New Girl: Damon Wayans Jr. Extends Season 3 Deal-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Damon Wayans Jr. has finalized a new deal with New Girl to continue appearing on the show for the remainder of season 3. Wayans initially signed a four-episode deal with the show. Here's an excerpt from the article:

Technically speaking, Wayans will continue to receive the Heather Locklear treatment and be billed as a “special guest star.”

As previously reported, the Happy Endings alum is currently developing a new comedy project with Fox to be directed by Modern Family co-executive producer Jason Winer and written by Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne, the showrunners from FX’s canine comedy Wilfred. Titled Man/Child, the potential series is about a pair of single dads who become roommates and struggle to find the balance between being responsible parents and debaucherous bachelors.

My thoughts: I'm definitely very excited about the fact that Damon Wayans Jr. will be sticking with New Girl for the rest of season 3, because I loved him on Happy Endings. It's really nice to see that Wayans and the rest of the cast of Happy Endings are finding decent acting jobs since the show's cancellation. I'll admit that Coach was probably my least favorite character in the pilot, mainly because I thought that the character was too whacky and over-the-top compared to the rest of the characters on the show. However, I personally am glad that the writers mellowed Coach out a little bit in terms of how they wrote the character in the episode "Coach". It definitely made Coach a lot more likable in my opinion. That being said, it's definitely great to have Damon Wayans Jr. on the show again, and I can't wait to see what kind of storylines that the writers are planning for Coach now that he'll be sticking around for the rest of the season.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 9 episode to mock Emmy snubs

According to Entertainment Weekly's James Hibberd, the writers of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be doing an episode in the show's upcoming ninth season where the show will mock the fact that the Emmy voters have constantly snubbed the show for Emmy awards throughout its run. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some scoop on the episode as well as several season 9 episodes:

But the cast is going to tackle the issue in an episode this fall titled “The Gang Desperately Tries to Win an Award.” The setup: They realize all the other local bars win awards and so they visit the competition to see what they’re doing “right.” Then they change Paddy’s Pub to try and fit the formula. Naturally, the makeover doesn’t go very well.

When the subject was brought up while the gang was on a press tour panel in Beverly Hills on Friday, there was naturally some riffing about this:


“I didn’t even realize the nominations came out until a couple days later,” said co-star Kaitlin Olson. “I was like, ‘oh, it’s a shame again this year.’”

“Gary Oldman hasn’t won an Academy Award,” said co-star Glenn Howerton. “We’re the Gary Oldman of shows.”

“There’s traffic and then you have to put the suit on…” co-star Danny DeVito said.

“You have to do makeup and stuff…” Olson added.

More seriously, creator Rob McElhenney thought that the show’s trajectory may be a reason for being overlooked, too. “We were off the radar for so long, by the time we’re [more visible] in the fifth season, the Emmy voter is thinking, ‘That’s not the new show, it’s the old show,’” he said. “Honestly, we haven’t made a concerted effort to [try to win].”

Other episodes next season include an Flowers for Algernon-inspired episode penned by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss where Charlie takes a drug that makes him smarter, a Thanksgiving-themed episode where the gang invites all their enemies to dinner, they’re also doing another Lethal Weapon parody, plus Gale the Snail (Mary Lynn Rajskub) and Bill Ponderosa (Lance Barber) are coming back.

My thoughts: Personally, I think this sounds like a great idea for an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. As much as I love Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory, which are two shows that are constantly being nominated and winning  Emmys, I for one love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia a trillion times more. It's definitely the best and funniest comedy TV series that I've ever seen in my entire life, and I've watched a lot of TV in my lifetime, so that's really saying something. I've always felt like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was far more deserving of winning a lot of awards than Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory have ever been. I would definitely say that's especially true when it comes to Modern Family's fourth season. As much as I love Modern Family, I'm actually hoping that it doesn't win another Emmy award for best comedy TV series this year, because I don't think that season four was good enough to deserve winning an Emmy for the season.

