Book Review: Hard Rules (Book #1 in the Dirty Money series) by Lisa Renee Jones

Given the fact that the romance genre is one of my top favorite genres of books to read, and it’s my #1 favorite genre of books to review for my blog; I’m always looking for new authors who write books that are a part of the romance genre to check out. Hard Rules is the first book by Lisa Renee Jones that I’ve ever read, and I’m thrilled to say that I absolutely loved it. While the romance genre is one of my top favorite genres of books to read, I definitely can’t deny that the romance genre is a genre that tends to be full of clichés, and can oftentimes be rather lacking in originality. That being said, Hard Rules is in many ways unlike any romance novel that I’ve ever read.

The one thing that really sets Hard Rules apart from all of the other books in the romance genre that I’ve read over the years more than anything else is definitely the overall tone of Jones’ writing. The overall tone of Hard Rules is definitely darker than any book in the romance genre that I’ve ever read, and the tone of the book also has a certain level of mystery and intrigue to it that I’m not used to seeing when it comes to books within the romance genre. That definitely made reading Hard Rules a rather refreshing and enjoyable experience for me. While I’ve never watched Sons of Anarchy before, based on what I’ve heard about the show, I’m guessing that people are comparing Hard Rules to that show because of the somewhat dark and mysterious tone of Jones’ writing. Regardless of whether or not I’m right about why people have compared Hard Rules to Sons of Anarchy, reading this book definitely made me want to watch Sons of Anarchy. One thing that I think Jones handled very well throughout the entire book is the way that she maintained the darker, more mysterious tone of the book without ever letting it ruin the romance and steaminess between Shane Brandon and Emily Stevens.

The other thing that makes Hard Rules so unique compared to all of the other books in the romance genre that I’ve read over the years is the fact that the element of mystery and intrigue that’s present throughout the book pretty much revolved entirely around Emily. In the past, whenever I’ve read a book in the romance genre where one of the characters is portrayed as being at least somewhat of a mysterious person who has a secret, it has always been the guy who has filled that role. By having Emily be the one who’s filling that role in this book, I feel like Jones is offering people something new and fresh with Hard Rules.

Jones definitely excels at writing Emily in such a way that she’s a very likable character, despite the fact that she apparently has a dark secret that instead of finally revealing it to the reader at the end of the book; Jones reveals a whole new plot twist that further added to the mystery that surrounds Emily. While I spent pretty much the entire book feeling very anxious and excited to learn what exactly Emily’s secret and actual backstory is, I’m honestly not the least bit upset that Jones doesn’t reveal any of that information in this book. If anything, the way Jones ends the book got me even more excited to read the second book in the Dirty Money series, Damage Control, than I already was before I even finished reading this book.

Once Upon a Time: Season 7 scoop on the possibility of Lucy's name being a reference to a fairy tale character or a classic character from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

https://pmctvline2.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/once-upon-time-season-6-finale-lucy.jpg?w=621

Here's some scoop on Once Upon a Time from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: I loved the Once Upon a Time season finale. Could they be doing Narnia next season? If not, I’m surprised by the name Lucy. But I could totally be reading too much into it. —David
Ausiello: Looks like you answered your own question at the end there, David. Matt Mitovich asked the Once creators if there is anything to be gleaned from the naming of Henry’s daughter, and they came back with a decisive “no.”

Will & Grace: Scoop on the possibility of the series finale being retconned for the revival from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

http://cdn3.thr.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/scale_crop_768_433/2016/09/will_and_grace_-_presidential_-_screenshot_-_h_-_2016_0.jpg

Here's some scoop on the Will & Grace revival from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Long time fan, first time caller. Any news on how Will & Grace will retcon its finale? Or are they pulling a Roseanne and just ignoring it all? —Eliott
Ausiello: They’re (mostly) pulling a Roseanne. The finale posited that Will and Grace remained estranged well into their 50s. That will clearly be scrubbed from the history books. Completely eliminating Will and Grace’s now-teenage children (with Leo and Vince, respectively) from the revival equation will likely prove more of a challenge. But that’s what boarding school is for, right?

Bloodline: Scoop on the series finale from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/UlTKv30wDp0/maxresdefault.jpg

Here's some scoop on Bloodline from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: I’d love a Bloodline final-season scoop! —Jesse
Ausiello: The series finale “brings to a close the chapter of this story for the Rayburns,” teases exec producer Todd Kessler, who adds, “But it also leaves the audience with a question. And it’s a question that hopefully you will turn to the person you’re watching with and go, ‘What do you think happened?’ It’s meant to be satisfying and thought-provoking.” Having seen the finale, I can confirm that it succeeds on both fronts. I can also confirm that the Season 3 episode everyone will be talking about is not No. 10 (aka the finale). It’s No. 9 (the penultimate episode). I’m still processing everything that transpired in it. BTW, the final season drops this Friday on Netflix.

