Scandal: Season 2 Spoilers–Tony Goldwyn on Fitz/Olivia Breakup and More-TVLine

Here's an interview that Tony Goldwyn did with TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich. In the interview, Tony talks about the scene where Fitz kills Verna and Olivia and Fitz's breakup. He also gives some scoop on tonight's episode (Episode 2x14 "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot") and how he will be directing an episode of Scandal later this season. Here's an excerpt from the article where talks about Fitz killing Verna:

TVLINE | We’re coming off quite an episode. What do you think raced through Fitz’s head when Verna revealed to him the truth about the election rigging?
It was, I think, a three-part reaction. Maybe four parts. First, it was complete shock at what she was saying to him, because at first he thought she was in her delirium. When he does realize what she’s saying, the realization that Olivia was involved is absolutely crushing for him because, you know… he “gets” Mellie. And he’s not terribly shocked that Cyrus is an opportunist, even though he’s deeply hurt and disappointed. But Olivia is someone who Fitz had put on a pedestal — the highest pedestal, really. She is someone he came to rely on as a reflection of the best part of himself or the man that he aspired to be, which was the antithesis of his father. So her having betrayed him in that way invalidates everything for him and confirms his worst fears, in a sense, about himself. If she is corrupt, then everything loses all meaning. And that’s absolutely devastating.

TVLINE | And the way Verna drove the dagger in a bit further, with the comment about his father….
When Verna says, “I owed it to your father” to tell you the truth… That’s a moment where he, for me, was first saying, “[My father] wins. He was right about me,” and I think the bottom falls out of his life. And when I walk to the [hospital room] door, in that moment I think he has the opposite reaction. He sort of feels, “I’m not going to let [my father] win. He’s not going to beat me. I made a commitment to be something, to do this job right. And this was not my decision to steal [the election].” I think he believes he could have won it, maybe, and he’s not going to let Verna, this sort of surrogate for his father, take him down — so he makes this insane decision to kill her.

TVLINE | Actors, of course, can be very protective of their characters. What was your reaction when you heard for the first time that Fitz would end Verna’s life?
We got this script very late; I don’t think any of us got it before the table read. So when we sat down to read it out loud together and I got to the scene that precedes that — at Verna’s funeral, when Olivia comes up to me and says, “I will wait for you Fitz. I’ll wait as long as you need,” and I turn to her and say, “Oh yeah, about that; I changed my mind” — I was completely shocked. I literally couldn’t speak the words. I couldn’t figure out where that came from because [it preceded the flashback to Verna's reveal]. As far as I knew, the last time I spoke to Liv, I said, “Wait for me,” and suddenly coming out of my mouth are these words that are the antithesis of what I’ve felt. I somehow forced the words out and [series creator] Shonda [Rhimes] looked at me and mouthed, “It’s going to be OK, don’t worry.” And then the scene came up, the scene with Verna that followed, and I realized, “Oh my God, I’m going to kill her.” I was shocked by that, but I was less shocked than I was by my reversal with Liv. I couldn’t process that. I had, like, a literal and physical reaction.

My thoughts: Personally, I still can't believe that Fitz killed Verna. It will be very interesting to see how the writers handle that aspect of Fitz's storyline moving forward. To me, there's pretty much no coming back from doing something like that on a TV show. If anybody finds out that Fitz killed Verna, I'm not sure how or if the writers would be able to have Tony Goldwyn remain a part of the show. It was a pretty bold move on the writers' part to have Fitz kill Verna, if you ask me.

I'm definitely upset that Fitz has decided to stay married to Mellie rather than get back together with Olivia. It's pretty clear that Fitz doesn't truly love Mellie. If he does, then he definitely doesn't love her as much as he loves Olivia, so I don't understand why he would ever want to stay married to Mellie and be happy about it. I'll admit that I couldn't stand Mellie at first, but she has definitely grown on me. Although, since this is a TV show, the writers have to drag things out for a while before they can have Fitz and Olivia become a couple, so I can kind of understand why they are having Fitz stay married to Mellie for the time being.

As for Tony Goldwyn directing an episode of Scandal, I'm absolutely thrilled about that. I for one think that he's an amazing director. Tony directed one of my all-time favorite episodes of The L Word (The season 1 finale). He also directed several other episodes of The L Word, but my favorite of the episodes that he directed is definitely the season 1 finale. Tony has directed a lot of other shows that I really like, such as Grey's Anatomy, Justified and Damages, but his work as a director for The L Word stands out to me the most.

