"Now he's in our custody and alone, so what does that mean for him? Season 2 is Ward continuing to discover what he wants."

Don't call him an agent anymore. Because there's a small time jump going into Season 2, he'll already be in the process of rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. as the new director — but that might not be so easy since the alien serum is affecting his brain. "As director, he'll be faced with some tough decisions, harder decisions than he had to make as an agent," executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen tells me. "We'll see the emotional consequences of that and we'll see the shifts in dynamics between the characters because of that." (Also: Did you see this?)

We can confirm that Agent Maria Hill will be back! "We have plans to bring her in and see her," Jed Whedon spilled to us, while Maurissa Tancharoen added, "We love Cobie, we love the character, she's so great." But the gushing didn't stop there as Jeffrey Bell chimed in, "She fits really nicely on the show and has good chemistry with Coulson and the others." Basically, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. EPs love her as much as we do.

As a matter of fact, just as the season finale faded to black on Tuesday night, we asked Clark Gregg about Coulson’s plum new job title. “It’s a very important gig,” he acknowledged. “I saw it [Monday] night for the first time myself, and I got choked up watching it. As someone who grew up reading the S.H.I.E.L.D. comics, I kind of couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It is a big deal” — especially given the second post-credits scene, which suggested that all is not right in Coulson’s mind. “I think it’s interesting that Director Fury gave Agent Coulson this job, given that he still has GH-325 pumping through him,” Gregg observed. “We don’t know 100 percent what he is, but we’ll see what happens. It’ll be an exciting Season 2.”

The good news: Producers are hoping to find a more permanent position for her next season. The bad:  Agent Hill's future on the show — including her return in the April 29 episode — will be highly contentious. For starters, she was last seen applying for a job at Stark Industries at the end of Winter Soldier. "It would appear that she's moving on. Coulson clearly has not," executive producer Jeph Loeb says. " And let's not forget that Hill hid the truth about T.A.H.I.T.I. "I don't know how much Coulson trusts her opinion on anything, frankly," executive producer Jeffrey Bell says.

Ausiello: As awesome as that would be, I can’t see it happening — at least not the series regular part. That said, a Maria Hill arc in Season 2 seems plausible — assuming there is a Season 2.

Though she wouldn't confirm or deny my theory that the Clairvoyant is someone we already know, executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen promises the reveal is coming very soon. How soon? Well, the April 1 episode — which features the returns of Agents Hand (Saffron Burrows), Garrett (Bill Paxton), Sitwell (Maximiliano Hernández) and Blake (Titus Welliver) — is shaping up to be pretty super. I hear one of the returning faces is harboring a big secret and another will wind up on the wrong end of a battle with Deathlok.

And perhaps because of that, “Things go crazy” in the season finale, EP Maurissa Tancharoen said, “and not all survive.”