One of the countless things that I love about It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is how they've constantly tackled a variety of social and political issues in an extremely absurd and funny way. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is probably the only comedy TV series that's consistently been able to make me laugh hysterically simply by thinking about it. That being said, I think it's a shame that some of what I think are the funniest comedies on TV right now are the ones that don't get the greatest ratings. I would say that's definitely the case when it comes to Parks and Recreation, Happy Endings and to some extent Community. Finally, if you're not already watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I strongly urge you to check it out immediately, especially if you are a fan of the show Seinfeld. A critic once described the show as being "Seinfeld on crack", and if I had to describe It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in just one sentence, that's definitely the perfect way to describe the show. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia truly is the funniest TV show that I've ever seen in my entire life.

New Girl: Damon Wayans Jr. Returning as Coach in Season 3-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, Damon Wayans Jr. is finalizing a deal to return as Coach for a major arc in season 3 of New Girl. Here's an excerpt from the article:

You’ll recall Wayans appeared in the New Girl pilot, but was forced to drop out when Happy Endings scored a surprise Season 2 renewal; Lamorne Morris’s Winston was brought in to fill the void. Endings‘ official (and extremely unfortunate) demise paved the way for Wayans’ likely return. (Fox declined to comment for this story.)

Jake Johnson, who’s currently shooting the comedy Let’s Be Cops with Wayans in Atlanta, kicked up the Coach comeback buzz last month when he told TVLine in the wake of Happy Endings ABC cancellation that he’d be thrilled to “welcome [Wayans'] back to the loft,” adding, “I would be surprised if he doesn’t come back for a while. There would be such funny episodes with the Coach seeing what’s happened in the past two years since he’s [been] gone.”

My thoughts: I have to say that I actually have mixed feelings about Damon Wayans Jr. returning to New Girl in any capacity at this point in time. On the one hand, I'm a huge fan of Damon Wayans Jr., and I especially loved him on Happy Endings. I also really liked the character Coach in the pilot. On the other hand, in retrospect I feel like it was a good move on the producers' part to replace Damon Wayans Jr. with not only a different actor, but also a different character. I say this because Coach was a very whacky character, and Jess, Nick and Schmidt are all very whacky and quirky characters as well. I've always felt like Winston/Lamorne Morris really helps balance out Jess, Nick and Schmidt's personalities, while also having a tendency to be kind of crazy at times, such as when he's trying to play pranks on people.

Hannah Simone/Cece has also helped balance out the other characters as well, but I feel like bringing Damon Wayans Jr. and the character Coach back could potentially be overkill on the show's silliness factor even though New Girl is a comedy and is supposed to silly and funny. Plus, I really felt like the show has really moved on and evolved past the point where bringing Damon Wayans Jr. and the character Coach would feel organic and not feel forced at this point in time. With all that said, I'm willing to keep an open mind regarding Damon Wayans Jr./Coach's return next season. It will definitely be interesting to see what the writers come up with for his return.

New Girl: It’s Cece’s wedding day, but will she get married? (My thoughts on episode 2x25 “Elaine’s Big Day”)

It’s hard to believe that this was the season finale, mainly because I feel like the season really flew by, but I say that in a good way. Now that season two has ended, I can definitely say that I love season two even more than I loved season one, which is something that I’ve been thinking for quite a while now. This episode was the perfect way to end what I think was an absolutely amazing season.

If the previous episode didn’t make me absolutely hate Jess’ dad, Bob, this episode definitely did. Thankfully, he was barely in it. At the beginning of the episode Jess, Nick, Schmidt and Winston were getting ready to go to Cece’s wedding, and Jess wanted her dad to take a picture of them. Bob very quickly tried to kick Nick out of the picture by telling him to move further and further out of the camera frame until he left the apartment. This quickly led to Jess, Nick, Schmidt and Winston fighting with each other before everybody but Jess stormed off. Once everybody else had left, Bob took a picture of Jess, and I have to say that I love the way Zooey Deschanel posed and smiled for the picture. I thought it was cute, and it definitely made me chuckle.