Damages: Series Finale—Burning Questions Answered-TVLine

Here's an interview that TVLine's Michael Ausiello did with executive producers of Damages, Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman, about the series finale. In the interview, Kessler and Zelman talk about whether or not Patty was one who put the hit out on Ellen, the courtroom showdown between Patty and Ellen, the epilogue of the series finale, the final moments of the episode and more. Here's an excerpt from the article:

TVLINE | In the epilogue, why didn’t you specify how many years you were flashing forward?
KESSLER | For a long time we did have a specific number attached to it, but then [we determined that] that the number of years that have passed is not the point. When one talks of a fairytale or tells a joke, the details have the potential to get in the way of the meaning…. Also, there’s a number that’s inherent in it because obviously Ellen’s child has been born. You’re given a framework that it was probably around five years based on the age of the child.
ZELMAN | There were several factual, expositional details that we left out. We wanted the epilogue to feel much more emotional and psychological, and not feel like we were wrapping things up by giving the audience a lot of facts. There are two other areas where we did that. One has to do with Ellen and her relationship with Chris. In our mind, Ellen is together with Chris. And there is one line in there that references it, but it’s subtle. The other example is that we never referenced specifically whether Patty is on the Supreme Court or not. But again, there was a subtle thing that we did with the fantasy Patty had where Ellen comes to that window. Prior to that, Patty asks her driver to take her home. And then after the fantasy she says, “I’ve changed my mind; take me to the office.” The main thing that meant for us is that all Patty has left is her work. And whether she is on the Supreme Court or not, it doesn’t really matter.

My thoughts: I don't have DirecTV, so I won't be able to watch the final season of Damages until it's released on DVD. That being said, I'm really sad that Damages has come to an end. I've always thought that it was one of the best shows on TV, and I hate that it never really got very good ratings when it aired on the FX Network. I don't know what its ratings were like when Damages aired exclusively on DirecTV, but I'm very grateful to DirecTV for picking Damages up after the FX Network executives decided to cancel it. Damages is a very well written show with great acting from all of the actors that appeared on the show over the years. If anyone who's reading this post has never seen Damages before, I highly recommend buying the DVDs and watching the show.

Here's an interview that TVLine's Michael Ausiello did with Rose Byrne, which gives some scoop on the fifth and final season of Damages. In the interview, discusses her thoughts on fans speculating about Ellen's fate based on the season 5 promo, the evolution of Ellen and Patty's relationship throughout the course of the series, her relationship with Glenn Close and the possibility of her doing another long-term gig on a TV show. TVLINE | Are you getting approached by fans worried about Ellen’s fate? The promos paint an ominous picture.
Yes, a lot of concerned viewers are coming up to me shaking their heads. They’re very worried. It’s a very provocative image.

TVLINE | Of course, this being Damages, nothing is ever as it seems. Is it possible she’s really not dead?
I’m pleading the fifth on this. [Laughs] I’m not going to give you anything.

TVLINE | As a fan of the show, the prospect of Ellen getting killed makes me angry. I know you can’t really speak to that specifically, but can you say whether Season 5 is a satisfying conclusion to the series?
It is. We really go into Ellen’s psychology in terms of her family and in terms of the dynamics of her family and how much that has shaped her and affected her. There’s a lot of stuff with her mother [played by Debra Monk]. We rediscover a lot of things that are going on there. And, obviously, there’s the Ellen-Patty relationship… It’s really haunting stuff. Ellen is very haunted this season — more than ever. We also get to see her grapple with power and the idea of gaining her power and being unapologetic about it. And also, how far is she going to go to win against Patty, who has basically ruined her life? That’s a huge thing this season.

TVLINE | The first two episodes suggest that Ellen is going to be severely outmatched by Patty in the courtroom. Fair to say the playing field levels out a bit as the season progresses?
Yes, it does. I think it’s a very satisfying thing for the fans to see. Early on we always talked about, “Wouldn’t it be great down the line to see them go up against each other over a case?” It’s like the ultimate ending. It all comes full circle. The protégé becomes the opponent.

TVLINE | This season really seems to return to the core of their conflict — which is that Patty tried to have Ellen killed.
Yes. It always comes back to that. It’s a huge thing haunting and hanging over Ellen.

TVLINE | Any twists this season really make your jaw drop?
Oh yes. There are some big things, absolutely. There were a few frantic phone calls to the writers, “What’s happening?! Really?! This is really happening?!” [Laughs]

My thoughts: I know that I've said this before, but while I'm beyond grateful to DirecTV for acquiring Damages when the FX network decided to cancel it, I hate that I had to wait for season 4 to come out on DVD in order to see it. Given the way the season 5 promo looks and the spoilers that I've read, I hate the fact that I'll have to wait until the season 5 DVD set comes out in order to watch the final season even more than I hated waiting for the season 4 DVD set to come out. I loved Jenna Elfman on Dharma & Greg, so I'm really excited to see her in a dramatic role in the final season of  Damages. Personally, I think that Damages is one of the best shows on TV right now, so if you haven't watched it before, I highly recommend that you buy the DVDs. They are definitely worth every penny.

