The Good Doctor: Scoop on the possibility of characters from House appearing on the show and more from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on The Good Doctor from this week's (Posted on 11/17/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: I’m loving The Good Doctor. Given that it is a David Shore show, is there any chance any House characters might at some point pop in for a cameo? —Matt
Ausiello: I doubt we’ll see any characters from House, since Universal owns those, but I would not be surprised at all if an actor from the original show were to check in at some point. (Robert Sean Leonard would fit in nicely at San Jose St. Bonaventure, no?) In the meantime, I hear one of the rookie hit’s full-time docs will be checking out in the near future, and his/her controversial onscreen exit — which may or may not stick — will set the stage for a big midseason storyline.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: TV’s funniest comedy is back! Sorry, Modern Family, but I’m not talking about you (My thoughts on the season 9 premiere: Episode 9x01 “The Gang Broke Dee”)

After waiting for what felt like an eternity, season nine of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is finally here and I’m happy to say that the season premiere definitely didn’t disappoint me for the most part. Right off the bat, I would like to say that I definitely liked this episode more than the season eight premiere (“Pop-Pop: The Final Solution”). Don’t get me wrong, I loved the season eight premiere, it’s just that I thought this episode was a slightly stronger season premiere for the show. One of the reasons why I love this episode so much is that while It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an ensemble show, this was essentially a Dee centric episode, and I tend to pretty much enjoy any episode that’s centered around Dee or episodes that are centered largely around Dee and perhaps one other character.

The episode opened with the guys watching Dee in horror as she was eating a cake that Charlie mentioned that he had previously thrown it out, while she was also smoking a cigarette and had also clearly not showered in several days. In typical fashion, Dennis, Charlie, Mac and Frank all started trying to make fun of her, saying that she looks like a bird. Only this time, Dee kept finishing their sentences since the guys have always pretty only primarily used the same set of insults and rude comments, much to the guys disappointment. After Dee finally left the bar, the guys came to the conclusion that they had “broken” Dee.

The guys quickly took it upon themselves to try and cheer Dee up in their own messed up way. Charlie, Mac and Frank believed the best way to cheer Dee up was to sign her up for an open mike night at a comedy club, figuring that since Dee didn’t seem to care about anything anymore that she won’t gag when she’s on stage and trying to do stand up like she usually does. Dennis disagreed with this plan, saying that he thought the best way to get Dee out of her funk was to find her a man to be with. Dennis being Dennis went about this in a very backhanded way, telling Dee that the guy would at best be simply average, if not below average. While I loved this episode for being such a Dee centric episode, I also loved all of the parts featuring Dennis, at times I enjoyed the parts of the episode with Dennis even more than I enjoyed the parts of the episode that were focused primarily on Dee. Glenn Howerton always does a fantastic job on the show, but I especially enjoyed his performance in this episode.

Charlie, Mac and Frank ended up being right when they thought Dee wouldn’t gag on stage now that she didn’t seem to care about anything. Her first stand up routine did start out a little rough though, because at first she was just standing in front of the microphone sighing heavily and acting completely out of it until somebody in the audience yelled at her to say something. Dee proceeded to lament about her life and how the joke always seems to be on her, and the audience apparently thought what she was saying was funny, because they were laughing. This also led to Dee’s catch phrase throughout the episode becoming, “I’m Sweet Dee, and the joke’s on me.”

Scandal: Lisa Edelstein to Guest-Star-TVLine

 

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Lisa Edelstein will be guest-starring in an upcoming episode of Scandal. Here's an excerpt from the article:

According to sources, Edelstein will play a client of Olivia Pope and Associate on the series, which is returning to a (mostly) case-of-the-week format in this season’s final nine episodes.

Edelstein’s post House gigs have included a run on The Good Wife, a guest stint on Elementary, and an arc on House of Lies‘ current second season.

My thoughts: I have say that I'm beyond excited about this news, because I'm a huge fan of Lisa Edelstein, especially when it comes to her acting on House. Plus, I'm also a huge fan of Scandal,  so I can't wait to see Lisa Edelstein on the show. I really feel like the show has been on fire this season, both creatively and in terms of the ratings. I'll admit that I didn't really get into watching Scandal until this past summer when I bought the season one DVD set so I could watch the entire season since I had only seen the first episode before that.

The first episode alone instantly got me hooked on the show. Scandal is a truly fantastic show, and I'm thrilled that more and more people have been discovering the show this season. As much as I loved the first season, I'm loving season two even more so far. I always thought that Shonda Rhimes was a genius storyteller when it came to her writing for Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, but I think that Scandal is her true masterpiece. If you're not already watching Scandal, then you definitely need to start watching the show immediately.

New Girl: Odette Annable Cast as Nick’s New Girlfriend-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Odette Annable has been cast in a potentially recurring guest-star role as a new love interest for Nick. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Annable's role:

Annable will portray Shane, a perky and preppy management school grad who is Nick’s new boss at the bar. Per the casting notice for the role, Shane “unabashedly” starts having a fling with her new charge.

Annable’s casting comes just days after Nick and Jess shared their first kiss.