That being said, even if Bob doesn’t really like Nick all that much, I don’t think that gives him the right to be as rude to Nick as he was in both that scene and the previous episode. After all, he’s not just staying in Jess’ apartment, Nick, Schmidt and Winston live there too, so I think he should at least act polite towards each of them since he’s a guest in their home. Besides, it wasn’t just this episode that he acted rude to the guys. I also thought he was being pretty rude to Winston in the previous episode, calling him “Wilson” and making him feel guilty about eating the birthday cake that he had bought for himself. If I were Nick, Winston or Schmidt, I would definitely have told Bob to take a hike if he was going to act as rude as he was being.

This episode once again reinforced my belief that both the writers and Lamorne Morris have really found their grove the character Winston after having him come across as being rather forgettable in season one. If you ask me, this episode was probably Lamorne’s best performance yet on the show. After Schmidt accidentally walked in on Cece getting ready for the wedding when he was trying to find the men’s restroom, he came to the conclusion that Cece wanted to get out of her wedding to Shivrang. He was repeatedly insisting the Cece had told him this with her eyes. This prompted him to team up with Winston to play a series of pranks designed to sabotage Cece’s wedding. Naturally, since it has already been well established that Winston is terrible at playing pranks, this led to a series of disasters.

Happy Endings: An update on the possibility of the USA Network picking up the show from TVLine's Michael Ausiello

Here's some scoop on Happy Endings from this week's (Posted on 5/21/13) Ask Ausiello column.

Question: For the love of a Happy Ending, any word on whether or not USA Network will right a terrible wrong? —Tiera
Ausiello: No news is, in this case, pretty good news. Negotiations continue between Sony and USA, which tells me that the cabler remains seriously interested in giving the show a fourth season. Meanwhile, if the talks collapse — bite your tongue, Ausiello! — it’s an inevitability that Damon Wayans Jr. will find himself back on New Girl next season in some capacity. (You’ll recall Wayans appeared in the New Girl pilot, but was forced to drop out when Happy Endings earned a surprise second season; Lamorne Morris’s Winston was brought in to fill the void.) New Girl: Nick, whatever you do, don’t tell Jess’ dad that you slept with Jess! (My thoughts on episode 2x24 “Winston’s Birthday (Part 1)”)

Given the way the previous episode ended with Jess and Nick sleeping together, I definitely had big expectations for this episode, and both the writers and the cast definitely exceeded my expectations. Elizabeth Meriwether had previously said that the last three episodes of the season would cover the events of one day leading up to Cece’s wedding in the season two finale (New Girl: Jess, Nick and Cece related scoop), and I have to say that I really like that the writers did that so the viewers can see everything that led up to Jess and Nick sleeping together, as well as the immediate aftermath of them sleeping together for the first time. I also think that also helps the other storylines that are going on as well, namely Cece’s upcoming wedding to Shivrang.

After working several different odd jobs and teaching a creative writing class to adults throughout the season, Jess was finally offered a job teaching kids. They apparently wanted her to get to the school right away so she could talk to the principal of the school and sub for a class, which was disaster, mostly because the kids were completely out of control.

That being said, the whole scenario of the principal wanting Jess to come to the school immediately because they wanted to talk to her, and they also needed a sub felt a bit ridiculous to me. They didn’t tell her anything about the class that she would be subbing for, such as what the kids were studying or show her the teacher’s lesson plans, they basically took her to the classroom and left her to fend for herself, which didn’t seem to go very well. Jess tried to tell them that she was supposed to spend the day helping a friend get ready for their wedding, but they basically ignored what she was saying and strong-armed her into subbing for a class. As weird as the whole scenario with Jess being offered the job and the school completely putting her on the spot to start teaching immediately, it was definitely great to see Jess teaching kids again.

