between them as the episode progressed. I think the ending of the episode would most likely have fallen flat if they hadn’t kissed. The buildup to them making out at the end of the episode was very well done since the sexual tension that’s been brewing between them since the show began and especially so far this season seemed to reach an all-time high in this episode.

The whole thing with Jess struggling with her feelings for Nick really started to intensify when Nick was telling her, Winston and Schmidt about how he had an idea for the bar to have a guy’s night, which his new boss, a woman named Shane, apparently loved. Nick said that it could potentially lead to a promotion if things with the guy’s night went well. Jess’ feelings became even harder for her to ignore as the episode progressed due to Nick acting surprisingly mature for him, which led to her acting very weird around him. At one point in the episode, Nick asked Jess for a ride to the hardware store for supplies for the bar’s guy’s night, which caused Jess to flip out on Nick when he mentioned that he also wanted to stop and get a salad and that he was thinking of taking a vitamin.

Jess’ struggle with her feelings for Nick continued while they were at the hardware store and she saw him yanking a chain and then holding a big pipe. She ended up running off and reminded herself that she had apparently once walked in on Nick masturbating to a mail order steak catalogue, which I think is just…weird. Anyway, Jess was soon hit in the jaw by a big pipe, knocking her out.

The writers left out quite a few details about what happened after Jess got knocked out by the pipe at the hardware store, because the next time that we saw Jess and Nick, Nick was putting Jess in bed so she could rest after having apparently been treated by a doctor and was bringing her some hot soup. Hilarity ensued as Jess, who was all whacked out on pain medication, started hitting on Nick and repeatedly told him that she wanted to have sex with him. It was very clear that Nick was very confused by Jess’ behavior and was trying his best to rebuff her rather aggressive advances as he was attempting to get her to rest. One thing led to another and Nick ended up getting hit by Jess and burnt his hand in the hot soup that he had gotten for Jess and was also knocked onto the ground in the process. I personally loved the ending of that scene when Jess was asking Nick to get her some mustard, oblivious to the fact that he was rolling around the floor in pain.

New Girl: Get ready to witness a kiss that’s so hot that it should probably only be allowed to be shown on premium cable (My thoughts on episode 2x15 “Cooler”)

Let me begin this post by saying that as a hardcore Jess/Nick shipper, this is the episode that I’ve been dying to see pretty much since New Girl began. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again; I’ve always loved the way the writers have handled the will they or won’t they get together element of Jess and Nick’s relationship. Personally, I’ve always found Jess and Nick’s relationship rather refreshing and original when you compare the writing for their relationship to couples on other TV shows, such as Ross and Rachel on Friends.

If you ask me, it was very risky on the writers’ part to have Jess and Nick kiss each other fairly early on in the show’s run, but after seeing how the whole episode played out I think it really paid off to have them kiss in this episode. I thought it was handled very well. As I mentioned in this post (Why Jess and Nick's [SPOILER] almost didn't happen), the creator of the show, Elizabeth Meriwether, had originally planned to have Jess and Schmidt be the ones who went into the other room to make out, and not Jess and Nick when they were playing a new version of the game True American. I’m not sure how that would have impacted the Jess and Nick material in this episode if the writers had gone that route, but I’m glad that they changed it to Jess and Nick being the ones who ended up being sent into the other room to make out. The idea of Jess and Schmidt kissing each other in any situation just seems beyond weird to me, and I’m not sure that I’d want to see that.

Nick absolutely cracked me up in every scene that he was in, especially when it came to him wearing the women’s trench coat that he found and the way he and everybody else was talking about it. Nick thought that he looked really cool wearing the trench coat and kept saying that it made him feel very confident, but everybody else just kept reminding him that it was a women’s trench coat. The way that he was acting about the trench coat in this episode was classic Nick, and it once again reminded me why I think Jake Johnson is the true breakout star of New Girl.

