ABC Renews Shows for the 2013-2014 TV Season: Scandal, Grey’s, Nashville and More!-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, ABC has renewed Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, Revenge, Castle, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, Modern Family, The Middle, Suburgatory and Last Man Standing for the 2013-2014 TV season. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some information on which shows ABC has canceled:

On the cancellation front, Malibu Country, Body of Proof, How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life), Red Widow and Happy Endings have been axed (full story on H.E.‘s demise here).

The fate of freshman sitcoms The Neighbors and Family Tools is TBD.

My thoughts: In terms of all the shows that ABC has renewed for the 2013-2014 TV season, most of these renewals don't come as a surprise to me. Although, I am kind of surprised that Nashville has been renewed despite what a lot of entertainment news reporters had been saying about the show's renewal chances. From where I'm standing, Nashville's ratings haven't been very good for most of the season, so I wasn't expecting it to be renewed. I've never watched Nashville before, but I'm definitely happy for the show's fans that it has been renewed.

Suburgatory's ratings weren't the greatest this year, so I was definitely kind of worried that the show might be canceled. I'll admit that it took a while for Suburgatory to grow on me, but I've really come to love the show, so I'm thrilled that it has been renewed as well. Suburgatory is an incredibly underrated show, if you ask me. Last Man Standing's renewal is a little bit surprising to me, but I do kind of like the show, so I'm glad that it has been renewed. I guess the ABC network executives were happy with Last Man Standing's ratings on Friday nights this past season. In terms of all the other shows that have been renewed, none of these renewals come as a surprise to me. With the exception of Castle, which I only watch occasionally, I watch all of these shows every week and consider them to be some of my favorite TV shows, so I'm really happy that they've all been renewed.

When it comes to the shows that ABC has canceled, the only cancellation that I'm truly upset about is Happy Endings, but I can't say that I didn't see the show's cancellation coming given how bad its ratings were this past season. In case I haven't already made it perfectly clear to anybody who reads my blog on a regular basis, Happy Endings is one of my top favorite comedies, so I really hope that the USA network does end up picking up the show for a fourth season like they've apparently expressed interest in doing. Happy Endings is a truly hilarious and underrated show, so I would hate to see it end now.

And at the risking of getting ahead of ourselves, the finale will resolve a long-standing mystery and feature a shocking cameo by this studly hunkamuffin.

Person of Interest: This show is my new addiction

I'm currently in the process of watching season one of Person of Interest on DVD, and I have to say that I really wish that I had started watching the show on a regular basis a lot sooner than I did. It's an awesome show, and I’m completely addicted to watching it now. In the past I didn't watch a lot of crime solving TV shows, but it seems like more and more writers in Hollywood are coming up with ideas that offer a different and interesting twist in the genre, so I've found myself watching more and more crime solving shows in the last few years. My personal favorites are Lie to Me (May that show rest in peace), White Collar, Body of Proof, Grimm, Criminal Minds, and of course, Person of Interest.

Person of Interest is a show with a very interesting premise of using a machine to try and prevent and solve crimes. It has great writing with great characters and a great cast. As far as the cast is concerned, I originally wanted to watch the show primarily because Michael Emerson is one of the stars of the show, and I absolutely loved him on Lost. When it comes to Person of Interest, I love Michael Emerson and his character, Harold Finch, but I was very surprised when I found myself loving Jim Caviezel and his character John Reese even more. Jim brings a perfect combination of mystery, stoicism, and wit to the role. I also love how he can be a major bad ass at times, and I'm very intrigued by Reese relationship with his deceased lover, Jessica, which has been shown through flashbacks. I've only watched the first fifteen episodes of the first season, so it will be interesting to see if they have more flashbacks of Reese's relationship with Jessica in the remaining season one episodes that I haven’t watched yet.

When I first started watching Person of Interest, I looked up what else Jim Caviezel had been in, and I was shocked to discover that Jim was the actor who played Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. I've only seen that movie once, which was back in 2004 when it was playing in movie theaters and my parents took me with them to see it. Since that movie wasn't in English, I was under the impression that none of the actors who were in the movie were from the United State or spoke English. I honestly thought that I'd never see any of the actors who were in that movie in anything else after that, but clearly I was wrong. Jim Caviezel starring in Person of Interest as John Reese is definitely a major departure from him playing Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. That’s for sure; I for one thought that he did a great job in that movie though.

I'd be lying if I didn't say that a part of why I've come to like Person of Interest so much is because I've developed a major crush on Jim Caviezel. I know that's a really shallow and silly reason to like a TV show, but it's true. I think Jim is a very attractive man, but I digress.

Michael Emerson does a great job of playing Finch's reclusive nature and tendency to rebuff Reese's attempts to get to know him better, which adds a lot of intrigue and mystery to the character. Finch’s mysterious nature is definitely one of the best things about the character, if you ask me. Plus, Michael does a great job handling all of Finch's mannerisms and body movements that have largely been caused by mysterious injuries that Finch has suffered from for some unknown reasons in the past. One thing that I would love to see is for the writers explore in future episodes is the backstory behind what caused Finch’s injuries.