Annable, whose credits also include Breaking In and Brothers & Sisters (opposite her real-life hubby Dave),  will soon kick off a multi-episode arc in Cinemax’s rookie drama Banshee.

My thoughts: This news combined with the news about Steve Howey being cast as a new love interest for Jess (Steve Howey Cast as a Love Interest For Jess) really makes me thinks that there's going to be a lot of drama that Jess and Nick will be dealing with in the aftermath of their kiss, which is sure to be interesting and perhaps frusttrating to watch at times. As much as I'd love to see Jess and Nick get together and just stay together, I definitely understand that the writers can't do that since they are only in the middle of New Girl's second season. Since this is a TV show and not real life where a couple can just get together and not get caught up in an on again/off again relatoionship that is drawn out for five seasons/years, if not longer, the writers have to come up with obstacles like bringing in Steve Howey and Odette Annable to play new love interests for Jess and Nick.

That being said, I liked Odette Annable on Brothers & Sisters, and I thought that she did a decent job in the episodes of House's final season that I've watched, so I'm definitely at least a little excited about this news. I wouldn't say that she's the best actress in the world though, but I like her enough as actress to at least keep an open mind about her playing a new love interest for Nick. Hopefully, I'll like Annable's character more than I liked Olivia Munn's character, Angie, who is definitely my least favorite out of all of Nick's love interests at the moment. I for one really liked Lizzy Caplan's character, Julia, from last season as a love interest for Nick. Part of the reason why liked Lizzy Caplan's character, Julia, so much was simply because I was a big fan of Lizzy's acting in the movie Mean Girls, but I digress. That being said, I'm optimistic that I will like her character as a love interest for Nick, because the description of her character sounds very interesting to me.

Creator David Shore would be the man to ask about that, and what do you know, we did! "Yeah, I don't know why not," he tells us about the possibility of doing a House movie. "I'm not going to say not to that, so sure. I don't have a plot yet." Can it just involve House and Wilson's adventures over the five months Wilson has left to live? And now we're crying again.

Olivia Wilde, whose character Thirteen plays a huge role in helping House (Hugh Laurie) deal with Wilson's (Robert Sean Leonard) treatment decision. It's a very moving scene—one of our favorite of the episode. And that's saying something because next week's episode packs a bone-crushing emotional punch.

"[At] our last table read, I just had a really big smile on my face and that's exactly how I would've wanted to see it end."

That's right, only a few people will know how House truly ends, but RSL did offer up this finale tease: "I think the fans will really like it. I think it's apt. House | As one might surmise, tonight’s episode, directed by Hugh Laurie, marks the beginning of the very end for House, as the titular doc and his BFF Wilson take an impromptu vacation together in the wake of the latter’s cancer diagnosis. “The very end of [last week's episode], through the one I [directed] and really up until the finale, is sort of one journey… and I hope, if we’ve done it right, a fairly tense one,” says Laurie. Both Laurie and scene partner Robert Sean Leonard agree that it’s fitting that their alter egos peel away in this episode, as the series nears its end. “[They] are the only two characters on the show who decide to be together,” Leonard points out. “House works for Cuddy, and the team works for House…. They all have no choice; they have to be together. But House and Wilson actually voluntarily spend time with one another, which is unique to their relationship in this group of people.”

Ausiello: After watching the promo for next week’s episode, my guess is she uses her unique POV as a person with a terminal illness to talk House and/or Wilson off a ledge in the wake of the latter’s grim diagnosis. For her part, Olivia Wilde would only conform that she “got to have scenes with both Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard, which is a dream for any actor.” And what about Shore’s “intervenes” tease? “I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s not quite that,” she shares. “But I did get to have scenes with each.”

Wow, David Shore is really scaring the crap out of people with his finale title: "Everybody Dies." Add that to last night's reveal that House's best friend has cancer, and we're a mess! How about we let Robert Sean Leonard talk about his thoughts on Wilson in the final episodes? "I think this show has constantly surprised me," he tells us. "I don't think it's important what happens as how it happens. I think it will be abrupt because I keep reading scripts thinking, 'When is [Shore] going to start tying stuff up?' But he's not big on tying stuff up. I think the door's going to slam and that's going to be it." Um, that doesn't make us feel any better. Brace yourself, House fans. This could get messy.

Carrie: House finale scoop! They wouldn't really kill off House would they?
We wish we could tell you either way, but the bosses at House have muzzles on everyone from the cast to craft services so no spoilers leak, but we can let Hugh Laurie tell you something and you can take from it what you want. "[Shore] is very suspicious of the clichéd end of melodrama, I think," he tells us. "And he would go out of his way not to create some sort of false, very heightened ending in which things blow up and people get married or don't or whatever, in which everything is sort of resolved. Because life isn't like that. [The ending] may be tied up, but it'll more be stapled up. I don't think there'll be any bows." Things that make you go, "hmmm…"

Ausiello: Series creator David Shore hints that the title of the episode “could have multiple meanings,” adding that the Hugh Laurie-directed hour is “very House-Wilson centric. House really isn’t involved [with] the patient. House and Wilson are off doing their own thing, which is great to have Hugh directing that because [it means] he’s not in every single scene so that makes it a little easier.”