On top of being put on the spot by the school’s staff, Jess was also having to deal with the fact that her dad, Bob, came to town rather unexpectedly for Cece’s wedding, while also trying to help Cece deal with the fact that she accidentally got an Indian tattoo that had originally been drawn on her hand for the wedding got smeared on her face and wouldn’t come off after she fell asleep on her hand. To me, both of those storylines essentially felt like they were primarily meant to serve as obstacles that kept Jess and Nick from being able to talk about the fact that they had slept together.

With Jess preoccupied with trying to sub for a class at the school that was offering her a job, while also trying to help Cece deal with her tattoo, Nick was forced to spend the day with Bob. Jess had specifically told Nick not to tell her dad that they had slept together, and Nick initially tried to dodge Bob’s questions about his love life by telling him that he was interested in a girl named Yolanda Winston and he described “Yolanda Winston” as being the exact opposite of Jess, but of course Nick ended up telling Bob that he’s interested in Jess after he mistakenly came to the conclusion that Bob would be happy about this news. 

ABC Renews Shows for the 2013-2014 TV Season: Scandal, Grey’s, Nashville and More!-TVLine

According to TVLine's Michael Ausiello, ABC has renewed Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, Revenge, Castle, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, Modern Family, The Middle, Suburgatory and Last Man Standing for the 2013-2014 TV season. Here's an excerpt from the article, which gives some information on which shows ABC has canceled:

On the cancellation front, Malibu Country, Body of Proof, How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life), Red Widow and Happy Endings have been axed (full story on H.E.‘s demise here).

My thoughts: In terms of all the shows that ABC has renewed for the 2013-2014 TV season, most of these renewals don't come as a surprise to me. Although, I am kind of surprised that Nashville has been renewed despite what a lot of entertainment news reporters had been saying about the show's renewal chances. From where I'm standing, Nashville's ratings haven't been very good for most of the season, so I wasn't expecting it to be renewed. I've never watched Nashville before, but I'm definitely happy for the show's fans that it has been renewed.

Suburgatory's ratings weren't the greatest this year, so I was definitely kind of worried that the show might be canceled. I'll admit that it took a while for Suburgatory to grow on me, but I've really come to love the show, so I'm thrilled that it has been renewed as well. Suburgatory is an incredibly underrated show, if you ask me. Last Man Standing's renewal is a little bit surprising to me, but I do kind of like the show, so I'm glad that it has been renewed. I guess the ABC network executives were happy with Last Man Standing's ratings on Friday nights this past season. In terms of all the other shows that have been renewed, none of these renewals come as a surprise to me. With the exception of Castle, which I only watch occasionally, I watch all of these shows every week and consider them to be some of my favorite TV shows, so I'm really happy that they've all been renewed.

When it comes to the shows that ABC has canceled, the only cancellation that I'm truly upset about is Happy Endings, but I can't say that I didn't see the show's cancellation coming given how bad its ratings were this past season. In case I haven't already made it perfectly clear to anybody who reads my blog on a regular basis, Happy Endings is one of my top favorite comedies, so I really hope that the USA network does end up picking up the show for a fourth season like they've apparently expressed interest in doing. Happy Endings is a truly hilarious and underrated show, so I would hate to see it end now.

New Girl: Oh, my god! I can’t believe that Jess and Nick actually… (My thoughts on episode 2x23 “Virgins”)

Once again the writers have managed to reinforce my belief that New Girl is one show that was fortunate enough to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, which is a very rare thing in my opinion. Personally, I absolutely loved New Girl’s first season, but I’ve actually enjoyed this season even more. A big part of that is due to the direction that the writers have taken the Jess and Nick relationship in this season. Most shows typically drag things out forever before anything even remotely significant happens between two characters that the viewers know will ultimately get together and become a couple, and one couple that constantly comes to mind when I think about how the writing for Jess and Nick’s relationship is different from most shows would be Ross and Rachel from Friends, and honestly the writing for Ross and Rachel’s relationship often annoyed me at times. That’s also why I applaud Elizabeth Meriwether for being fearless enough to deviate from the typical format of will they or won’t they couples on TV shows.