Finch and Reese's personalities compliment each other perfectly. Like I just mentioned, Finch is very mysterious and withholding, and he often rebuffs Reese's very simple attempts to get to know him better. In one episode, Finch was confused as to how Reese had figured out that he liked to drink tea, to which Reese responded by telling Finch to relax because it wasn’t like he had asked him what his favorite color was. That’s definitely one of my favorite Reese moments right now.

In another episode, Finch initially refused to tell Reese whether or not he frequently went to a particular diner that the two of them met at to discuss business, but at the end of the episode Finch recommended to Reese that he try something on the menu that he himself had ordered many times, indicating that he does go to that diner on a frequent basis. Plus, when the series started Finch had a "Don't call me, I'll contact you when I need your help.” attitude towards Reese, but Finch seems to have softened a little bit towards him since then when it comes to his withholding nature. Due to their complicated past, Finch and Reese are both rather serious men, but Reese does have a bit of witty side, and some people might even say that he has a playful side at times. This is especially the case when he's interacting with Detective Joss Carter, and it’s also a big part of why Reese is my favorite character on the show.

Detective Carter is also an interesting character, and the fact that she isn't aware of the existence of the machine adds an interesting element to the show. I have to say that I enjoy watching Detective Carter the most when she's interacting with Reese. The only thing that hasn't really done anything to contribute to my enjoyment of the show at this point in time is the character Detective Lionel Fusco. Sure, he's a corrupt cop who Reese has blackmailed into helping him, but the whole corrupt cop angle seems rather cliché to me for a TV show that’s otherwise very unique and original. For the most part, I feel like he's just "there". Perhaps my opinion of the character Detective Fusco would change if the writers did a little more with the character. For the time being I don’t hate Fusco, but I don’t love the character either.

The bottom line is that Person of Interest really is an extremely addictive TV show to watch that offers a rather fresh take on the crime solving TV genre. If you're not already watching it, then I strongly recommend that you check it out when season two starts this Thursday (9/27/12). Person of Interest is definitely a must watch TV show.

Body of Proof Scoop: Michael Nouri, Ray Wise and Derek Webster Form Mob of Guest Stars-TVLine

According to TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich, Michael Nouri, Ray Wise and Derek Webster will be guest-starring in season 3 of Body of Proof. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Nouri's, Wise's and Webster's roles:

In the fourth installment of the coming run (premiering at midseason), Nouri will play Daniel Russo, a crime boss whose son is killed under suspicious circumstances. Webster has been cast as a boxing coach who is questioned in the murder, while Wise will play Russo’s attorney.

My thoughts: Out of these three actors I'm familiar with Michael Nouri and Ray Wise, but I don't think that I've heard of Derek Webster before. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Michael Nouri and Ray Wise on Body of Proof, because they are both great actors. If you ask me, Body of Proof is a very underrated show and I really wish that more people were watching it. That being said, I'm still not sure what I think about all the changes that they've made to the cast for season 3 and the changes they've made to the show in general.

I always loved the show just the way it was in seasons 1 and 2. I especially loved the dynamic between Megan and Peter, and I always thought that Dana Delany and Nicholas Bishop had great onscreen chemistry with each other. I'm just having trouble understanding why the producers felt the need to make so many changes to the show. Despite the fact that I'm not crazy about the changes they're making to Body of Proof, I'm really going to try to reserve judgment until season 3 starts and I actually get to see what the show is going to be like with all of the changes they've made to the show.

Perception: Renewed By TNT For a Second Season-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, TNT has renewed Perception for a 13-episode second season. Here's an excerpt from the article:


“Perception has captured the imagination of TNT’s audience of armchair detectives with wonderfully intricate cases, emotionally charged situations and, of course, a terrific cast led by Eric McCormack,” said TNT prez Michael Wright. “Daniel Pierce is a truly unique and fascinating addition to television’s pantheon of crime solvers. We look forward to seeing where Perception takes us next.”

Perception wraps Season 1 in mid-September. Its 13-epiosde second season is slated to air next year.

My thoughts: I'm beyond thrilled that Perception has been renewed for a second season for several reasons. First off, I've been a huge fan of Eric McCormack's ever since he was on Will & Grace. Plus, I just think it's a great show and it offers a creative take on the crime solving TV genre. I love how Perception really keeps you guessing about what's real and what's simply a hallucination that Daniel Pierce is having.

It wasn't until more recent years that I started watching a lot of crime solving TV shows when more and more shows were being created that put a unique take on the genre and aren't extremely formulaic like the CSI franchise, which I've never been able to get into. Aside from Perception, the other crime shows that I really love are Grimm, Person of Interest, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, Body of Proof and Lie To Me before it got cancelled.

Body of Proof: Scoop on the changes to the show for season 3 from TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich

Here's some scoop on Body of Proof from TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich's weekly column Matt's Inside Line for the week of 8/9/12.

