Ausiello: The Criminal Minds vet guest stars as “an angry IT lady whose office is the [Greendale] basement — and she doesn’t have a parking spot,” Brewster tells us. “Jonathan Banks and Alison Brie (as Hickey and Annie) come to me to finagle a favor, and it becomes this ‘quid pro quo’ situation where I then try to get something out of them.”

Ausiello: It depends on how easily one is excited. At the close of the milestone episode, during which Paget Brewster’s Prentiss is fetched from London to pitch in on a crisis, ”There’s a moment where Hotch asks her, ‘How much longer do we have you?’” showrunner Erica Messer shares. “And there’s this look he gives to her that makes you feel like if she was around any longer, maybe they would have grabbed a bite to eat, by themselves.” OK, I sense that at least 37 of you just got excited.

I tried to sneak your question by Thomas Gibson during this week’s Q&A, but he dodged it like the pro he is. “Paget [Brewster] will be there, but I won’t say how,” he hedged. Even teasier, he mused: “And hopefully we’ll see her again…?” All told, Gibson describes the milestone episode as “a gift to fans, and we’re as happy Paget’s coming back as they are.”

Criminal Minds: Star Paget Brewster Leaving-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Paget Brewster is leaving Criminal Minds at the end of the season to pursue other projects. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details from Brewster herself regarding her reasons for leaving the show at the end of the season:



“After six wonderful years playing Emily Prentiss, I have decided it’s time for me to move on,” Brewster (whose Minds’ deal expires in May) said in a statement to our sister site, Deadline.com. “As much as I will miss my Criminal Minds family, I am excited about the future and other opportunities.”

Per Deadline, Brewster’s decision to leave came after CBS and ABC Studios denied a request she made to enter pilot season with the hope of landing another half-hour comedy project. Last year she was cast in NBC’s My Life as an Experiment, which did not get picked up to series — paving the way for her to return to Minds this season (something Brewster was not entirely happy about). ”I had another year on my contract that I didn’t know about,” she recently told TVGuide.com, “so I had to come back! I said, ‘Hey, I kinda want an apology and maybe a raise.’ And they were like, ‘No, we’ll sue you!’ The whole thing was, unfortunately, a mess. It was dumb.”



In the article Michael Ausiello also mentions that Thomas Gibson, Joe Mantegna, Shemar Moore and A.J. Cook, have already signed new deals for a potential Season 8.

My thoughts: I'll definitely miss Paget Brewster next season, because I do like her character. However, Brewster leaving isn't the end of the world to me because Hotch, Dr. Spencer Reid, Garcia and Morgan are my favorite characters. If one of them left the show, I'd be really sad.

Criminal Minds Duo Weigh In on Hotch/Prentiss Romance Buzz-TVLine

Write about CBS’ Criminal Minds (airing Wednesdays at 9/8c) — any story about it, really — and a small sect of fans is sure to surface throwing their weight behind a someday romance between BAU agents Hotch (played by Thomas Gibson) and Prentiss (Paget Brewster).


“They have good chemistry and look great together, and she could bring out a less serious side to him,” one TVLine reader recently commented. “I want to see my Hotch have some fun.”

Another reader chimed in, “The writers could get a lot of creative, intriguing material from a Hotch/Prentiss coupling,” while a third was a bit more extreme with her investment in the would-be coupling, declaring, “If the writers don’t put Hotch and Prentiss together in Season 7 it will be a travesty. They deserve to be together.”

Perhaps more than ever, given how Hotch was one of only two people entrusted with the secret of Emily’s faked death.

Yet at least two factors might keep the Criminal Minds coworkers from ever broaching a workplace romance. For one, Hotch’s ex-wife was killed by a serial killer not two calendar years ago. There’s also the matter of while it’s one thing to have a lunch date with Lenny, the guy who drives the delivery van at your flower shop, it’s another to mix pleasure with a business that is so not conducive to canoodling.

“I’ve read [about some fans' want for a romance] and I don’t know how to respond to it,” Paget Brewster recently shared with TVLine. “I understand it on the one hand, because in the real FBI, people work so closely and are only around each other, so chances are that sooner or later they date each other. In some ways, it’s human nature.”

But on the other hand — and this is a valid point — “The idea that Hotch and I might be fooling around in a roundtable room when children are dying somewhere is really not appealing,” Brewster notes. “It’s a really hard line to ride, so I don’t know if they’ll ever write that. I really don’t.”

Thomas Gibson was similarly bearish on the idea when we ran it by him moments later, responding, “No, no, no…. Not unless it was one of those drunken evenings between Hotch and Prentiss.” (Yeah, one of those evenings. As if!)

Besides, Hotch is not the sort “to get involved with anybody he works with,” he contends. “Come on, he can’t do that!”

“That being said…,” Gibson added, “we’ll see.”

Emily Prentiss may wish she could have stayed “dead” once her true fate is revealed to the entire BAU team in the Criminal Minds Season 7 premiere (airing Wednesday at 9/8c, CBS).

Setting the table for her character’s comeback, Paget Brewster tells TVLine, “The reason that I stayed dead is so [terrorist Ian] Doyle wouldn’t attack these people that I care about. But I have to come out of hiding to protect someone else I care abou,t and keep them from being harmed.”

Alas, once the full BAU team is debriefed on the shocking sitch, “They’re all mad at me,” Brewster says, “and I know I gotta face it.”

Technically, not all of her coworkers have a beef. After all, JJ and Hotch were in on the ruse — in fact, A.J. Cook tells us, “You find out in one of the early episodes that [JJ and Emily] were actually in contact this whole time.”

But for others on the team, “They were lied to, and in Morgan’s case, I died in front of him as far as he knew,” Brewster says. “So it’s very difficult to just pop up like, ‘Hey guys! Sorrrry.’ Some of them have emotions that they have to go through.”



Explaining Morgan’s individual anger, Shemar Moore says, “When he feels that he loses Prentiss [in the March episode 'Lauren'], he takes the hit for that. It’s hard for him to let it go, because he really believes he could have done something different, had he been there 30 seconds sooner. So as much as he’s relieved [she's alive], he kind of feels betrayed because I thought we were a team. I thought we were a family. Why would you allow my life to get turned upside down with this secret?”

Joe Mantegna, who plays Rossi, applauds the writers’ decision to allow a bit of anger in those who believed their colleague was murdered. “We don’t just wash it over and pretend like it never happened, so yeah, there’ll be a little hell to pay,” he notes with a laugh. But in the end, “It’s all positive. I think our fans will appreciate the intelligent way we deal with it.”

Ultimately, it’s up to Hotch to compel Morgan to lick his emotional wounds, saying, “It was a decision that had to be made, and we made it. Get over it!” And once it’s gotten over, the foundation is laid for a rich run of episodes, with new textures among the happily reunited team members (including JJ, who herself popped back up in the May finale).

“It’s good stuff to chew on for the first part of the season, but I think everything’s going to be OK,” Thomas Gibson assures fans. “We’re just kind of re-energized with everybody being back together again.” (With reporting by Vlada Gelman)
