I have to say that I’ve been thoroughly enjoying season nine so far, and I’m as addicted to watching Grey’s Anatomy as I’ve always been, if not more than I was before. I
absolutely loved this episode; all of the storylines in this episode were great
in my personal opinion. Although, that quickly brings me to the one complaint
that I have with this episode. While I liked all of the storylines in this episode,
at the same time I also thought that this episode had too many storylines in
it. It definitely felt jam packed with various plots and subplots and the
episode just felt extremely cluttered as a whole.
I’ve found the
whole storyline with the plane crash survivors very interesting so far.
Although, I have to admit that I found some of the lawyer’s thinking regarding
the lawsuit rather ridiculous. First off, when Derek asked where all of the
money for the settlement was going to come from one of the lawyers told them
that they were apparently planning to go after Jerry (The pilot) for some of
the money. Meredith and Cristina objected to this since he was stranded out in
the woods with them and was paralyzed in the plane crash, and I have to say
that I agree with them. Given the fact the fact he wasn’t drunk or high when he
was flying the plane and he was also injured in the crash, I think he’s just as
entitled to the settlement as the others are. However, that wasn’t the most
ridiculous thing that the lawyers said
That being said,
I feel it would be appropriate for me to make a bullet point list of all the
storylines in this episode. Here are all of the storylines that were featured
in this episode in no particular order:
- Meredith, Derek, Callie, Owen and Christina continue to meet with lawyers regarding seeking a settlement for the plane crash
- Derek arguing with Callie about trying to repair the damage that was done to his hand in the plane crash
- Cristina returning to work at Seattle Grace and supervising new interns
- Alex trying to buy Meredith’s old house and arguing with her about getting minor issues with the house repaired
- Jo (One of the interns) treating a man who works as a Santa Claus and was repeatedly vomits on her throughout the episode
- Jo and the other interns gossiping about Alex
- Bailey trying to convince Arizona to help her treat a patient
- Jackson and April continuing their fling, but Jackson gets upset when April constantly compares them having sex to terrible things
- Jackson dealing with the fact that he keeps getting emails from Richard and his mother that are meant to be sent to the two of them and not him
I apologize if
I’ve omitted any storylines that were featured in the episode from my list,
because there really were a lot of storylines to keep track of. It’s also
impossible for me to comment on each of them, but I’m going to try and comment
on the storylines that I liked the most.
During the
meeting with the lawyers, the subject of Derek’s hand being injured came up and
after Callie initially said that since the first surgery that she did on his
hand didn’t work he might not ever be able to operate again, he lashed out at
her and blamed her for the surgery not working. However, at the end of the
episode Callie told him and the lawyers that there’s still more that could be
done to fix Derek’s hand. I have to say that I’ve found this storyline very
interesting given the fact that Derek has always been one of my favorite
characters on the show and also because I know how important a surgeon’s hands
are to them and being able to have a successful career. It will be interesting
to see what happens with that. If Derek ends up never being able to operate
again it would definitely take the character in a very different direction.
In the end, it
turns out that the lawyers weren’t interested in going after Jerry for the
settlement after all. Instead, they want to go after Seattle Grace hospital for
money because they were the ones who sent them to Boise on that plane. I think
that it’s just beyond idiotic that the lawyers want to go after the hospital
just because they sent them on that plane. Unless the hospital had them go on
the plane knowing that it had mechanical problems, which wasn’t the case, suing
the hospital for the plan crash just seems beyond idiotic in my opinion. While
I really like this storyline at the moment, I hope the writers aren’t planning
to stretch out the whole lawsuit storyline until the end of the season. That
would be too long to carry this storyline on for, in my opinion.
The storyline
with Bailey trying to convince Arizona to help her with a patient that she was
treating was definitely one of my top favorite storylines in this episode. Bailey
and Arizona have always been two of my favorite characters on the show, so I
usually enjoy their storylines. It was especially fun to see the two of them
have a storyline together in this episode though. Arizona was initially
reluctant to help Bailey with her patient, especially after she struggled to
just walk to the door with her new prosthetic leg only to see that the medical
chart that Bailey had told her that she would send over to hers’ and Callie’s
place wasn’t there. I have to say that I really liked that scene, and I thought
that Jessica Capshaw gave a very moving performance in that scene despite the
scene not having any dialogue.
However, it
turns out that Bailey intentionally never had anyone take the chart to Arizona,
which she thought would prompt Arizona to come to the hospital, and her plan
worked. The scene where Callie watches Arizona and Bailey talking about the
patient that Bailey was treating from a distance is definitely one of my
favorite scenes from the episode. Arizona coming to the hospital and walking
around the hospital with her new prosthetic leg was definitely a big moment in
her storyline this season, and I just wish that Callie had been by her side
when she went to the hospital given all of the tension between them so far this
season.
