The Goonies vet will play a former high school chum of Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Sheriff Hopper’s (David Harbour) who now works as the manager of the local RadioShack. Series co-creator Ross Duffer says the role will show off “a different side” of the actor, before raving that Astin “killed it. He made the part so interesting. He made us write such a better character.” And don’t just take his word for it. Adds the EP: “The few people who have seen [Season 2] are just raving about him.”

Alphas: Scoop on episode 2x04 "When Push Comes to Shove" and scoop on Sean Astin's guest arc from TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich

Here's some scoop on Alphas from TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich's weekly column Matt's Inside Line for the week of 7/27/12.

Alphas | Lord of the Rings vet Sean Astin’s two-episode arc doesn’t arrive until October, but according to Laura Mennell, it will be worth the wait. In fact, his Alpha is among her favorite newbies of the season. “Sean has a really cool character, one who has the ability to be able to retain the memories of other people,” Nina’s portrayer shares. “When I started reading that script, I was like, ‘Oh wow!’ And he’s such a phenomenal actor, so… it’ll be exciting to see what he does.” Mennell also sings the praises of Katie Douglas, the ingenue who plays Young Nina in Episode 4. “Azita [Ghanizada, Rachel] was like, ‘Why aren’t you playing teenage Nina?’ But when I saw the girl they cast, I saw why. She basically looks 13, so that might have been a stretch for me!”

Exclusive: Franklin & Bash Snags Sean Astin For Super-Powered Guest Stint-TVLine

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s onetime Goonie Sean Astin playing a poor man’s Superman on Franklin & Bash.

The Lord of the Rings vet has signed on to guest star in an episode of the TNT legal dramedy as a college security guard who dons a cape and tights by night to fight campus crime under the name Viper.

When he’s accused of killing a so-called culprit, he retains Franklin and Bash to defend him.

Astin will appear during the show’s upcoming second season. Other Season 2 guest stars include Jane Seymour and Peter Weller.