The whole bit with Nick and the trench coat wasn’t the only thing that I found rather amusing when it came to Nick in this episode though. Nick and Schmidt met a girl named Holly at a bar who was basically aroused by sadness, which just sounds beyond weird to me, but I suppose there are probably people in the world who are really like that. Personally, I thought that Brooklyn Decker did a great job of playing the role of Holly and I really liked how she played Holly’s fetish for sad men in such a comedic way. Anyway, Nick and Schmidt spent most of the episode trying to one-up each other when it came to convincing her that they had the saddest life, which I thought was hilarious. It actually kind of reminded me of the first episode of the TV show Go On and the whole “March Sadness” competition that Ryan came up with for the other people in the support group to play in order to decide which person in the group had the best sob story.

New Girl: Odette Annable Cast as Nick’s New Girlfriend-TVLine

Odette Annable New Girl Season 2

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Odette Annable has been cast in a potentially recurring guest-star role as a new love interest for Nick. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Annable's role:

Annable will portray Shane, a perky and preppy management school grad who is Nick’s new boss at the bar. Per the casting notice for the role, Shane “unabashedly” starts having a fling with her new charge.

Annable’s casting comes just days after Nick and Jess shared their first kiss.

Annable, whose credits also include Breaking In and Brothers & Sisters (opposite her real-life hubby Dave),  will soon kick off a multi-episode arc in Cinemax’s rookie drama Banshee.

My thoughts: This news combined with the news about Steve Howey being cast as a new love interest for Jess (Steve Howey Cast as a Love Interest For Jess) really makes me thinks that there's going to be a lot of drama that Jess and Nick will be dealing with in the aftermath of their kiss, which is sure to be interesting and perhaps frusttrating to watch at times. As much as I'd love to see Jess and Nick get together and just stay together, I definitely understand that the writers can't do that since they are only in the middle of New Girl's second season. Since this is a TV show and not real life where a couple can just get together and not get caught up in an on again/off again relatoionship that is drawn out for five seasons/years, if not longer, the writers have to come up with obstacles like bringing in Steve Howey and Odette Annable to play new love interests for Jess and Nick.

That being said, I liked Odette Annable on Brothers & Sisters, and I thought that she did a decent job in the episodes of House's final season that I've watched, so I'm definitely at least a little excited about this news. I wouldn't say that she's the best actress in the world though, but I like her enough as actress to at least keep an open mind about her playing a new love interest for Nick. Hopefully, I'll like Annable's character more than I liked Olivia Munn's character, Angie, who is definitely my least favorite out of all of Nick's love interests at the moment. I for one really liked Lizzy Caplan's character, Julia, from last season as a love interest for Nick. Part of the reason why liked Lizzy Caplan's character, Julia, so much was simply because I was a big fan of Lizzy's acting in the movie Mean Girls, but I digress. That being said, I'm optimistic that I will like her character as a love interest for Nick, because the description of her character sounds very interesting to me.

House: Scoop on the series finale from E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos' Spoiler Chat Daily

Here's some scoop on House from Kristin Dos Santos' Spoiler Chat Daily for Friday 5/4/12.

Jess: You've been spoiling us with House finale spoilers! Can I get just one more?
Of course! But you should know it's only because we are feeling extra-nostalgic for this show. When we stopped Odette Annable on the carpet at the House series finale party, she told us that fans will definitely be satisfied with how it all ends. "I keep saying, as a fan myself, I'm really, really excited for everyone else to see it, because I was very, very happy," she says. "[At] our last table read, I just had a really big smile on my face and that's exactly how I would've wanted to see it end."

Breaking In: Season 2 Cast Update: Odette Annable, Michael Rosenbaum-TVLine

The Contra Security workplace will look a bit different when Fox’s Breaking In breaks out its second season.

Confirmed to return as series regulars to the caper comedy — which was canceled back in May but then plucked from the ashes as a midseason replacement — are Christian Slater (as Contra boss man Oz), Bret Harrison (Cameron) and Alphonso McAuley (Cash).

Plus, as TVLine exclusively reported last month, Emmy winner Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) is coming on board as a Season 2 regular, playing Oz’s own boss.