Alex has always
been one of my favorite characters on the show from the very beginning, and I
feel like he has perhaps had the most interesting character development
throughout the show’s run. He started out as a very rude and arrogant character
who frequently acted like an asshole, but I’ve always felt like the most
interesting development and growth that he has had as a character started in
season two when Addison put him under her service as punishment for being rude
to her and then he went on to specialize in pediatric surgery after that is
something I feel has continually helped Alex to evolve as a character.
That being said,
I feel like his storyline in this episode once again showed how much Alex has
grown as a character throughout the show’s run. Alex wanted to buy Meredith’s
old house from her, but before they finalized the sale he wanted her to fix a
few minor problems with the house, most of which had to do with markings on the
ceilings, walls and other parts of the house. In the end, Alex told Meredith
the reason why it was so important to him to stay at Seattle Grace hospital and
buy Meredith’s house was because Arizona had told him that he was a nobody and
had nothing to show for his life. Meredith also explained that the reason why
she was refusing to fix the things that Alex wanted her to fix was because they
reminded her of her childhood and various memories from when they were in
medical school together. Throughout the episode, Alex had also been saying that
he didn’t want to have any roommates and that he wanted to live on his own, but
at the end of the episode he agreed to let Cristina live there with him in
exchange for paying rent and buying the toilet paper. I can understand Alex
wanting her to pay rent, but what I don’t understand is why he also wanted her
to be the one who buys the toilet paper. That just seemed so weird and random
to me.
Jackson
basically had two storylines in this episode, which I both loved. Jackson’s
main storyline involved him continuing his sexual fling with April. Although,
Jackson got upset with April after she repeatedly compared them having sex with
each other to horrible things such as car accidents and eating dessert only to
regret it later. April continued to ride the Jesus train in this episode when
she was talking about how she thought that constantly sleeping with Jackson was
bad. I still think the whole thing about April being religious and talking
about Jesus when she’s talking about sex is extremely bizarre and random. When
they first established that April was a virgin, she first said that she was
simply waiting for the right guy, and then after she slept with Jackson for the
first time last season the writers suddenly started acting like the reason why
April hadn’t slept with anyone yet because of her religious beliefs despite the
fact that she hadn’t mentioned anything about being religious prior to sleeping
with Jackson.
I don’t know if
the writers decided that making April’s reasons for not having had sex before
due to her religious beliefs would be more interesting then having it simply be
about waiting for the right guy, but I always thought that extremely sudden
change in April’s character was very sloppy on the writers’ part. In the end,
Jackson told April that it upsets him when she compares them having sex to bad
things because it was more than just sex to him and that he has feelings for
her and she apologized for hurting his feelings. I’ve always loved Jackson and
April’s relationship, so I hope that now that Jackson has told April that he
has feelings for her she’ll stop saying that them having sex is a bad thing,
because that has really been annoying the hell out of me.
Jackson’s other
storyline where he kept getting emails from Richard and his mother by mistake
when they were supposed to be between Richard and his mother was also very
entertaining. I liked it because I found it rather funny, but at the same time
that storyline was definitely filler and could have easily been cut out of the
episode so it hopefully wouldn’t have been so crowded with numerous storylines.
Jo Wilson (One
of the new interns) was featured quite a bit in this episode as she was
treating a man who worked at the mall pretending to be Santa and he was
constantly vomiting on her throughout the episode. I really like the character
Jo, and I think that Camilla Luddington plays the role very well. Given the
fact that she was featured so heavily in this episode, it makes me wonder if
they are planning to make Camilla Luddington a series regular at some point.
Since I like both Camilla Luddington as an actress and Jo as a character, I
definitely wouldn’t mind if she was made a series regular at some point.
Although, I have to say that Jo’s storyline was one of the storylines that I
feel could have easily been left out so the episode wouldn’t have had so many
storylines going on in the episode since Camilla Luddington isn’t a series
regular at this point.
The thing that
surprised me the most about this episode was how much I liked Cristina in this
episode. I’ve never really been a fan of the character Cristina Yang before,
because I’ve always felt that she was too emotionally cold and unsympathetic to
others for my taste. However, I thought that her interactions with the interns
that she was supervising now that she’s back Seattle Grace hospital were pretty
amusing in this episode, especially the way she nicknamed her interns after
Snow White’s seven dwarfs. I’m also anxious to see how Alex and Cristina being
roommates plays out, because I’ve always loved watching the two of them
interact with each other.
All in all, I
really did love this episode for the most part. All of the storylines were all
very interesting, but like I said the only problem that I have with this
episode is that I feel like quite a few of the storylines were simply filler
and that the episode could have easily done without them. Hopefully, the
writers won’t continue to have a lot of episodes that have as many storylines
in them as this episode did. While I still managed to love this episode despite
the significant amount of filler that it had, I might not be able to let it
slide in the future if the writers continue to have a lot of episodes with this
many storylines in them.
That being said,
I give this episode a rating of an A-.