Body of Proof | Part and parcel with the many casting changes on tap for Season 3 of this medical drama/procedural, fans should expect a shift in intensity, as well. “ABC really liked our last couple episodes, because they had really high stakes,” Dana Delany says of the outbreak arc featuring guest star Luke Perry as a CDC bigwig, “so right off the bat we’re back to that.” The series lead goes on to note that while Megan & Co. are not dealing with the same threat, the drama is “just as crazy and just as dangerous. It’s going to be a little bit insane for a while!”

Body of Proof: Elyes Gabel Joins the Cast as a Series Regular for Season 3-TVLine

According to TVLine's Kimberly Roots, Elyes Gabel is joining the cast of Body of Proof as a series regular for season 3. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Gabel's role:



Game of Thrones alum Elyes Gabel has been cast as smart, cocky Det. Adam Schaeffer on the ABC drama, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Proof showrunners Matthew Gross and Christopher Murphey first alerted TVLine to the new roles just after series regulars Nicholas Bishop, John Carroll Lynch and Sonja Sohn were let go earlier this summer. Fringe’s Mark Valley filled the first spot: Det. Tommy Sullivan, a onetime love interest of Megan’s who transfers to Philadelphia to win her back.

The second addition, Gabel’s Adam, “is a guy who thinks that he knows it all,” Gross said at the time. “He’s wise beyond his years, but doesn’t have the experience to back it up. And he might get himself in some trouble along the way for running his mouth off.”

My thoughts: Honestly, I'm not too crazy about all of the changes that producers are making to the cast of Body of Proof as a part of this "revamp" for season 3. I liked the show just the way it was for the first two seasons of the show, and I think this show is a very clever take on the crime solving TV drama genre. I loved the dynamic between Megan and Peter, and it was one of my favorite things about the show. I'm definitely going to miss not having Nicholas Bishop on the show.

I know that all of the these changes to the show are apparently the producers' decision and not the network's, but a part of me can't stop wondering what the point was of ABC renewing the show for a third season if they are basically going to turn Body of Proof into a completely different show. Even though I'm not very happy with all of the changes that they are making to the show at the moment, I'm going to try and keep an open mind and wait until season 3 starts before I make any definitive opinion regarding the "revamped" Body of Proof. I just hope all of these changes don't complete blow up in the faces of all the producers of Body of Proof.

Exclusive: Body Of Proof Boss Explains Cast Shake-Up, Reveals New Players to Be Added-TVLine

Here's an interview that the creator and showrunner Matt Gross along with executive producers Christopher Murphey and Evan Katz did with TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich about the recent cast shake-up and how the show will change in season 3, particularly by adding several new characters to the cast, which they give some scoop on. Here's an excerpt from the interview where they explain why they fired Nicholas Bishop (Peter), John Carrol Lynch (Bud) and Sonja Sohn (Sam):



TVLINE | For starters, I understand that what’s going on here is not about shaving dollars.
MATTHEW GROSS | No, not at all. We were fortunate enough to get a Season 3 of our show, and in trying to bring more eyeballs to our show, we wanted to change some of the dynamic and create new characters. And that’s the purpose for all of this. Also, we just brought on Evan Katz as one of the heads of the “three-headed hydra” — that’s what we refer to ourselves as.
EVAN KATZ | A very nice hydra by the way. It’s sort of a creative reboot of the show with the goal of being more dynamic, higher stakes, everything that we can do to amp up the stakes of each episode –

My thoughts: The only firing that I'm truly upset about is the fact that they fired Nicholas Bishop, because I always loved the dynamic between Megan and Peter. A big part of me was definitely hoping that they would become romantically involved at some point. As for John Carrol Lynch and Sonja Sohn being fired from the show, I liked their characters, but not to the point where Lynch and Sohn being fired would upset me. I can definitely live without them being on the show. I'm really glad that they didn't fire Jeri Ryan, because I've been a huge fan of hers' ever since she was on Star Trek: Voyager, and she's another one of my favorite things about Body of Proof.

Body of Proof: John Carroll Lynch Leaving the Show-TVLine

According to TVLine's Kimberly Root's, John Carroll Lynch (Det. Bud Morris) won't be returning for season 3 of Body of Proof, and he'll be joining NBC's new show Do No Harm as a series regular. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some details on Lynch's departure from Body of Proof and his role on Do No Harm:



Sources tell TVLine exclusively that the Dana Delany-led ABC crime drama, which Lynch has been with since the pilot, didn’t pick up his option for Season 3.

But when a medical examiner-drama door closes, a medical drama window opens. We hear that Lynch is joining NBC’s new procedural Do No Harm as a series regular. The actor had appeared in the pilot as a guest star.

Harm, which stars Rescue Me’s Steven Pasquale, Alana de la Garza (Law & Order), Phylicia Rashad and Mousa Kraish, centers on a neurosurgeon (Pasquale) whose dangerous alter-ego is poised to seriously mess with his life. Lynch plays the NA sponsor to Pasquale’s character.

It just so happens that we caught up with the show's two lovely leading ladies to chat about season three. "I understand there's going to be a little more action, a little more excitement," Jeri Ryan shared, while Dana Delany said, "We ended with a cliffhanger, so we don't know what's going to happen with my assistant Peter. That was very action-packed and I think people liked that. ABC liked that, so there's going to be a little more heightened stakes next season."