Scorpion: Scoop on the future of Happy and Toby's marriage in season 4 from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Scorpion from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Anything you can tease about Scorpion? —Stephanie
Ausiello: Now that Happy and Toby have tied the knot, executive producer Nick Santora is confident that another major development is in sight for the couple — like, say, a pint-sized addition to Team Scorpion. “Like all things, the answers can be found in elementary school: First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes something in a baby carriage,” Santora hints. Though he says he’s in no rush to bring a baby genius onto the show, Santora believes a pregnancy is “the natural progression” for Happy and her new husband. “One of my favorite speeches of the season was when Happy said she always wanted to wait outside the school for her kid,” he tells us. “She still wants that, and Toby wants that.”

Ausiello: Pretty sure Collins’ Cas is sticking around (in some form). Sheppard’s Crowley, however, is dunzo (for now, at least).

Supergirl: Scoop on Calista Flockhart's future on the show and more on season 3 from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Supergirl from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: The Legion ring was shown in the fortress in Kevin Smith’s Supergirl episode. When will see it used in action? —Jen
Ausiello: When we delivered your Q to Supergirl star Melissa Benoist, she answered, “The Legion Ring, I believe, is on its way — but I don’t know exactly when.”

Question: Is it safe to assume that Cat Grant is back full time for Season 3 of Supergirl? She looked pretty cozy in her old office. —Kellen
Ausiello: It is not safe to assume that. Despite the fact that Flockhart was listed among the series regulars in Supergirl‘s official Season 3 press release, I’m told she will not rejoin the full-time ranks. But if the scheduling can be worked out, you can count on her putting in a handful of guest appearances, as she did in Season 2. BONUS SCOOP: Casting for Season 3 villain Reign is underway and rumor has it the Big Bad will have a major presence in Season 3 (i.e. appearing in possibly a dozen episodes).

Younger: Liza and Kelsey related scoop on the season 4 premiere (Episode 4x01 "Post Truth") from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Younger from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Desperate Younger fan here! Anything you can tell me about Season 4? –Lucy
Ausiello: Actually, Lucy, we recently visited the Younger set, where star Sutton Foster revealed how things pick back up when the show returns on June 28: “Season 4 starts with [Liza and Kelsey] back on that couch, so I had to make sure that dress still fit. We start right back in that conversation between her and Kelsey, and Kelsey does not take it well, which I expected. But what did surprise me was how everything unfolds after that. I had no idea how her reaction would affect the show, how it would all play out.”

Lucifer: Scoop on the season 2 finale (Episode 2x18 "The Good, the Bad, and the Crispy") from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/97/Lucifer%2C_title.jpg

Here's some scoop on Lucifer from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: I’m obsessed with Lucifer! What can you tease about the finale next week? —Maria
Ausiello: As hinted previously, “The Good, the Bad and the Crispy” “is where everything comes to a head,” says co-showrunner Joe Henderson. “Lucifer finally answers the question of, ‘What do you do with a problem called Mom?’ and it’s the biggest episode we’ve ever done. It’s also our most special effects[-heavy] episode ever. We made a very big episode and somehow we were able to pull it off, so it’s explosive, but most importantly, and very important to me, it wraps up the Season 2 storyline and then ends on a cliffhanger that sets up what Season 3 is going to be.” And as that happens, “You’re going to have people throwing stuff at the TV when it ends,” Henderson warns. “But throw soft stuff, stuff that’ll bounce.”

Fear the Walking Dead: Scoop on season 3 from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Fear the Walking Dead from this week's (Posted on 5/24/17) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: Whatcha hearing about Fear the Walking Dead this season? — Brett
Ausiello: What, this wasn’t enough? OK, how’s this? In some ways, Season 3, which kicks off Sunday, June 4 (9/8c, AMC), marks a reset for the Walking Dead prequel. In the two-hour premiere alone, “there are some stories we are able to wrap up,” showrunner Dave Erickson says. Such as? “There’s a character we sort of put aside for a while last season who had a huge impact on Strand. She’s going to return, and Strand will have to come to terms with that.” Which may explain why the first Season 3 photo released of Colman Domingo showed his alter ego with blood on his hands and a shell-shocked expression on his face.

Question: I’m stressing out about The 100 finale tonight! Anything you can tell us? Especially about Bellamy and Clarke? Thank you! —Salimah
Ausiello: Ah, we have a “Bellarke” fan on our hands, eh? Well, you’ll be happy to know that the two characters share a very emotional conversation at the top of the episode — though you’re right to be worried by its foreboding undertones.

Book Review: Thrawn (Star Wars) by Timothy Zahn

Right off the bat, I have to say that Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn was definitely one of my most anticipated book releases of 2017, and I’m very happy to say that it ultimately exceeded my expectations for the most part. Not only is Thrawn definitely my favorite out of all the new cannon Star Wars books that I’ve read so far, I would also say that it ranks #2 in terms of how I would rank my favorite books out of all the books I’ve read so far in 2017. For the record, my #1 favorite book that I’ve read so far this year is definitely Jeff Zentner’s new book, Goodbye Days.