As for the rest of the ensemble: TVLine has learned that Odette Annable, who during Breaking In‘s brief canceled state joined the cast of Fox’s House, will reprise her role of savvy, sexy Melanie in “multiple episodes” but not reclaim series regular status. Meanwhile, Michael Rosenbaum — who in Season 1 guest-starred as Mel’s doofus beau, Dutch – is not set to return, due to his preexisting commitment to direct a feature film that he wrote. However, we hear the Smallville alum could guest-star at some later point.

Breaking In kicks off its new season on March 6, airing Tuesdays at 8:30/7:30c between encore and new episodes of New Girl (while Glee is on hiatus).

Odette and Dave Annable Talk House, Breaking In and Starting a Family - E! Online

Odette Yustman, Dave Annable

Alert: A crazy charismatic and attractive child might be headed for this world.

TV faves Dave and Odette Annable aren't starting a family just yet, but they told us they plan to do so in the "near future."

"How much wine are you giving her tonight?" Dave Annable cracked when we met up with the newlyweds last night.

Odette is busy with her new role on House and the news that the show many believed to be dead, Breaking In, will be coming back to Fox.

So how will she be doing both shows? What is she doing on House? And why was Gilles Marini threatening to kick Dave's ass?

MORE: Is Fox Bringing Breaking In Back From the TV Graveyard?

Odette tells us she's shooting House now, and Breaking In will start up a little further down the road. So yes, she will be doing both shows.

"I can't share too much information," she tells us of House, "but I am going to be a new doctor on the team and I meet House [Hugh Laurie] at the prison. I'm a prison doctor and then I get recruited at some point in the season...I'm currently shooting that now. It's been such a dream and everybody is so wonderful there. I had a very warm welcoming so it's been great so far."

Dave's old Brothers & Sisters costar Gilles also attended the American Cancer Society dinner, which just so happened to be held on Dave's birthday.

"You know what we do in my martial arts?" Gilles says. "Whenever it's your birthday, we beat you up. And I'm going to have to find a way here to beat him up!"

Hey, as long as you're both shirtless.

Gilles also has a new show idea he wants to pitch: "Dave is one of the funniest men you could ever meet...A sitcom, with Dave and Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters) would be the proper idea. I would just come on as a guest star because I don't have that talent to be so funny. But Dave and Matthew Rhys together would be like a 10-year-long TV show that people would remember forever."

Network honchos, make it so!

As for that whole "starting a family" thing, Dave cracks, "We just had a friend come over with a 1½-year-old. So that pushed our timeline back just a little bit."

"Just a little," Odette laughed, adding, "We definitely—those are our plans [to have a baby] but we're enjoying being married right now. That's the most important thing, we're traveling a little bit, we're working...Not quite yet but in the near future. "

Also there at the dinner last night: the girl rumored to be George Clooney's new squeeze, Stacy Keibler.

It's Official: Fox's Breaking In Will Return With Second Season - TVLine

Leave it to a band of thieves to steal a spot on Fox’s schedule.

Breaking In, the caper comedy that premiered solidly this past spring but failed to score a berth on the network’s 2011-12 lineup announced in May, has officially secured a 13-episode order for a midseason return, to air in 2012.

Breaking In is a creatively vibrant and wildly adventurous comedy,” Fox president Kevin Reilly said in a statement Thursday. “We are looking forward to bringing it back for a second season and continuing our relationship with this incredibly talented cast and these fantastic creators – Adam Goldberg and Seth Gordon. We can’t wait to see where they take these characters next year.”

As part of the deal — which would actually pluck the Christian Slater-fronted series from the ashes a second time — Fox will also make a commitment to a comedy pitch by Breaking In co-creator Adam F. Goldberg, for a series described as an autobiographical take on growing up in the 1980s.

And what of Breaking beauty Odette Annable, who is joining House this season as a series regular? Per the terms of her deal to scrub in at the network’s medical drama, Annable can also appear on Breaking In. As such, the entire cast is expected to return.
