Ausiello: From the sounds of it, FX’s espionage thriller isn’t letting the Emmy winner go without a fight. “We love Margo,” says exec producer Joel Fields, before adding (with tongue planted firmly in cheek), “Look, we’re The Americans. We’re spies. And I would never threaten anybody else in the business or at another network, but we love Margo. And Claudia is part of The Americans. So [CBS] can TRY to come after her and put her in another pilot. But they should be aware of the KGB. The KGB is a very powerful organization with a long reach.” Hope that answered your question, Julie!

New Girl: Give Jake Johnson an Emmy! Stat! (My thoughts on episode 2x20 “Chicago”)

I know that I’ve been very vocal about the fact that I think that season two of New Girl is better than the first season was and that I believe that the show has really been soaring higher than ever before creatively ever since Jess and Nick kissed in the episode “Cooler”, but I have to say that I have very mixed feelings about this episode. Don’t get me wrong though, I really liked it. Personally, I think that this episode had the potential to be a really great episode, but it sadly failed to live up to its full potential in my humble opinion.

As I was watching this episode for the first time, I couldn’t help but think that this episode would have been much better if it had been a one-hour episode opposed to being a typical thirty minutes long episode, which really ends up only being about twenty-two minutes long once you cut out the commercials. This whole episode felt very rushed to me. In the opening scene, Jess, Schmidt and Winston are playing around with some balloons that Jess had bought from a guy in a van and they were inhaling helium from the balloons, which made their voices sound high pitched. While that was all happening, Nick came into the apartment in an especially cranky mood as he was talking to his mother on the phone. A couple minutes later Nick comes back into the room and informs them that his father had died of a heart attack, and at first they didn’t want to say anything since their voices all sounded funny from the helium. It was only after Nick asked them why they weren’t saying anything that they finally said something, hugging Nick and offering him emotional support with their voices still under the effect of helium from the balloons as the show went to the theme song sequence, which I thought was pretty funny.

When the show returned from the first commercial break, Jess, Nick, Winston and Schmidt had just arrived at Nick’s parents’ house in Chicago where he grew up. Although, Nick made a comment where he says that his family apparently lived in a van from fall of 1988 to the spring of 1989. Schmidt is upset because the airline apparently lost his bags, so the only clothes that he has with him are the clothes that he was wearing when they were on the plane. Winston tells Nick that he’s also very upset about Walt’s death, which I think is really nice since they made it pretty clear in the episode “A Father’s Love” that he viewed Walt as a father figure. Winston also mentions that Walt had apparently once told him that he loved him more than he loved Nick, which prompted Nick to mention that his father had told him that too at some point. Ouch! That must be pretty tough for Nick to deal with, but I digress. Winston and Schmidt also warned Jess not to laugh when his family talk about him being responsible since Nick’s family apparently doesn’t understand why they would think that was funny.

Here's an article by Entertainment Weekly's Lanford Beard, which gives some scoop on tonight's episode, episode 2x20 "Chicago", directly from Margo Martindale who will be guest-starring in the episode as Nick's mother. Here's an excerpt from the article:

As EW exclusively previewed last week, tonight’s episode sees New Girl gang schlep to Chi-town when Nick’s father’s Walt suddenly passes away. The funeral preparations show new facets of Nick’s personality, including responsibility we wouldn’t dare expect from the slouchy bartender. Martindale also recalls filming Walt’s eulogy in which Johnson conveys Nick’s rarely seen vulnerability. “He made me cry every single time,” she says.

There’s plenty of comedy to balance out the drama as the roommate’s pull together to fulfill Walt’s final wish: An Elvis-themed funeral. With such potential for adorkability, how could Jess (Zooey Deschanel) not end up in the King’s fabled jumpsuit to perform an only-on-New-Girl rendition of “In the Ghetto”? Martindale — a self-proclaimed “gigantic Elvis fan” — says she might opt for something along the lines of “‘Hawaiian Wedding Song” for her own memorial, but that didn’t stop her from showing off her dance moves when the scene called for it. And, in the spirit of New Girl‘s improv vibe, “I didn’t get any input [on my dancing],” she laughs. “I just jumped up and started being a fool!” She adds, “I did appreciate hamming it up…. I’ve been doing all this drama, so it’s fun to do comedy.”

Martindale does admit she was slightly awestruck when she stepped on New Girl‘s improv-heavy set. ”I don’t have any skills as a writer,” she claims. By the end of the day, she was slinging zings with the best of ‘em. “I don’t know what they kept,” Martindale laughs. “It was all so mean!”

Dance moves and deadly line reads weren’t Martindale’s only secret weapons. “Nobody could have known that I am an Elvis fanatic,” she says. “Everybody I know, back in the ’70s and ’80s, used to give me pictures of Elvis. Elvis has been in my life since the ’50s.” She continues, “In 1982 or ’83, I did a play in Louisville called Graceland, which was all about being the number one Elvis fanatic. I dressed like Elvis for that one.” Something she can now share with Deschanel.