The writers definitely had Jess and Nick take a major leap forward in their relationship, but I’ll talk more about that later since I’m getting ahead of myself. The episode began with Nick, Winston and Schmidt walking in on Jess shaving Cece’s armpits, but she soon got a text message from a guy named Teddy, who Jess quickly revealed was the guy that she lost her virginity to. Anyway, Teddy was back in town and apparently wanted to get together with her for a drink, which prompted Nick to quickly become fixated on wanting to know about Teddy. The whole thing with Nick fixating on Teddy throughout the episode was very funny in my opinion. Jess telling Nick, Winston and Schmidt that she lost her virginity to Teddy quickly led to them each telling the story of how they lost their virginity, and they made it a contest to see who had the worst story.

Jess started off her story by telling them about her prom night. She went to the prom with a guy that she had started a gender equality society with, which led to some very awkward moments between her and her date. Jess ended up storming off, only to run into Teddy in the hallway and they ended up singing together as Teddy played the guitar, which is apparently how they met. However, they didn’t sleep to together that night, which quickly prompted the guys to ask Cece to tell the story of how she lost her virginity.

Cece’s story was pretty short, but it was pretty funny. Cece apparently lost her virginity to Mick Jagger, which is just…bizarre in my opinion. The flashback started with Cece telling a bartender that she just wanted to lose her virginity in a very spontaneous way and not plan it out. A moment later Mick Jagger came up to Cece and told her that he wanted to sleep with her. Mick Jagger didn’t actually appear in this episode, and according to Elizabeth Meriwether, they never approached him about actually appearing in the episode, and honestly I think it was fine that they used a body double to be Mick Jagger since the flashback was so quick. My favorite thing about Cece’s story was the way Hannah Simone was very matter of fact in her delivery when Cece told the others that it wasn’t an embarrassing story for her, she simply likes telling people that story.

Happy Endings: May Jump to USA Network If Canceled by ABC

According to TVLine's Kimberly Roots, the USA Network has expressed interest in picking up Happy Endings for a fourth season in the event that ABC cancels it. Here's an excerpt from the article:

Sony TV, which produces Endings, has approached a few networks about continuing the crew’s shenanigans; our sister site Deadline reports that USA Network has expressed interest.

The news is a welcome surprise for fans of the quirky ensemble series, which was exiled to Fridays — often a harbinger of cancellation — last month. Its first Friday broadcast drew 3 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating with the 18-49 demo (and its second that evening fared worse), falling below its average Tuesday-night numbers.

My thoughts: I for one really hope that this works out and the USA Network does pick Happy Endings up for a fourth season, because at this point I'll be beyond shocked if ABC renews the show given how low the ratings have been this season. I would absolutely hate to see Happy Endings get canceled. If you ask me, Happy Endings is one of the funniest and most underrated comedies on TV right now right along with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, New Girl, Cougar Town and Rules of Engagement. I still love Modern Family, but season four has been extremely lackluster so far.

When I see the ratings that Modern Family still manages to get even in its fourth season, it really makes me think that Happy Endings, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, New Girl, Cougar Town and Rules of Engagement are all far more deserving of Modern Family's high ratings. That being said, I really do hope that this works out, but I'm going to try my best to not get excited about this news until it's official since anything can happen in the entertainment industry and this could very easily not work out in the end. If this does happen, I will love the USA Network even more than I already do since White Collar and Suits are two of my favorite TV shows.

"Happy Endings": Love has been a fleeting thing for Max (Adam Pally) this season. Don't expect that to change any time soon. We will tell you part of the storyline for their baby episode, and then you can let your imagination run wild. Dave and Penny's parents are thinking about adopting a baby, and the two do not take the news well. So they hatch a plan that ends with them kidnapping a baby. Yep, told you it was complicated.