Revenge: Stars Tease Season Two and Reveal Who They Want to Play Emily's Mother!-E! Online

Here's an article by E! Online's Lisa Abdolian, which gives some scoop on season 2 of Revenge. In the article, Madeleine Stowe basically comfirms that Victoria didn't die in the airplane explosion at the end of the season 1 finale. (Not that I believed for one second that Mike Kelley would action kill Victoria off the show.) Stowe also gives some scoop on Victoria's relationship with Emily's mother, and several stars from the show share their thoughts on who should play Emily's mother. Here's an excerpt from the article where Stowe talks about the dynamic of Victoria's relationship with Emily's mother and the cast talk about who they think should be cast as Emily's mother:



Fret not, Revenge fans: We all know it would take more than a little bomb to kill Victoria Grayson, queen of the Hamptons!

 "She's not dead," Bowman tells us exclusively. "You can't kill off Victoria!"

So yes, you can all put down the red Sharpies as there's no need to exact revenge on creator Mike Kelley just yet. But what will the next season bring? Stowe let slip a juicy season-two tease while chatting with us about Emily's mother, who was revealed to be alive in the season finale.

"My understanding is we're antagonistic toward each other," she says, before quickly adding that this will happen if Victoria returns, of course. Her top choice for the part? Marcia Gay Harden!

 "I would love a wonderful, strong actress who is a contemporary to play with. I'd love Marcia Gay Harden, but I don't know if she's been discussed for this," Madeleine tells us. "She would be fantastic. There are great actors on the show, but it would be fun to work with someone who is my contemporary."

 

And just like his onscreen mother, Bowman would also like to see Harden take on the role, telling us, "Marcia Gay Harden would be great. It's got to be someone who's got a little bit of a screw loose and can do that well. Marcia's done that a few times; she's good at it."

As for Daniel, Bowman speculates that Daniel is going to get as dark as ABC will allow, a turn possibly fueled, in part, by his guilt about the intense conversation he had with his mother before she boarded the plane.

"I mean if your mother died, I'm sure you'd be plagued with guilt," he reasons. "Within the ABC parameter, [Daniel] can't get too dark, but I'm sure that he's going to have this kind of M.O. throughout in terms of this sort of darker side to him."

My thoughts: I have to say that I couldn't love the idea of Marcia Gay Harden playing Emily's mother more than I already do if I tried. The first thing I ever saw Marcia Gay Harden in was the movie The First Wives Club, and she was hilarious in that movie. I recently watched season 2 of Damages for the first time on DVD, and Marcia was brilliant on Damages. If you've never seen Damages already, I highly recommend that you buy the DVDs of the first three seasons and season 4, which will be released on DVD next Tuesday. The DVDs of Damages are worth every penny, if you ask me. While I'm beyond grateful to DirectTV for purchasing Damages from FX when they decided to cancel it, I hate that I have to wait until the DVDs come out to watch the show now since I don't have DirectTV. Damages is definitely one of the most brilliant shows on TV right now, if you ask me, but I digress. If Marcia Gay Harden isn't cast as Emily's mother, then my next choice would be Elizabeth Mitchell. I think she would be great on Revenge.

Ausiello: I’ve seen the first two episodes of the fifth and final season (bowing July 11) and there’s no sign of Tate Donovan’s dead attorney. Here’s what you will see in Hours 1 and 2: At least one gratuitous shot of guest star Ryan Phillippe’s abs, a ginormous twist via flash forward that I imagine will infuriate/upset/unsettle a large chunk of the audience, and Patty opening up an F-word-laced can of whoop ass on her kindergarten-aged granddaughter.

Damages | The fifth and final season of the acclaimed drama premieres July 11 on DirecTV, and Jenna Elfman (best known for her sitcom turns, including the new NBC comedy 1600 Penn) plays a pivotal — and not very funny – role. “Yeah, I get murdered!” she told me, hoping that she wasn’t letting slip with too big a spoiler. Here's some scoop on Damages from Kristin Dos Santos' new Spoiler Chat Daily for Thursday March 3/1/12.

We haven't forgotten! In fact, we hit the set today in NYC to chat up newcomer Ryan Philippe, who tells us his character is a "Julian Assange type," which is what lured him to the role. (Ryan hasn't been on TV since he was 17 and did One Life to Live for six months!) His character is a whistleblower, who is at odds with Patty, and the season looks riveting. It's gonna air on DirecTV, premiering sometime this summer.

Damages Casts Jenna Elfman in Season 5 Arc-TVLine

Sitcom vet Jenna Elfman is taking a rare dramatic detour with a recurring role on the fifth and final season of Damages.

The Dharma & Greg alum will play an investment bank employee troubled by her company’s conduct. When she approaches Channing McClaren (previously announced special guest star Ryan Phillippe), the iconoclastic founder of a WikiLeaks-type Website devoted to corporate and government transparency, it lays the foundation for the case that will pit Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) and Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) against each other.

Additionally, TVLine has learned that The Big C‘s Alexandra Socha has been cast as the daughter to Elfman’s character. And as first scooped by The Hollywood Reporter, Startacus villain John Hannah will appear in multiple episodes as an advisor to Phillippe’s Channing.

Damages‘ final season is slated to air next summer on DirecTV.