With a gig where even a funeral can turn into a dance party, of course Martindale would like to return as Bonnie for season 3. And she has a few ideas how to make that happen — not to mention set up a for-the-ages pairing between herself and Dennis Farina, who plays Walt. “Maybe [Walt] didn’t really die,” she suggests. “He is a con man. I think that he could easily not be dead. Why would he have to be dead? He conned his own death.” Somebody get Julius Pepperwood on the case!

New Girl: Nick Kroll and Bill Burr to guest-star | Inside TV | EW.com

According to Entertainment Weekly's Dan Snierson, Nick Kroll, Bill Burr and Ellen Abertini Dow will be guest-starring in an upcoming episode of New Girl as three of Nick's relatives. They will be appearing in the same episode that Margo Martindale will be guest-starring in as Nick's mom, Bonnie. Here's an excerpt from the article:

EW has learned that comedian Nick Kroll (The League) will guest star as Nick’s dim-yet-passionate younger brother, an air conditioner repairman named Jamie. Meanwhile, fellow stand-up Bill Burr (Breaking Bad) will play Bobby, Nick’s loudmouthed cousin and a TSA agent at Boston’s Logan Airport who is always fighting with Jamie.

In the episode, which airs next month on Fox, Nick (Jake Johnson) and his roommates travel to Chicago, where he grew up, and his friends soon learn that Nick is somehow the most mature member of his family.

This isn’t our first time meeting another Miller: Dennis Farina recently played Nick’s dad.

UPDATE: Ellen Abertini Dow (The Wedding Singer) has been cast as Nick’s partially deaf aunt who is convinced that the other family members are plotting against her.

My thoughts: As I said in my post on Margo Martindale being cast as Nick's mother (New Girl: Margo Martindale to play Nick's mom ), I'm not exactly thrilled about her playing his mom. I'm definitely very excited to meet other members of Nick's family though, especially after reading this news. The descriptions of Nick's family members sound hilarious. In terms of this casting news, I'm only familiar with Nick Kroll and his work on The League. Nick is very funny on The League, so I'm sure he'll do a great job on New Girl. I can't wait to see this episode.

In the episode, which will air on Fox in March, the gang travels to Chicago, where Nick (Jake Johnson) was raised. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) & co. are surprised to discover that Nick is actually the most responsible and mature member of his family. His hard-nosed, emotional mother is skeptical of her son’s relationship with Jess, and, well, of Jess in general.

My thoughts: I definitely have very mixed feelings about this casting news. On the one hand, I'm really excited to see what Nick's mom and other members of his family are like. I'm especially excited about the writers introducing more members of Nick's family since the article says that Nick is actually the most responsible and mature member of his family. The writers have always made it very clear that Nick is very irresponsible and immature, so the idea of Nick being the most mature and responsible member of his family will no doubt lead to some great comedic material. Just saying that Nick is very responsible and mature compared to the rest of his family automatically makes me think that the rest of his family must be dysfunctional beyond words.

On the other, I didn't like Margo Martindale at all on Justified, and I wasn't crazy about her in the episode of Suits that she guest-starred in either. Maybe it was just the characters that she played on Justified and Suits, but she just doesn't come across as a very charismatic actress that I want to see on TV a lot. I'll try to keep an open mind about this casting news though. For now, the most exciting thing about this news for me is that the writers will be introducing other members of Nick's family.

Person of Interest: Casts Former Lost star Ken Leung in Season 2-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Ken Leung will be guest-starring in the season 2 premiere of Person of Interest. Also, Margo Martindale will be guest-starring in a season 2 episode as well. Here's an excerpt from the article:



This marks the third project Emerson and Leung have worked on together. In addition to Lost, they both co-starred in the original Saw film.

Leung will appear in P.O.I.‘s opener on Sept. 27, while Martindale will make her entrance in Episode 2. Details on the duo’s characters were not made available.

My thoughts: I personally loved Ken Leung on Lost, and I always enjoyed watching Michael Emerson and Ken Leung's scenes together, so I'm really excited to see Leung in the season 2 premiere of Person of Interest. However, when it comes to the news about Margo Martindale's guest appearance in the second episode of season 2, I couldn't be more upset about the fact that she's going to be on the show if I tried to be. I hated Margo Martindale on Justified, and I hated her in the episode of Suits that she guest-starred in several week's ago. I don't exactly what it is, but there's something about Margo Martindale that annoys the hell out of me whenever I see her on TV.

That being said, I think Person of Interest is a great show, and I'm so glad that it did well last season, and I hope that it continues to do well in its second. It definitely puts a very interesting twist on the crime solving TV show genre. Michael Emerson was initially what made me want to check Person of Interest out, because I loved him on Lost, but I actually ended up liking Jim Caviezel and his character, John Reese, the most.