While I haven’t read Timothy Zahn’s original Thrawn trilogy, I felt like Zahn did a really fantastic job of presenting Thrawn as a very complex and nuanced character in this book. It was really fascinating to see how Thrawn managed to have such a successful career in the Imperial army, despite the fact that he’s a Chiss who’s living in a society that discriminates against alien races. That definitely added a very interesting element to the character Thrawn, and the book as a whole.

One thing that I really liked about this book is the fact that Zahn did a great job of writing Thrawn in such a way that while he is in many ways a genius, he still has flaws and weaknesses. I’m really glad that Zahn didn’t try to portray Thrawn as being invincible and superior to everybody else in this book, because I think it would have been incredibly frustrating if Zahn hadn’t given Thrawn some vulnerabilities and humanized him to a certain degree, especially since this book really gives people an in depth look into how Thrawn’s mind works. One of the best ways I thought that Zahn portrayed Thrawn as having some flaws and vulnerabilities was with the inclusion of the character Nightswan, who serves as a worthy adversary for Thrawn throughout the book. Thrawn may be a genius in a lot of ways, but he definitely has a bit of a blind spot when it comes to Nightswan, I felt like Zahn did a fantastic job of writing the adversarial dynamic of Thrawn and Nightswan’s relationship.

In terms of how Zahn gives the reader a lot of insight into the way Thrawn thinks throughout the book, the openings of each chapter of the book really give the reader some great insight into how Thrawn’s mind works. Admittedly, I was definitely very confused for a large portion of the book about what exactly the openings of each chapter were supposed to be, because I didn’t know where, when and to whom Thrawn was saying those things to. Eventually, it was revealed that the openings of each chapter were actually excerpts from a journal that Thrawn had written in at some point, and then later gave to Eli. Not only do I think that the excerpts from Thrawn’s journal were ultimately a really great and effective way to give the reader a lot of insight into the character; I also feel like Thrawn giving Eli his journal was a great way to show that Thrawn had really come to view Eli as his protégé.

OwlCrate Unboxing: May 2017 (Comic Explosion)

Here's what I got in my May 2017 OwlCrate box, which came in the mail today. The theme for May's box is "Comic Explosion".

My May @owlcrate box came in the mail today, and I absolutely love it! ☺️ I first subscribed to OwlCrate back in November of 2015, with the December 2015 box being the very first OwlCrate box that I ever received, and this month's box is seriously one of my top favorite OwlCrate boxes that I've ever received. 😀 I love Batman, so I'm thrilled that I got a Batman Funko POP! in my box. 😀 I love the pen, which has six different colors of in. I'm really excited to try the coffee candy, and I'm looking forward to reading the sampler of Afar. Most importantly, I'm beyond excited about this month's book, Eliza and Her Monsters, because it's exactly the kind of book that I've always hoped to review, and talk about on my blog. ☺ The OwlCrate exclusive cover for the book is awesome! 😀 This truly is a fantastic OwlCrate box. 😀 #owlcrate #comicexplosion #bookstagram #bookblog #bookhaul #bookaholic #bookaddict #bookworm #elizaandhermonsters #francesazappia #batman @francesa_zappia

Plans start at $29.99, plus shipping. The people who run OwlCrate are all very nice, and they’re really great at answering any questions that people may have about OwlCrate on Twitter, or via email. I highly recommend subscribing to OwlCrate, especially if you’re a fan of YA books. If you’re interested in learning more about OwlCrate, or subscribing to it, you can check out their website here. For the record, I wasn’t asked by the people who run OwlCrate to promote their business on my blog; I’m only mentioning OwlCrate here because I really love OwlCrate a lot, especially now that I’m reviewing books for my blog instead of TV shows.

Finally, in case you’re unaware, I've reviewed Jeff Zentner’s debut novel, The Serpent King, which was OwlCrate’s book of the month for March of last year when the theme was "Writer’s Block". I've also reviewed P.S. I Like You by Kasie Westwhich was the book of the month for August of last year when the theme was "Fast Times at Y.A. High"; as well Audrey Coulthurst's book, Of Fire and Stars, which was the December 2016 book of the month when the theme was "Epic".

As soon as I saw the Polynesian mask on the portal door in the hat during the Once Upon a Time finale, I knew right away that Lucy’s mother will most likely be Moana. — Roger
Not so fast. “To examine those doors as clues to what season 7 would be is not necessarily what they were there for,” EP Adam Horowitz says. “It’s more of a symbolic thing that’s telling us how big our universe is and that there are many places left to be explored.” So, it’s probably unlikely, but never lose hope!
