Scandal: Paul Adelstein Cast in a Recurring Guest-Star Role in Season 3-TVLine

According to TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, Paul Adelstein has been been cast in a recurring guest-star for Scandal's upcoming third season. Details regarding Adelstein's role are currently being kept top secret, but he will first appear on the show in late October. Here's an except from the article:

Regardless, hopefully Adelstein’s character — who will first surface in late October — fares better than that of real-life wife Liza Weil, who played White House intern Amanda Tanner during Season 1.

Scandal marks Adelstein’s first TV role since Private Practice wrapped its run in January. (Mother’s Day, a pilot in which he played husband to Debra Messing, did not make CBS’ 2013-14 schedule.) The actor’s previous TV credits also include Prison Break (Kellerman!) and Rob Thomas’ Cupid.

Scandal opens Season 3 on Thursday, Oct. 3.

My thoughts: Despite the fact that nothing has been revealed about Paul Adelstein's role yet, I'm beyond excited about this news. I loved him on Private Practice, so I'm very confident that he'll do a great job on Scandal. Honestly, I had completely forgotten that Paul Adelstein is married to Liza Weil until I read the original article. I loved her on Gilmore Girls, and she was great on Scandal too, but I digress. That being said, since Shonda Rhimes clearly has a habit of using the same actors on several of her shows, I would love it if Chris Lowell, KaDee Strickland, Taye Diggs, Benjamin Bratt, or Caterina Scorsone appeared on Scandal at some point in the future. I loved them all on Private Practice, and I think it would be great to see them on Scandal, or any TV show for that matter. One thing is for sure though, Shonda Rhimes pretty much always does a great job of casting good actors to appear on her TV shows.

Private Practice | Previously on TVLine, KaDee Strickland used words such as “phenomenal” to describe the script for the Cooper-centric Episode 8. Now here she is (sorta) telling you what that hour is about. “It’s ‘Cooper All The Time’!” she laughs. “Everything you have fallen in love with about Cooper over the last six years, there’s a full hour of it. It’s ‘Cooper’s Greatest Hits,’ that’s what it is.” Which, given the news about the series’ end date, sets up a nice send-off for the character (as well as the others who each get a POV-centric episode before the Episode 13 finale). “After six years of doing these two [characters], it’s so great when you get in there and still enjoy working together,” Strickland says of scene partner Paul Adelstein. “I mean, we’ve been seeing each other at work on a daily basis for six years, and it’s wonderful how that can imbue the work. We had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun making that episode.”

"The thing I'm really pleased about this year is that they really are involving each character with their own storyline and they're doing it to the bone. So the first 13 episodes of what we have in this order are going to blow your mind."

Private Practice: Scoop on a possible storyline for Charlotte from TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich

Private Practice | If you’re among the many PPP fans who emailed me to ask if the whole Mason sitch might give Charlotte the itch to carry her own child, know that KaDee Strickland is one of you. “I pray that [series creator] Shonda [Rhimes] let’s Charlotte want her own child, because I think that would be so much fun,” the sunny Southerner told me. “But only Shonda can accept that invitation from the audience.” One story beat that titillates Strickland most? “Can you imagine Charlotte pregnant?” she asks. “Let’s just talk about that for a minute!”

Private Practice: Preview--Season 5 Episode 18 KaDee Strickland-TVLine

Here's an article by TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, which gives a preview of tonight's episode, episode 5x18 "It Was Inevitable" with some scoop on the episode directly from KaDee Strickland. In the article, Strickland also talks about the season 5 finale as well as Private Practice's odds of getting renewed for a sixth season. Here's an excerpt from the article where Strickland talks about the season finale and the show's odds for getting renewed:



“It’s so funny to me, because we don’t ask that question about David Kelley, or J.J. Abrams, or other great show runners that have multiple things going on. So I don’t think we should ask that of Shonda,” opines the actress. “I’m not one to sit around and look for the ‘worst case scenario.’ We should sort of anticipate good news.”

If only, Strickland says, because Private Practice has quite a finale scheduled for May 15. “Because of the way the show ends this season, it feels to me that a renewal would best serve us,” she teases with a slightly wicked laugh. “It’s a helluva ending.”

I ran by Strickland a flurry of finale rumors I’ve been hearing, including that one character will be shot, while another lands in jail. “Some of that is rumor, honey, unless they’ve made some big script changes that I don’t know about!” she responded. “Shonda likes to reinvent her scripts often, and I think some of that stuff is based on ‘maybe’ ideas, but not all of them have come to fruition. And some of them have.”

In addition to what the finale has in store for Charlotte and Cooper (more on that in a moment,) Strickland is pulling for Season 6 in part “to see what Shonda does with Addison, because, boy, does she leave things in an interesting place for that character. It’s fascinating, I can tell you that.”
Rewinding a bit, tonight’s spring premiere finds Charlotte and Cooper doing their best to brace an in-denial Mason for his mother’s actual death, following Erica’s weeks of declining health. “One of the most interesting parts of this storyline for me, personally, is thinking about the way we all process death – and how do you do that when you’re a little boy?” says Strickland. “How do you do it when your mom has already lived through a miraculous surgery? How do you engage that child with reality?”

To that end, Charlotte will spend time with ailing Erica while Cooper tends to the son he never knew he had but now has embraced. “How we deal with both of those worlds and help each of them accept certain realities… is kind of a sticky situation,” Strickland reveals. “But it feels to me very real, like something that people watching the show will understand. That’s gut-wrenching for me as the actor to perform, knowing that so many people have been through a similar situation.”

Inevitably, Charlotte and Cooper will be left to parent Mason, and that turn of events – certainly something no one saw coming heading into this season, let alone a year ago – is another reason why Strickland is rooting for renewal.

But when the time comes – and it will – is Charlotte truly ready to assume a full-time parental role in the lad’s life? When I ran that question by KaDee Strickland, she paused for a moment to think, then offered, “I, Kadee, do believe she is. [And as an actress] I love it and I want more of it.” Especially seeing how far the once-prickly doc has come since Seasons 1 and 2. “It’s so surprising to see [Charlotte] really just open up to this,” Strickland marveled. “Who would have thought this would have been where she would go? And I think it’s great.”

Private Practice | When I chatted up KaDee Strickland, she was in the midst of shooting an episode that was being directed by no less than her scene partner, Paul Adelstein. And what sort of fare did he have to work with this second time around? “They gave him one helluva episode,” Strickland avowed. “It is probably one of the most emotional episodes we’ve had all season” – which is saying something, given all the recent drama surrounding Erica and also Sam’s sister. In fact, at the table read for Adelstein’s episode, “We had to pass around a box of tissues, and I’m not making that up,” Strickland stressed. “When you don’t see the script in advance, it can really kick you in the pants.” (Reminder: Amy Brenneman will be live-tweeting the East Coast broadcast of tonight’s episode via @TheAmyBrenneman.)

Next Thursday, the Erica storyline will take Langer, Strickland and Adelstein to Grey’s Anatomy‘s Seattle Grace, as part of a two-hour crossover event. The change of venue “was very helpful, because if Charlotte has ever felt out of place in a hospital, it was there,” her portrayer notes. “It was also fun to just surrender; she would never be this emotional if she had her own staff around.”

As directed by Allison Liddi-Brown, who helmed the rougher patches of Charlotte’s rape story, “It’s quite an episode,” Strickland promises. “You get to the raw point, which is that someone you love may not survive this. What do you do? And what does that look like?”


The article ends with Strickland speculating on what a "What if?" episode would be like for Private Practice if they did an episode similar to Grey's Anatomy's "What if?" episode.
